Gir National Park - Sasan Gir | Indian Simba - Asian Lion Spotted - Gir Safari | Savvy Fernweh
This video is from Gir National Park & Sanctuary, in Sasan Gir, Gujarat, India. As we know Disney has released a live action remake of Lion King. To keep the momentum up we decided to say Hello to Indian SIMBA ! !
The Lions are found at present only in 2 area of the world. In Africa (Central and Southern) and in India.
Yes, in India. And probably the highest population of lion is found in India only and they are found in Gir forest in Gujarat. We were very excited about this trip. Check out all our experiences as we go for safari in open jeep with our driver and guide through the main Gir jungle. Earlier that day in morning, we also visited Devaliya Safari park which is an eco-tourism zone and private park nearby to Gir. Its main purpose was to reduce the tourist load from Gir Forest. We did bus safari in here in INR 150 per person.
PS: We didn't carry the DSLR with us ! But we tried to take the best shots of our royal animals !

Gir National Park- Safari Booking & Travel Guide Into the Wild Part 2
Gir is one of India’s oldest sanctuaries, and is synonymous with the majestic Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica). The only place in India to see this animal, this park can take legitimate pride in saving an endangered species, which was at the threshold of extinction in the start of the twenty-first century, by providing it a more secured habitat. The Gir ecosystem falls in Biogeography Zone-4 (the semi arid) and Biogeography Province 4-B. Gujarat Rajwara is the last remaining abode of the Asiatic Lion, Panthera leo persica. The Government of Gujarat has declared an area of 1412.1 sq km as Protected Area (PA) which comprises 258.7 sq km as National Park and 1153.4 sq km as Sanctuary. Besides this 470.5 sq km of forest area forms a buffer Zone as reserve, protected and unclassified forest. Thus, a total area of 1882.6 sq km makes up the Gir forest.

On cam: Asiatic lions being harassed by locals at Gir
Forest officials have found another scary evidence of rampant illegal lion shows and harassment of ‘Gujarat's Pride’ the Asiatic lion. Video clips found from seven persons, who were arrested from a village of Gir-Somnath district for such illegal activity last month, show how locals harass the lions by throwing bait and relish the feline's desperate attempts to grab it. A video that went viral on Wednesday shows two persons, one of them with a hen in his hand, teasing a lioness standing just a few feet away from him in a farm. These persons are partying in the farm while a village woman is cooking for them.
Gir Forest National Park Safari - Sasan Gir
Gir Forest National park was established in 1965, with a total area of 1412 sq km. in the 19th century the rulers used to invite the British Colonists for hunting because of that only dozen Asiatic lions were left in India, but as a results of efforts of the government now there are more than 500 lions are in this park. More than 400 plant species were recorded in survey of gir forest. And more than 300 species of birds lives here.

President Ram Nath Kovind Enjoys Asiatic Lion Safari In Gir forest During Gujarat Tour - Sasan gir
The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo leo) is a lion population in Gujarat, India, which is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List because of its small population size. Since 2010, the lion population in and around Gir Forest National Park has steadily increased. In May 2015, the 14th Asiatic Lion Census was conducted over an area of about 20,000 km (7,700 sq mi); the lion population was estimated at 523 individuals, comprising 109 adult males, 201 adult females and 213 cubs. In August 2017, the Asiatic Lion Census revealed 650 wild individuals.
The Asiatic lion was first described by the Austrian zoologist Johann N. Meyer under the trinomen Felis leo persicus. Its historical range included eastern Turkey, Iran, Mesopotamia, and from east of the Indus River to Bengal and Narmada River in Central India.
The Asiatic lion is one of five pantherine cats inhabiting India, apart from Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, snow leopard and clouded leopard. It is also known as the Indian lion and Persian lion
Habitat:
Asiatic lions were once distributed upto the state of West Bengal in east and Rewa in Madhya Pradesh, in central India. At present Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is the only abode of the Asiatic lion. The last surviving population of the Asiatic lions is a compact tract of dry deciduous forest and open grassy scrublands in southwestern part of Saurashtra region of Gujarat.
Characteristics:
Asiatic lions are slightly smaller than African lions. Adult males weigh 160 to 190 kg, while females weigh 110 to 120 kg. The height at the shoulders is about 3.5 ft (110 cm). The maximum recorded total length of a male Asiatic lion is 2.92m (115 inches) including the tail. The most striking morphological character, which is always seen in Asiatic lions, and rarely in African lions, is a longitudinal fold of skin running along its belly. The fur ranges in colour from ruddytawny, heavily speckled with black, to sandy or buff-grey, sometimes with a silvery sheen in certain lights. Males have only moderate mane growth at the top of the head, so that their ears are always visible.
Conservation:
The lions face the usual threats of poaching and habitat fragmentation. Three major roads and a railway track pass through the Gir Protected Area (PA). Also, there are three big temples inside the PA that attract large number of pilgrims, particularly during certain times of the year. There has been an increase in lion population, and more than 200 lions stay outside the PA. Though the conflict is not high now, with changing lifestyles and values these may increase in the future. There are also cases of lions dying by falling into the unguarded wells around the Gir PA. The Asiatic lion faces threat of genetic inbreeding arising from a single population in one place
