The Giza Zoo, Cairo, Egypt; An 80 Acre Zoo in Giza
The Giza Zoo, Cairo, Egypt is among the different things to do in Egypt and the different places to visit.
Every country in the world has a zoo, Giza zoo is the Egyptian version for it and it carry different animals that might be interesting for some people to go see and in some cases even feed. Giza zoo is considered one of the few green areas in the city since it covers about 80 acres.
Giza zoo in Egypt is home to many endangered species and this makes it one of the things in the list of places to visit in Egypt. There are different Egypt tourist attractions that Giza zoo usually comes among but it could be placed at the end just in case you failed to go, you will never be missing on something that is historical and could not be found somewhere else.
A great place for a family day out - we would recommend that you visit early in the day to beat the crowds and bring a picnic with you - so loads of water, juice and snacks!
The amazing thing about the Giza Zoo's history is that it was once known as the best Zoo in the world - if not the 2nd best zoo in the world. Sadly it has fallen down the rankings over time.
Being one of the top things to do in Cairo, we have to mention that it was not just considered the best zoo in the world, but it was the first in other things as well, such as the rare species that have been successfully bred there, like the first California sea lion to be born in the Middle East in 2002.
Giza zoo history is so attracting that it pushes the tourist to go there once his/her leg touch the ground of Egypt. Giza zoo was firstly built by the Khedive Ismail and it was even part of the Harem gardens. Some of the plants which are still living until this very moment were imported from India, Africa, and South Africa, and some of the birds living there were taken from the Khedive's menagerie.
There are some improvements that the ones responsible for this zoo should go through in order to improve the tourism of Egypt and let the tourists put this as part of the list related to the places they want to visit. These improvements include cleaning the place a little bit more, taking more care of the animals living there because they might easily die, and paying good money to the workers in order to let them treat the visitors with good manners.
Taking your food and water with you will always keep you charged to walk through the whole place, which is big, and at the same time manage to take photos with all the animals that are found there and even feed them, which is considered the most interesting thing for the kids.
People are always comparing this Giza zoo to the other ones around the world, which might not be considered fair because countries are different along with their economy and workforce, so people might not be giving all what they have because they might not be receiving what they need. Giza zoo is a beautiful place that is considered historical at the same time and goes back to the 19th century, which means that you will be walking among those trees which are considered older than you are.
Instead of looking at the bad points that might be there, try to enjoy the place with your kids and family, get the chance to see those impressive animals and take the experience of feeding them, and walk through the whole place to enjoy those historical trees that have been planted there since a very long period of time.
Giza is a place that is considered close to different other Egypt attractions, which means that as well as being able to visit the Giza zoo, you could also go further and have a walk by the Nile when you finish and even get the chance to spot other places on your map and see how far is Giza zoo location from other good places to visit.
The Giza Zoo's Location is Charles De Gaulle, Oula, Giza and the cost or prices is around 5 EGP for locals and a little more for tourists.
Being in Giza, Egypt, there are still other things to visit, such as The Pharaonic Village ( visit Cairo Tower ( go to Orman Egypt ( or even go a little bit further and reach The Pyramids of Giza (

Most news stories on large cats are about the dwindling population and risk of extinction, but Egypt's Giza Zoo has quite the opposite problem.
It has too many lions and is struggling to house and feed them all.

EGYPT: CAIRO ZOO ANIMALS KEPT COOL DURING HEATWAVE
Arabic/Nat
It's hard to keep your cool in the Middle East - especially if you're a polar bear.
With a heatwave hitting the region, animals at the Cairo's Giza Zoo are finding it too hot for comfort.
Keepers are having to keep animals cool with ice cubes and cold showers.
Thousands of visitors come everyday to sit and picnic by the trees and lakes of Cairo's Giza Zoo.
But this summer, while the visitors are chilling out, the animals are heating up. For some, the summer heatwave has proved too much.
Consistently high temperatures have made life extremely uncomfortable, and now the Zoo's directors are having to supply ice to cool them down.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
Concerning the temperature and the rise in temperature and humidity we began to use huge ice cubes to be put on some of the animals that need it to make them feel in nature, and this is temporary until the ice rooms start to work for the animals or birds that like to live in cold atmospheres or under the ice.

Entry fees to the Giza Zoo are among of the cheapest in the world.
Each person pays 20 Egyptian piasters (6 cents U-S).
The government keeps the entry fees low to give every Egyptian the chance of visiting the Zoo. Many Egyptians make less than 100 U-S dollars a month.
Giza Zoo is the only open air place in Cairo which families can afford to visit, and so keeping the animals happy is important.

In summer I give him showers and when the temperature is high I give him more than five showers. As long as the weather is hot I spray him with water to make the atmosphere better for him.

The weather in Cairo recently has been as high as 40 degrees Celsius.
But despite the heat, for Cairo's polar bear population everything's cool thanks to the staff at Giza Zoo.
