EGYPT: Pyramids & Sphinx - Giza (near Cairo)
The Giza Plateau in Egypt includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. All were built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. The site also includes several cemeteries and the remains of a workers' village. The pyramids of Giza and others are thought to have been constructed to house the remains of the deceased Pharaohs who ruled over Ancient Egypt. The people of Ancient Egypt believed that death on Earth was the start of a journey to the next world. The Plateau is located in Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt, and is elevated approximately 60 meters above sea-level.

The Great Pyramid of Giza (also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or Cheops) is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact. Initially at 146.5 metres (481 feet), the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for more than 3,800 years until Lincoln Cathedral was finished in 1311 AD.
Originally, the Great Pyramid was covered by limestone casing stones that formed a smooth outer surface; what is seen today is the underlying core structure. Some of the casing stones that once covered the structure can still be seen around the base.
Today tourists enter the Great Pyramid via the Robbers' Tunnel, a tunnel purportedly created around AD 820 by Caliph al-Ma'mun's workmen using a battering ram. The tunnel is cut straight through the masonry of the pyramid for approximately 27 metres (89 ft), then turns sharply left to encounter the blocking stones in the Ascending Passage. Unable to remove these stones the workmen tunnelled up beside them through the softer limestone of the Pyramid until they reached the Ascending Passage. It is possible to enter the Descending Passage from this point, but access is usually forbidden.
Khufu’s pyramid complex has three smaller queen's pyramids and five boat pits. The boat pits contained a ship, and the 2 pits on the south side of the pyramid still contained intact full-size ships. One of these ships has been restored and is on display at the foot of the pyramide in the Giza Solar boat museum. Like other buried Ancient Egyptian ships, it was apparently part of the extensive grave goods intended for use in the afterlife, and contained no bodies, unlike northern European ship burials.

The Pyramid of Khafre or Chephren is the second-tallest and second-largest of the Ancient Egyptian Pyramids of Giza and the tomb of the Fourth-Dynasty pharaoh Khafre (Chefren), who ruled from c.2558 to 2532 BC. It rises up to a height of 136.4 metres (448 ft). Khafre's pyramid sits on bedrock 10 m (33 ft) higher than Khufu's pyramid, which makes it appear to be taller.
_______________________________
The Pyramid of Menkaure is the smallest of the three main Pyramids of Giza, with an original height of 65.5 meters (215 feet). It now stands at 61 m (204 ft) tall. It is thought to have been built to serve as the tomb of the fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Menkaure. The pyramid's date of construction is unknown, because Menkaure's reign has not been accurately defined, but it was probably completed in the 26th century BC.
_______________________________
The Great Sphinx of Giza, commonly referred to as the Sphinx of Giza or just the Sphinx, is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. Cut from the bedrock, the original shape of the Sphinx has been restored with layers of blocks. It is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt. It is impossible to identify what name the creators called their statue, as the Great Sphinx does not appear in any known inscription of the Old Kingdom and there are no inscriptions anywhere describing its construction or its original purpose.

The new Grand Egyptian Museum is located on 50 hectares at Giza, two kilometres from the Grand Pyramids. Part of the collection of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo will be moved to the new museum, set to open in 2020. It will house Tutankhamun's complete collection. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo will remain open.

Cairo, Egypt - Giza Plateau - The Pyramids and the Sphinx HD (2013)
The Giza Necropolis is an archaeological site on the Giza Plateau, on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. This complex of ancient monuments includes the three pyramid complexes known as the Great Pyramids, the massive sculpture known as the Great Sphinx, several cemeteries, a workers' village and an industrial complex. It is located some 9 km (5 mi) inland into the desert from the old town of Giza on the Nile, some 25 km (15 mi) southwest of Cairo city centre. The pyramids, which have always loomed large as emblems of ancient Egypt in the Western imagination, were popularised in Hellenistic times, when the Great Pyramid was listed by Antipater of Sidon as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is by far the oldest of the ancient Wonders and the only one still in existence.

EGYPT: CAIRO: GIZA PLATEAU CONSERVATION PLAN
English/Nat
The Egyptian government has begun making good its promise to clear the plateau surrounding the Pyramids.
Last week, bulldozers knocked down ten storehouses that have cluttered the plateau and damaged the Sphinx nearby.
As the walls crumbled and clouds of dust blocked the view of one of the Pyramids, workers hammered away on other buildings, about 200 meters from the nearest Pyramid.
It's a part of the governmental master plan that these and many other buildings sheltering nearly 200,000 Egyptians near the site will be removed to protect the monuments.
Raw sewage from their settlements has seeped under the plateau, causing damage to the historic monuments. High concentration of salts contained within the raw sewage, turning limestone composite of the monuments to powder, have caused the decay of the Sphinx and threatens the three Pyramids.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It's a part of the conservation master plan of the Giza plateau ... that we should take out all the modern constructions from the plateau. Because, number one, it's a site pollution, you can not see modern houses beside this magnificent great Pyramid of Kufu. Also the water that comes from these houses goes down to the Sphinx and it does really affect the Sphinx. We know that the deterioration on the mother of the Sphinx comes by the underground water from these houses.
SUPERCAPTION: Dr. Zahi Hawas, Director of the Giza area for the Egyptian Antiquities Organization.
As these villages represent the original source of the decay, the government allocated 40 million Egyptian pounds (12 million Dollars) for their destruction and relocation away from the site.
It is a crucial step for the success of the restoration plan, which won't be brought about easily. The 200,000 inhabitants of Nazlet El Seman village are determined to stay.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We refuse to move from here, because we can't move from here. We used to live here, we can't move, we have no other, you know, we have nothing to do else but working here and living here.
SUPERCAPTION: Villager
The government is planning to stop any further decay of the monuments, which are not only important historically but, at the same time, are the key attraction in Egypt's multi- million dollar tourist industry.
One has to go; either the present, in the shape of the villagers, or the ancient civilization the hope for the region's future.

Mummification, Temple and Sphinx on The Giza Plateau, Cairo, Egypt
Guide, Nesereen, gave Travels With Sheila the details on how the ancient Egyptian priests mummified the King and carried him on their shoulders to a Funerary Temple for days of prayers before he was entombed. The Funerary Temple was usually connected to the pyramid by an underground tunnel and the priests had very stringent rules (watch the video to hear what...). I didn't know that...

Egypt: Archaeologists unveil 4,500-y.o. burial ground near Giza pyramids
Egypt has announced the discovery of a 4,500-year old burial ground near the Giza pyramids, on the outskirts of Cairo, Saturday, containing limestone statues and wooden coffins dating back to the Old Kingdom.
The site, which is located on the southeastern side of the Giza plateau, reportedly includes burial shafts and tombs from different periods, including an ancient limestone tomb of two priests from the fifth dynasty (around 2,500 BC).
The tomb is believed to belong to persons called Behnui-Ka, titled as the priest and the judge during the Old Kingdom, and Nwi, who held the title of 'the purifier' of King Khafre.
Footage shows a number of artefacts, funerary masks and wooden coffins with hieroglyphics, which according to the Egyptian antiquities ministry date back to the Late Period.
According to Director General of the Giza Plateau Ashraf Mohi, the cemetery was reused during the Late Period.
