Hiking Iceland's Vatnajökull Glacier
This was a day tour from Reykjavík to the Vatnajökull Glacier and the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lake, organized by Arctic Adventures (Note: This is not a sponsored video).
Jökulsárlón is a glacial lake with icebergs from the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, which is part of Vatnajökull. It has a has a maximum depth of about 814 feet (almost 250 meters).
Vatnajökull is a retreating glacier covering 3,127 square miles (8,098 km2), and has an average thickness of 1,300 feet (400 m). The glacier is covered with ashes from the Grímsvötn volcano, which erupted in 2004, forcing air traffic to be re-routed. Iceland has a large number of active volcanos, some under glaciers, and some peaking above them.
This is a long day tour - about 18 hours, including the trip from Reykjavík, stops for food, stopping at Jökulsárlón and hiking Vatnajökull. It is absolutely worth it though. Alternatively, you could drive across the South Coast of Iceland and stay in Höfn for a night.

Iceland - Jökulsárlón
Jökulsárlón is the best known and the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. It is situated at the south end of the glacier Vatnajökull between Skaftafell National Park and Höfn. Appearing first only in 1934-1935, the lake grew from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today because of heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers. Approaching a depth of 200 m, Jökulsárlón is now probably the second deepest lake in Iceland.
Jökulsárlón is separated from the sea by only a short distance, and the combined action of the glacier, the river that empties from the lake, and the ocean may eventually transform it into an inlet of the sea. There are plans to prevent this from happening, since the only road in the area passes over the narrow isthmus.
It is not far from the Icelandic Ring Road, and buses travelling between Höfn and Reykjavík usually stop there. The lake is filled with icebergs, which are calving off the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier.
At its shore, in the summertime, one has to watch out for the skúas, big seagulls which have their nests on the ground around the lake and which can occasionally become aggressive.

May 3 2016. A drive on the Ring Road in eastern Iceland, south of Egilsstadir along part of the longest section of gravel/unpaved road of Route 1. A mountain road without barriers. Watch out for the great panorama once the top of the hill has been reached. UPDATE This route via Breiðhaldsheiði is no longer part of Route 1 - it was changed in 2017 to stop tourists using this route in winter when the road was closed. It is now Route 95.

Iceland & Faröer 2018 with Subaru Forester
The breathtaking landscape of Iceland and the Faröer Islands is definitely worth a journey, so I wanted to do that as a camping trip. But which car to take for the challenging Highlands? Inspired by this video ( I bought a Subaru Forester, fitted some camping equipment inside and took the ferry towards Iceland...Besides one flat tire the Forester was a reliable mate crossing rivers, drifting through sand and offering enough space to even sleep in it! When it comes to AWD vehicles with stable allround-capabilities there is nothing else then Subaru! I hope this video inspires you a bit more to discover the world in your own speed, with your own choices - and with your own car!
