Seeking refuge from mainland invaders, Venetians first settled on these lagoon islands in 421 AD eventually becoming the richest city in the world and a dominant naval power. Today, while the main island of Venice remains the centerpiece, the outer islands have retained their individual identities and remain fascinating stops on any visit to Venice. Venice Food Tour: Rialto Markets & Cicchetti Tasting with Wine | Walks of Italy
The best way to get acquainted with Venice is through its food. On our Venice Food Tour we spend time with an expert local guide exploring the historic Rialto Fish Market, indulging our senses at one of the world's oldest spice stores, meeting local food vendors, making very important pit stops at numerous cafes and restaurants. And, since this is Italy, we eat and drink our weight in local delicacies, like Venice's answer to tapas, 'cicchetti', along the way.

OG Venice Presents: Eating in a Venetian Bacaro with SALVMERIA, Bacaro Contemporaneo
The everyday foods found in Venetian bacari - fresh and even raw seafood, Italian cured meats, regional cheeses and local vegetables - are considered luxury foods in much of world. Yet, here in Venice you can eat a plate of these foods for less money than it costs to eat in a fast-food or chain restaurant, and enjoy your meal in a more relaxed environment while you're at it.
Of course, the existence of Bacari in Venice is no secret and Venetian Cicchetti are universally well-renowned snacks. Yet, many visitors to Venice, even regular visitors, can be hesitant to enter into and order food in bacari, not because they don't want the food, but really just because they're not sure which food is which and how to order it without disrupting the lively stream of life in the Bacaro.
With that in mind, and especially our own friends who have told us: We saw the cicchetti, but weren't quite sure how it worked, we decided to open a series of video posts with an introduction to eating in a Venetian bacaro.
What is a Bacaro?
A Bacaro is a traditional Venetian snack bar where both local Venetians and tourists mingle over spritz, wine, snacks and cicchetti. Visiting a bacaro, whether at lunch time or at cocktail hour can be one of the most fun, the most convenient, and also the least expensive ways to taste some of the best food available in Venice.
Who goes to the Bacaro?
Venetians from all walks of life and, as Giorgio, the owner of SALVMERIA, says it, also tourists who appreciate the Venetian style ... those who want to know the Venetian style of how to drink, how to eat and how to live.
Why do Venetians Often Choose to Eat in a Bacaro?
Because in a bacaro we have the best food at the best price and the atmosphere and the company are very friendly.
Thank you SALVMERIA: Bacaro Contemporaneo for your warm welcome and for speaking with us!

Venice, Italy - Squero di San Trovaso: The Gondola Boatyard HD (2015)
Venice is a city in northeastern Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture, and its artworks. The city in its entirety is listed as a World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon.
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region. In 2009, there were 270,098 people residing in Venice's comune (the population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; around 60,000 in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the Mainland), mostly in the large frazioni (roughly equivalent to parishes or wards in other countries) of Mestre and Marghera; 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon). Together with Padua and Treviso, the city is included in the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area (PATREVE), with a total population of 2,600,000. PATREVE is only a statistical metropolitan area without any degree of autonomy.
The name is derived from the ancient Veneti people who inhabited the region by the 10th century BC. The city historically was the capital of the Republic of Venice. Venice has been known as the La Dominante, Serenissima, Queen of the Adriatic, City of Water, City of Masks, City of Bridges, The Floating City, and City of Canals. Luigi Barzini described it in The New York Times as undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man. Venice has also been described by the Times Online as being one of Europe's most romantic cities.
The Republic of Venice was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades and the Battle of Lepanto, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain, and spice) and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century. This made Venice a wealthy city throughout most of its history. It is also known for its several important artistic movements, especially the Renaissance period. Venice has played an important role in the history of symphonic and operatic music, and it is the birthplace of Antonio Vivaldi.

