A Councillor Brands Some Of The New A428 Plans As 'Idiotic'
Highways England plan to leave the A428 as a single lane at the Girton interchange permanently. But conservative district councillor Ruth Betson opposes these plans and is fighting for change. Ruth believes these plans are idiotic, ridiculous and will only add to traffic issues. Our reporter Charlotte Racher went to find out more. *HIGHWAYS ENGLAND DID NOT COMMENT IN TIME FOR BROADCAST*

Old Photographs St Andrews Fife Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of St Andrews, a town on the east coast of Fife. The town is home to the University of St Andrews, the third oldest university in the English-speaking world and the oldest in Scotland. The Old Course at St Andrews is considered by many to be the home of golf because the sport was first played on the Links at St Andrews in the early 1400s. Members played on what would become the Old Course, but because it was the only course St Andrews had, it was not yet known as the Old Course. Golf was becoming increasingly popular in Scotland until in 1457, when James II of Scotland banned golf because he felt that young men were playing too much golf instead of practising their archery. The ban was held by the following kings of Scotland until 1502, when King James IV became a golfer himself and decided to remove the ban on golf. The establishment of the present town began around 1140 by Bishop Robert on a L-shaped vill, possibly on the site of the ruined St Andrews Castle. According to a charter of 1170, the new burgh was built to the west of the Cathedral precinct, along Castle Street and possibly as far as what is now known as North Street. This means that the lay-out may have led to the creation of two new streets, North Street and South Street, from the foundations of the new St Andrews Cathedral filling the area inside a two-sided triangle at its apex. The northern boundary of the burgh was the southern side of the Scores, the street between North Street and the sea, with the southern by the Kinness Burn and the western by the West Port. The burgh of St Andrews was first represented at the great council at Scone Palace in Perthshire in 1357. St Leonards School, formerly St Leonards and St Katherines School, is an independent school, founded by the University of St Andrews in the nineteenth century. Dame Louisa Lumsden was appointed the School's first Headmistress in 1877. Louisa was born on 31 December 1840 in Aberdeen. She was a pioneer of female education. Louisa was a student and a tutor in classics at Girton College, Cambridge, England. Headmistress of St Leonards School, Fife, and the first warden of University Hall, University of St Andrews. She is credited with introducing lacrosse to St Leonards School. A fishing harbour is mentioned as early as 1222, and another medieval record dates from 1363; no doubt the estuary here has been used as a natural shelter since the earliest days of navigation. The long pier, was rebuilt in 1656 with stone largely taken from the Castle, and underwent further repairs in 1722. In 1788 half of what was probably a newly built extension of the pier fell down and had to be restored, in 1816 the harbour as a whole was in ruins. The length of the pier also seems to have varied from period to period. The West Port at the West end of St Andrews’ South Street is the best surviving example of a Scottish fortified gate.Market Street and the linking cross streets and wynds emerged as the burgh developed westwards, and by the 16th century, St Andrews had reached the peak of its mediaeval cultural development, and was one of the great historic cities of Europe. To the east of the town centre, lie the ruins of St Andrew's Cathedral. The ruins of St Andrews Castle are situated on a cliff-top to the north of the town

Tom and Jerry, 52 Episode - Tom and Jerry in the Hollywood Bowl (1950)
The short three-minute fragment from series is a 1950 American one-reel animated cartoon and is the 52nd Tom and Jerry short directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. The cartoon, as the title suggests, is set at the Hollywood Bowl in California, where Tom is conducting a large orchestra. The cartoon was animated by Kenneth Muse, Irven Spence, Ray Patterson and Ed Barge. It was released to theatres in September 16, 1950 and reissued in 1957.
Interesting facts:
The music was scored by Scott Bradley, making use of Johann Strauss II's Overture of Die Fledermaus, with intro and outro making use of Franz Liszt's Les préludes.

The Impact of 'Maximum Pressure' Sanctions on Iran - LSE - Persian Society
A very timely panel discussion about the impact of 'Maximum Pressure' sanctions on Iran, hosted by the LSE Persian Society.
Topic of discussion:
Iran is currently under crippling sanctions re-imposed by the United States following President Trump's withdrawal from the JCPOA in May, 2018. These sanctions have not only suffocated Iran’s oil, shipping and banking industries but have had profound humanitarian implications by restricting domestic access to medicine and aid - even during the recent floods that devastated the nation. The Trump administration has called it the biggest sanctions action the United States has ever undertaken against Iran, as a part of 'Maximum Pressure' campaign designed to cripple Iran's economy. Iran's President Rouhani has labeled it an act of “economic war” and said his country would win. This panel discussion seeks to highlight and assess the impact of these sanctions on Iran's economy as well as the health and welfare of the Iranian people.

SUMMARY
=======
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a sovereign country lying off the north-western coast of the European mainland. The United Kingdom includes the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the United Kingdom that shares a land border with another sovereign state—the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the United Kingdom is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to its east, the English Channel to its south and the Celtic Sea to its south-south-west, giving it the 12th-longest coastline in the world. The Irish Sea lies between Great Britain and Ireland. With an area of 242,500 square kilometres (93,600 sq mi), the United Kingdom is the 78th-largest sovereign state in the world. It is also the 22nd-most populous country, with an estimated 66.0 million inhabitants in 2017.
The sovereign state is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. The monarch is Queen Elizabeth II, who has reigned since 1952, making her the longest-serving current head of state. The United Kingdom's capital and largest city is London, a global city and financial centre with an urban area population of 10.3 million. Other major urban areas in the UK include the conurbations centred on Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow and Liverpool.
The United Kingdom consists of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Their capitals are London, Belfast, Edinburgh, and Cardiff respectively. Apart from England, the countries have devolved administrations, each with varying powers. The nearby Isle of Man, Bailiwick of Guernsey and Bailiwick of Jersey are not part of the UK, being Crown dependencies with the British Government responsible for defence and international representation. The medieval conquest and subsequent annexation of Wales by the Kingdom of England, followed by the union between England and Scotland in 1707 to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, and the union in 1801 of Great Britain with the Kingdom of Ireland created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Five-sixths of Ireland seceded from the UK in 1922, leaving the present formulation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. There are fourteen British Overseas Territories, the remnants of the British Empire which, at its height in the 1920s, encompassed almost a quarter of the world's land mass and was the largest empire in history. British influence can be observed in the language, culture and legal systems of many of its former colonies.
The United Kingdom is a developed country and has the world's fifth-largest economy by nominal GDP and ninth-largest economy by purchasing power parity. It has a high-income economy and has a very high Human Development Index, ranking 14th in the world. It was the world's first industrialised country and the world's foremost power during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The United Kingdom remains a great power with considerable economic, cultural, military, scientific and political influence internationally. It is a recognised nuclear weapons state and is sixth in military expenditure in the world. It has been a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council since its first session in 1946. It has been a leading member state of the European Union (EU) and its predecessor, the European Economic Community (EEC), since 1973; however, a referendum in 2016 resulted in 51.9% of UK voters favouring leaving the European Union, and the country's exit is being negotiated. The United Kingdom is also a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the Council of Europe, the G7, the G20, NATO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Interpol and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Cruise Ship Vacation for Adults Only Would You Pay More To Go On A Cruise Without Kids? P&O cruise Lines is going to convert the P&O Aurora into an adult only cruise ship in March 2019. Why would they do that? Also Sacramento wants to host the NBA All Star Game in 2022 or 2023 and they need a ton of hotel rooms to handle the crowds. The solution? Why not charter a few big cruise ships, park them near downtown and voila! Tons of full service hotel rooms for the week of the game and then the ships go away!
