Gilroy, CA Mexican Family History Interview Irma Ruiz Batrez 5/5 3/17/2017
Irma Batrez is a community leader and environmental activist in Gilroy, California. She was very helpful in helping El Excentrico Magazine Project and La Raza Historical Society recover Mexican Family history stories. Below is the story of Las Gardenias De Gilroy as told by Irma Batrez to Ramon J. Martinez.
Mr. Daniel and Beatrice Talamantez Ruiz brought their family from Texas to Gilroy in 1943. Two of their sons had been sent to the west coast by the US Army; Enrique to training at Fort Ord and Daniel to Fort Lewis, Washington. The parents wanted to stay close to their sons so they and their (4 daughters and five sons) came to Gilroy where they opened ”Dan’s Post Office Market” which was named because it was across the street from the post office at 55 Sixth Street..
If one were to go from Gilroy City Hall to the post office, the shortest route was through back and front doors of the store, so Mr. and Mrs. Ruiz quickly came to know all the politicians and elected officials in town. Irma remembers going around town and passing out election campaign materials for the various candidates that her parents were supporting for elected office.
Because it was wartime, there were soldiers and strangers everywhere around town and the Mexican mothers were concerned that the girls needed guidance and activities to keep them entertained and supervised. The mothers helped found Las Gardenias de Gilroy Club. They met in member’s homes and backyards.
Irma remembers that the women and girls made enchiladas and held car washes to raise money for the girls to have birthday parties and to take trips to the beaches on the coast. The Gardenias also raised $5000 by bringing popular Tejano Bandleader Beto Villa to Wheeler Auditorium in Gilroy. The money they raised was also used to host tardiadas, showers for engaged girls or to give gifts to those who were getting married.
The Gardenias also took part in the annual Fiestas Patrias ( 16th. of September Mexican Independence Day) and Cinco de Mayo parades and fiestas in San Jose. These activities involved planning decorated cars and floats, Mexican foklorico dancing groups and other activities to support the events. It was the perfect reason for the girls to go to meeting and planning events in the big city. Irma's parents would let the girls go to meetings, Irma was exposed to all this planning and organizing as the youngest of the clan. She had three older sisters and five brothers to lead the way.
After the war, Irma's brothers and relatives opened businesses in San Jose such as The Balcony Lounge, and Joe's Place. Her older sister, Mary married and opened a restaurant, bar and card room. Mary operated the restaurant for forty-eight years and the buildings are still in the family.
Irma also said that her parents bought and ran a small hotel in Gilroy. The Guadalupe Apartments, which was the Fowler House, one of the oldest houses in Gilroy. The building was originally located on Monterey Street , then moved to 76 South Eigleberry. Irma herself has worked and continuously improved her own professional career. Her education included attending Gavilan College, UC Santa Cruz, National Hispanic University and University of Phoenix. She worked in entry level positions at McCormick & Company and rose to become a trainer/facilitator in Process Improvement in Manufacturing.