Places to see in ( Venice - Italy ) Laguna di Venezia
The Venetian Lagoon (Laguna di Venezia - Łaguna de Venesia) is an enclosed bay of the Adriatic Sea, in northern Italy, in which the city of Venice is situated. Its name in the Italian and Venetian languages, Laguna Veneta—cognate of Latin lacus, lake—has provided the international name for an enclosed, shallow embayment of salt water, a lagoon.
The Venetian Lagoon stretches from the River Sile in the north to the Brenta in the south, with a surface area of around 550 square kilometres (212 square miles). It is around 8% land, including Venice itself and many smaller islands. About 11% is permanently covered by open water, or canal, as the network of dredged channels are called, while around 80% consists of mud flats, tidal shallows and salt marshes. The lagoon is the largest wetland in the Mediterranean Basin.
It is connected to the Adriatic Sea by three inlets: Lido, Malamocco and Chioggia. Sited at the end of a largely enclosed sea, the lagoon is subject to high variations in water level, the most extreme being the spring tides known as the acqua alta (Italian for high water), which regularly flood much of Venice. The nearby Marano-Grado Lagoon, with a surface area of around 160 square kilometres (62 square miles), is the northernmost lagoon in the Adriatic Sea and is called sometimes the twin sister of the Venice lagoon.
The Lagoon of Venice is the most important survivor of a system of estuarine lagoons that in Roman times extended from Ravenna north to Trieste. In the sixth century, the Lagoon gave security to Romanised people fleeing invaders (mostly the Huns). Later, it provided naturally protected conditions for the growth of the Venetian Republic and its maritime empire. It still provides a base for a seaport, the Venetian Arsenal, and for fishing, as well as a limited amount of hunting and the newer industry of fish farming.
The Lagoon was formed about six to seven thousand years ago, when the marine transgression following the Ice Age flooded the upper Adriatic coastal plain.[a] Deposition of river sediments compensated for the sinking coastal plain, and coastwise drift from the mouth of the Po tended to close tidal inlets with sand bars.

Italy, Venice - San Salvador church
Photographer:Samuel Magal (samuel@sites-and-photos.com)
The church is located on the Campo San Salvador, along the Merceria, the main shopping street of Venice. The church was first consecrated in 1177 by Pope Alexander III shortly after his reconciliation with Emperor Frederick Barbarossa at nearby San Marco. The present church, however, was begun in around 1508 by Giorgio Spavento and continued after his death the following year by Tullio Lombardo, Vincenzo Scamozzi and possibly Jacopo Sansovino.

Irresistible to tourists, has Venice become unwelcoming to its inhabitants?
Venice has long been a city of trade and travelers, but Venetians now feel tourism is squeezing them out. The city is currently losing about 1,000 residents every year as the cost of housing rises and mass tourism poses a threat to food, culture and the Venetian way of life. Special correspondent Christopher Livesay reports on what's behind the depopulation.

Arsenale Venice
In 1473, the Senate in Venice ordered the building of the Arsenale Nuovissino, in order to have a safe shed to store weapons and boats that would always be available in case of war.

Venice is considered the city of art, romance and prestige. The extraordinary architecture was built on an archipelago of small islands separated by a network of canals crossed by approximately 400 bridges, once wooden and then replaced by stone.
The Grand Canal is the main city artery. It is crossed by three bridges and has the shape of an upside down S dividing the city in two parts and in their turn divided into six sestieri (districts): Cannaregio, San Marco and Castello on the left side; Santa Croce, San Polo and Dorsoduro on the right side of the canal. Water transport undoubtedly prevails over land travel, with gondolas, ships, ferries, and yachts serving as taxis to transport people and goods. There are few main roads and several small calli (narrow streets) developed along canals, campi (squares adjacent to churches), bell towers and fondamenta (streets along the canals) where motor vehicles are not allowed. Refugees from Spina Adria and Aquileia after the invasion of the Huns in the 5th century AD founded Venice.
The Doge under the protection of the Byzantine Empire governed it by maritime tribunes and later. In the 9th century the city became a very important commercial port, connecting the eastern and western markets through the Adriatic Sea. Its commercial power soon resulted in military power. Within a few years, Venice dominated all the east Adriatic coast, reaching the East, colonising the territories and conquering important markets, competing with Genoa and with the other Maritime Republics to assert its power.
The Turks chased the Venetians from many eastern colonies. The repercussions of the French Revolution affected this perfect aristocratic government where commerce and military power supported each other. In 1797 Venice was weak and after the Campoformio treaty, it was subject to Austria and subsequently annexed by Italy. The Grand Canal, offers a quick view of the most beautiful palaces in Venice: the Academia, the Cà d'Oro, the Casino, the palace of the Biennial, the University, the Chiesa della Salute and the popular Rialto bridge, up to Piazza San Marco where the canal opens into a wide area.
The square is the heart of Venice and its symbol. It is an architectural jewel and one of the most beautiful squares in Italy; a miracle built in trachyte and Istrian stone. In the past, religious and civil ceremonies took place in this square and also the famous Carnival. At its end there is the Basilica and the Clock Tower. The coffee bars and restaurants surrounding it are pleasant meeting places. Glass blowing is particularly interesting and takes place in the Island of Murano with several workshops expert in blown glass and artistic crystal manufacture. The manufacture of the so-called murrine is particularly difficult and beautiful.
These are art decorations where coloured glass is blown and cut inside glass globes with expertise and extraordinary precision. The manufacture of lace is also extraordinary. Several workshops continue to manufacture Venetian mirrors, made with ancient techniques, with silver plates on glass, enriched by glass frames with elegant shapes.
