Hoffellsjökull Glacier - Landscape Photography in Iceland
Photographing Iceland part 2 - Hoffellsjökull Glacier: When planning our photography trip to Iceland, we aimed to visit a few glaciers with a view to trying some abstract photography. The Vatnajokull ice cap in south east Iceland is the largest of Iceland’s glaciers, covering around 9% of the country, and a number of outlet glaciers spill out from its main ice cap towards the south coast. Hofellsjokull is one of these outlet glaciers, and was only a short drive from where we were staying in Hofn so we decided to head up there one evening to see what we could photograph.

Iceland on Skateboard: Day 1 Hofn to Jokulsaron Glacier lagoon
78 km skate from Hofn to Jokulsaron
Day 0
Arrive at keflavik airport, took a bus to reykavik then another day to Hofn. Infamous iceland weather arrive soon once i touched Myik bus terminal to catch a bus.to Hofn. Shocked to know the bus to Hofn just 450 km cost $100. Thank God i am skating back. Thought is a direct bus trip, it turn out to be several transfers. Not expecting a bus transfer, i dropped my wallet in the Bus 51 during a bus transfer. luckily it contained small icelandic change. Bulk of my currency and credit card is in my body pouch. arrive at hofn 12 midnight, camped at a campsite. campsite was closed, i just found a spot and camp.
Day 1 7am
Woke up and do my registration at my campsite to pay for last night stay. should have ran off instead of paying $10. Waited till 8am for N1 pettrol station to open to get my food supplies. Chatted with the people at campsites. Some of them i will meet eventually many times along the way. After all, we are on the same route, especially the Thai Lady i kept on bumping into her. Story later.
Settled my supplies and charged my electrical stuff, ready to skate off. Roads wasnt that smooth. I have to keep looking for tiny strip of tarmac left in the narrow roads. Along the way, cars stopped to take videos and pictures of me. I am probably the next Iceland Attractions, surpassing the mountains and waterfalls. Even the drivers would stop to hand me water and snacks. this is so encouraging. I realised i dont need to spend money haha.
Stopped along the way for photo taking. Water streams are a good source of water for me to refill. Pure untouched icelandic water coming from mountains, it just cant get any fresher.
at 65km, stopped at Halls town. When i say town, it is just a couple of houses, accounting to populations probably to the number of fingers and toes i have. Ate traditional lamb stew and Arctic Char. Travelling, u dont have to suffer as a pauper. Scared myself to shit, i cant find my credit card. Having to lose my wallet the day earlier, losing my card in a seemingly expensive country will be a near apocalypse. Even the restaurant staff join in to help me search for my card. Eventually it is found in my knee pad.
Checked with the restaurant about the distance left to my day destination Jokulsarion 13km away. But that 13km seems so far away Everytime, i thought i have arrived, it turned out to false hope. finally, reached Glacier lagoon. Man, that is what i came for. I skated 78 km, seeing the icebergs floating is just breath taking. That is why i do my skate treks, I just have to earned to get a view of these through my hard skating. is just so sweet.
Camped at the black sand beach, with crystal like iceberg surrounding, felt like diamonds glittering in the beach.
Trip to Iceland - Episode 4: A glacier full of surprises
In this episode, the biggest glacier of Iceland appears on the horizon, as our three travelers enter the Vatnajökull National Park. But before setting foot on the vast stretch of ice, they take a little detour. Then, they end up in a surreal place, surrounded by the icebergs that break off from the Vatnajökull glacier and drift towards the open sea. When the time comes to find a place to spend the night, the campsite in Höfn seems to be the perfect choice.

Our First Glacier Trek - Svínafellsjökull Glacier, Iceland
The Svínafellsjökull Glacier on the south east coast of Iceland, it stretches down from the massive ice cap Vatnajökull.
This glacier was used as a film location for Interstellar as the ‘Mann’ ice planet. It was also used as a location for Game of Thrones and Batman Begins.
We take a trek over the glacier which is sprinkled with the black ash from the last eruption in the area (2011). The surface of ice exposed to the sun is white (the sun layer) but underneath the ice is a rich blue.
There are various hikes you can take over this spectacular landscape, we went for the easy one which is more of a trek but you do get to wear crampons and have an ice pick.

A Visit to Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon in December 2016
This is our Day 2 visit to the icy landscape of Iceland, After an overnight stay in Klaustur, we left for Jokulsarlon which is at the south eastern edge of Vatnajokull National Park. It was a tricky drive in the dark morning because of the snow covered road with the passing oncoming traffic. The hilly landscape on the left compared with the flat land on the right which open to the ocean. Jokulsarlon consisted of the lake which formed by the melted glacier with floating icebergs. Later, we drove to the nearby blacksand beach with scattered ice blocks washed ashore by the Atlantic ocean.

Hiking Iceland's Vatnajökull Glacier
This was a day tour from Reykjavík to the Vatnajökull Glacier and the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lake, organized by Arctic Adventures (Note: This is not a sponsored video).
Jökulsárlón is a glacial lake with icebergs from the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, which is part of Vatnajökull. It has a has a maximum depth of about 814 feet (almost 250 meters).
Vatnajökull is a retreating glacier covering 3,127 square miles (8,098 km2), and has an average thickness of 1,300 feet (400 m). The glacier is covered with ashes from the Grímsvötn volcano, which erupted in 2004, forcing air traffic to be re-routed. Iceland has a large number of active volcanos, some under glaciers, and some peaking above them.
This is a long day tour - about 18 hours, including the trip from Reykjavík, stops for food, stopping at Jökulsárlón and hiking Vatnajökull. It is absolutely worth it though. Alternatively, you could drive across the South Coast of Iceland and stay in Höfn for a night.

Treasure Island Ice Cave, Vatnajökull, Iceland
Treasure Island ice cave tour and glacier walk with Blue Iceland tour company:
Vatnajökull Glacier in south Iceland is the largest ice cap in Europe, covering 9-11% of Iceland. Next to Jökulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, the area boasts ample opportunity for glacier hiking and ice caving. It is a must-have stop for Iceland tourists exploring the Ring Road, Golden Circle, or south coast of Iceland. The area is situated between Vìk and Höfn, making it an easy day trip for anyone in the area.
