Here goes the full length version of our trip to Gizzy. Lots of time in and around water. Gisborne is a small seaside city with a relaxed way of life, with cool people who love and are very talented at their water sports. Because the main State Highway bypasses this location it is often missed by our foreign visitors, which is a shame because there is so much more to see and do here and all the way up the East Coast of the North Island of NZ. I was only in town for two days to compile this video, however there are still good wine tours, a cool little museum if you're into that type of stuff. But most importantly this location (including the entire East Coast) has a rich heritage of Maori culture that can be sought out if you look hard enough.

Gisborne Botanical Gardens Grand Opening
SLIDES, a flying fox, climbing frames and trampolines were covered in hundreds of kids who attended yesterday’s grand opening of the new $400,000 playground at the Botanical Gardens. The playground has been under construction since mid-October following a public consultation process. The upgrade saw the complete removal of the old wooden structures.
Those who attended the opening were unanimous in their praise. Joe Samuels attended with his four kids — Jasmine (4), Kingston (5), Aria (8) and Kacie (12). “It is awesome, it looks damn good,” he said. “It is much better than it was before. There are more shade areas and the general set-up is great.”Mr Samuels said the new playground made visiting the gardens more fun for children and parents. Daughter Jasmine agreed. Her favourite piece of new equipment was the children’s slide atop an artificial mound. Aspects like the mound also made keeping track of children easier, said Leonie O’Dey. “The layout makes the playground safer. I have two children and it has been well planned so you can see them both.” The O’Deys live around the corner and visit the playground at least three times a week. “I brings locals together. It is just awesome.

Gisborne Garagiste Wine Company
The Gisborne Garagiste Wine Company Garagiste [Fr., noun ]- a term coined to describe those small producers in Bordeaux whose production, according to wine writer Michel Bettane, was so small that it would fit into a garage.
Characterised as winemaker's wine vins de garage wines come from previously unknown estates without proven track record or pedigree. Alternatively such wine is referred to as super-cuvée or microchâteauThe emergence of Château Valandraud involving Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud, developed the description of a movement. Founded in 1989 on a 1 hectare plot in Saint-Émilion, and with limited funds, much work was done with minimal equipment in their garage. The high levels of labour and low output yields have defined the method of production and lead to the Garagiste title. With the growth of Château Valandraud the Thunevins have since taken on several projects, including Thunevin-Calvet. With a determination to produce great wine, Jean-Roger Calvet decided to leave the local co-operative and began vinifying tiny quantities of wines from old vine Grenache and Carignan in his garage in Maury.
In 2001 he teamed up with Jean-Luc Thunevin, who shared this vision leading to the formation of Domaine Thunevin-Calvet . Over the years, the domaine has continued to grow and the 'garage' has been replaced by a spacious well equipped winery. In Gisborne former workmates and winemakers Peter Bristow, Brent Laidlaw and Russell Walsh have embraced this philosophy to produce wines for the Gisborne Garagiste Wine Company. During the 2000 vintage in Maury, France Brent Laidlaw worked with Jean --Roger Calvet and has taken this philosophy to team up with Peter and Russell in 2012 to produce small quantities of wine which express the vintage and vineyard site in the style of wine we enjoy.Produced in a small tin shed on Stout Street , Gisborne, the Gisborne Garagiste Company wines seek to excite the senses ,engage the tastebuds and encourage discussion.

Valentine's Day at Wrights Vineyard
THE first grapes harvested for the 2017 vintage came in, on Valentines Day in Gisborne, with a bit of a romantic twinge. Wrights Vineyard and Winery owners Geoff and Nicola Wright picked grapes for their verjuice today, sold to restaurants around New Zealand.
Nicola, a lawyer, came to Gisborne to find Mr Right, who she hoped would be a wine maker, 15 years ago. Now married and with half a football team of boys to help, love is still in the air at the Manutuke vineyard and winery. With no roses nearby, Geoff presented Nicola with a sunflower as the harvest began this morning. “It’s quite romantic harvesting grapes on Valentines Day, but also hard work,” he said. Metservice have compared this year’s summer to 1998, which produced some stunning wines from this region, Geoff said. “At present our grapes are one-and-a-half weeks ahead this year. Touch wood the season carries on being a stunner for the Gisborne wine region.” He has just returned from a sales trip around New Zealand. “Our organic wines are in huge demand all around the country. Our Chinese market is expanding and we have now set up a merchant team in China promoting our wines and we plan to utilise Alibaba online platform this year. “In years to come our grapes from Gisborne Vintage 2017 will be in high demand. We are excited to be part of this journey for the Gisborne wine region.”

