Ginzan Onsen (銀山温泉) is an onsen (hot spring) area in Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Its name means silver mine hot spring. Ginzan Onsen's economy took off thanks to its booming silver production and eventually transitioned over to tourism when it opened up dozens of hot spring resorts along the central river that runs through the town. The mountains that surround this town yield rich hot spring water that is used both in the private hotels and public baths in the city center.

Ginzan onsen became nationally famous as it was featured in the popular television drama Oshin. Each year this onsen village sees hundreds of thousands of domestic Japanese visitors.

Internationally, this town saw a sharp rise in foreign tourism thanks to the famous snow covered sights in the winter. It has since been featured on international travel sites and agencies across the world. CNN has even suggested that this onsen town may be Japan's most charming winter village.

Fossils from the Miocene era have been found in the vicinity.

Here are some recommended hot springs for those who are busy with hardly have time to relax days. Ginzan Onsen is located in Yamagata Prefecture. One of the attractions of Ginzan Onsen is the retro feeling of the whole city that can never be felt in the urban bath and spa.
Obanazawa City is located in the northeastern part of Yamagata Prefecture. There is “Ginzan Onsen” in the mountains where you drive a car about 15km west of the city center. A small hot spring town where Western-style wooden multi-layered inns built from the end of the Taisho era to the early Showa era lined up along the banks of the Ginzan River. Not only the building but also the street gas lights and stone pavement, the entire hot spring town is full of “Taisho Roman” and makes you feel nostalgic.

山形県尾花沢市の銀山温泉は、大正ロマン漂うノスタルジックな風景と美しい夜景が、温泉街のシンボルともなっています。銀山温泉は、温泉街の中心を流れる銀山川を挟むように、大正から昭和初期にかけて建築した旅館が立ち並び、過去の世界にタイムスリップでもしたかのような錯覚も感じられます。
ＮＨＫの連続テレビ小説「おしん」の舞台となったことで一躍脚光を浴び、国内だけではなく海外からも宿泊客が訪れるほどの人気の温泉宿となりました。
ここには日帰り入浴施設もある事から、日帰りで訪れる観光名所としても有名です。
かつては、ジブリ映画「千と千尋の神隠し」の舞台とも言われましたが、「宮城の鎌崎温泉」「群馬の四万温泉」「長野の渋温泉」「鳥取の羽合温泉」を含め、スタジオジブリが「宮崎駿監督が訪れたことがあるのか否かについては、残念ながらわかりませんが、監督が特定のモデルはないという以上、正解ではないようです。」と公表したそうです。

Beautiful night view of Ginzan Onsen in Obanazawa City, Yamagata Prefecture Tohoku Japan, the nostalgic landscape of the Taisho Period has become a symbol of the spa town. At Ginzan Onsen, rows of ryokans built from the Taisho era to the early Showa era are arranged along the Ginzan River flowing through the center of the hot spring town. You can also feel the illusion as if you did a time slip in the past world. It became a popular spa inn for guests to visit from not only domestic but also from overseas because it became the stage of NHK's continuous TV novel Oshin. It is also famous as a sightseeing spot to visit on a day trip, as there are day-trip bathing facilities here.
In the past, it was said to be the stage of the Ghibli movie Spirited Away. However, Mr. Hayao Miyazaki said that there was no specific model place including Miyagi Kamasaki Onsen, Gunma's Shima Onsen, Nagano's Shibu Onsen and Tottori's Hawai Onsen.

Located in the heart of Yamagata prefecture mountains, Ginzan Onsen or in English the Silver Mountain Hot Spring, is a secluded little hot spring town with a rich history in silver mining!
Indeed, before becoming one of Japan most picturesque Hot Spring town, Ginzan Onsen was famous for its past silver mining operation. It all started in 1456 when the first silver was found and little by little the “silver fever” made the fortune of some of very lucky people. It is only in 1741 however that the hot springs of Ginzan was discovered and, roughly just in time when the silver mines starting to close down. During warmer seasons it is possible to visit part of the old silver mine as well as having a wonderful walk in the small forest behind the village.
Now famous for its Onsen, public or not, its ashiyu or foot bath and its many gorgeous Ryokans, Ginzan is definitely the best place to relax if you can afford one of these luxury Ryokans. Indeed visiting Ginzan Onsen can be done in terms of minutes if you have no interest in nature and quickly become boring in winter during the day. Our recommendation would be to stay at least a night there in Winter to enjoy the beauty of the area at night, or during the warmer season with a good hike in the surrounding area.

Situé en plein coeur des montagnes de la préfecture de Yamagata, Ginzan Onsen, ou le bain de source thermale de la montagne d’argent, est une belle petite ville dont l’histoire de ses mines d’argent est bien riche ! En effet, avant de devenir un des endroits les plus pittoresques du Japon grâce à ses thermes, Ginzan Onsen était célèbre pour son extraction d’argent. Tout a commencé en 1456 quand le premier gravat d’argent fut trouvé, et a peu à peu laisse place à la “fièvre de l’argent” qui a fait la fortune de quelques chanceux. Ce n’est cependant qu’en 1741 que les sources d’eau thermales de Ginzan furent découvertes, juste au moment ou les mines d’argent commençaient à devenir moins rentables et fermaient les unes après les autres. Pendant les saisons un peu plus chaudes, il est possible de visiter une partie de la vieille mine d’argent ou de profiter d’une belle promenade dans la forêt derrière le village.
Désormais célèbre pour ses Onsen, publics ou non, son ashiyu (bain pour les pieds), et ses nombreux ryokans, Ginzan est vraiment le meilleur endroit pour vous détendre si vous pouvez vous offrir un de ces ryokans. En effet, la visite de Ginzan Onsen peut être faite en plusieurs minutes si vous n’avez aucun intérêt dans la nature et peut rapidement vous sembler ennuyeuse pendant les jours d’hiver. Nous vous recommandons d’y rester au moins une nuit en hiver afin de profiter de la beauté nocturne de ce lieu, ou de vous offrir une belle escapade dans les environs pendant les saisons plus chaudes.

Ginzan Onsen has left the streets that bring back memories of old days. There is an atmosphere of Japanese romantic vintage in the early 20th century. Ginzan Onsen is located at Obanazawa City, Yamagata Prefecture in Tohoku region. It is named after ‘’Nobesawa Ginzan’’ that flourished as a large silver mine.