Gisborne A&P Show 2014
THE pop-up-fairground, the bagpipes and the car-boot buffets . . . the 2014 Poverty Bay A&P Show was once again a festive mix of attractions from the familiar to the new. “It was epic,” says Show association manager Derek Allan. “We had the regular displays and events and a range of new attractions such as the House and Garden expo. “The expo proved very popular and bodes well for the future.”
Attendance numbers were up on last year’s 19,027 and overall the Show went very well. Among the perennial events were the pet lamb, goat and calf parade. Dressed lambs featured a pirate lamb, two bat-lambs, an armed and dangerous lamb, and several princesses. The Gisborne Herald Farmyard was as popular as ever and featured exotics such as an aquarium of red-eared turtles who stared at their neighbours — a clutch of fluffy turkey chicks. In a carpeted cage, a pile of polydactal (multi-toed) Maine coon kittens snoozed in one corner while across the way, a pen of otherwise excitable children were calmed by rabbits. Stu Potter, author of Gisborne-based children’s book The Fish Story, and illustrator Miri Britain ran a stall in the house and garden section. There was a lot of interest in the book, said Ms Britain. “Many people knew about it before the Show. We had good feedback and sold a few copies.”
The blacksmith’s red-brick veneered caravan was parked in its usual place nearby while further up the track the ground thudded with restored pumps and British-made work-horses such as Taranaki man Alf Christian’s one-third scale traction engine. Marc Bolland, originally from Warwickshire, England, recalled using two similar stationary engines to draw a plough up by rope up and down the field. The avenues of displays in the trade park were particularly busy. The Tourism Eastland tent saw a steady stream of visitors all day, said sales and marketing assistant Nicole Breingan. “A lot of people are coming in to vote for the Out East photo competition. They are loving it, and we are launching our new visitor guide here. We have had plenty of takers. More people have come through than last year.” New events in the main arena included a dramatised rescue of car-crash victims. “I got a request from SADD — Students Against Dangerous Driving — to see if there was something if they could do,” says Mr Allan. “As soon as they got involved, all the emergency services were behind it.” In the dramatisation, a scythe-wielding Grim Reaper was thwarted as St John’s medics resuscitated one crash victim while firemen used the Jaws of Life to cut open the crushed car and remove another victim. The ECT rescue helicopter swooped in to take the stabilised patients to hospital. Meanwhile, police dog-handlers set an enthusiastic German Shepherd on the trail of the runaway driver. The padded driver tried to bolt but was taken down by the police dog, cuffed and led away. Other new events included bucking ram rides and a bareback donkey race. Commentator Neville Clark accompanied the chaos with non-stop comedic banter. “We are really proud to have him here,” says Mr Allan.“You could take him anywhere in New Zealand and he would be a hit.”

A&P SPRING SHOW RIDES GISBORNE
JAZZ bands, dogs riding ponies, Scottish dancers, wood-chopping, sheep shearing, a new heifer competition and thousands of people made for a lively and entertaining Show this year. Show president Murray Webb said the show went off without a hitch. “It has been extremely well run this year,” he said.
“The Show brings people together.” The introduction of the heifer competition drew a large crowd. Patch and Nicola Murphy took home the top prize for the yearling heifer.Mr Webb hopes to make the new competition an annual Show tradition. “We would like to make it bigger.” While organisers said initial gate numbers were up on Friday, some stall holders around the grounds said the crowd was smaller and business slower than usual. Official attendance numbers will be released this week. Stallholder Flora Ataria said she blamed it on the increase of shops selling the same things. “The shops have become repetitive and there is not as much variety.” Throughout the two-day show, former Masterchef competitor Jax Hamilton gave cooking demonstrations. She loved the fresh produce in Gisborne and wanted to show people that cooking was easy, she said. “I like to take the perception of an ingredient and completely change it.” Her demonstration ended with three audience members invited on to the stage to take part in a mini Masterchef. She asked them to put together a dessert in one minute, with the prize a signed copy of Jax’s cookbook. Audiences watching the lambing demonstration were given a dose of farming reality as one of the lambs was stillborn. Eastland Vet Jamie Foxley was on the scene and had to tell the crowd it was not going to end well. About a dozen new lambs were born over the two days.Town meets country For decades, the A and P show has been “where town meets country’’ and this was apparent as people sat with home-made lunches and picnics, enjoying a glass of wine and watching events unfold. “Our family have been coming for 50-odd years and it is something passed down through the generations,” Barbara Sadlier said. “It is always a lovely day out and we love seeing our grandchildren enjoying themselves.” The clouds finally opened up and heavy rain began around the start of the shearing competition, which featured defending world champion Rowland Smith. “This year is bigger than normal since we are heading into the world championships,” shearing commentator Koro Mullins said. “The sheep are also more of a challenge, bigger and woollier.”
As the crowd filled in for the main event, the guitar licks of Pink Floyd’s Run Like Hell echoed through the shed. Mr Mullins told the four competitors that they would have to run like hell to compete with the world champ. As the competitors were announced, the loudest cheers went up for Gisborne resident Tama Nia Nia. The final tally after 16 sheep saw Rowland Smith come on top with a time of 15 minutes and 37 seconds. He also passed muster with the judges over the quality of his shearing and Nia Nia finished second overall. Nia Nia was happy with the result and said it was a challenge to compete in front of family and friends. “I could hear everyone yelling and I just had to block them out,” he said. On the way out, with the rain pouring down and the Show finishing for another year, a security guard helped with traffic. It had been a good year, he said. “No drama.”
