Gladstone, Queensland
Centre of the Southern Reef - The Gladstone Region is a unique area of Queensland - a region where opportunity awaits. This dynamic city basks in a sub-tropical climate with islands, waterways and beaches on the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef. So many landscapes, variety and so much sunshine provide the visitor with endless opportunities.
At the heart of the region, the city of Gladstone overlooks its natural deep water harbour. To the south lie the shires of Calliope and Miriam Vale with idyllic, secluded beaches and scenic National Parks. 1770 is the first place in Queensland that Captain James Cook stepped ashore. Boyne Island is renowned for its beautiful foreshore parks, while its sister city of Tannum Sands offers long sandy beaches for safe coastal recreation.
The reef islands within the Gladstone Region are true coral cays, and day trips are on offer to Lady Musgrave Island and Fitzroy Lagoon where visitors can enjoy diving, snorkelling, fishing, reef walking or exploring the flora and fauna
The region has several impressive National Parks which add camping and 4 wheel driving to the adventures you can experience in the area. The spectacular cliffs of the Kroombit Tops are cloaked in diverse flora and fauna. Mount Castletower National Park lies at the base of Lake Awoonga with its impressive, yet rugged terrain. Deepwater and Eurimbula National Parks provide the contrast of open eucalypt and paperback forests with lush rainforests and quiet beaches.
Gladstone's Tondoon Botanic Gardens are one of Australia's few totally native botanic gardens. The display areas specialise in the plants of the surrounding and Tropical North Queensland regions. The Gladstone Entertainment Centre, forms the focal point of the city's cultural activities. The Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum is a colonial Georgian structure which houses three exhibition areas.

Bangarra Dance Company presents Kinship at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre
Bangarra Dance - A breathtaking theatrical dance experience
Bangarra Dance Theatre's Kinship tells its story through dance, bringing to the stage movement that communicates and awaken people’s awareness about Aboriginal culture.
Kinship consists of two dance theatre works that celebrate and explore Indigenous culture and perspectives. The works show the contrast between traditional culture’s rich embrace and the issues that manifest through the sense of cultural difference and the threat of cultural loss.
The Brolga (Gudurrku), story is inspired by the totemic systems in the Australian Aboriginal culture and the Kinship program investigates being Aboriginal in the 21st century, asking important questions about identity.
The GECC are offering students and teachers an opportunity to enrich cultural learning and understanding with a $20.00, 2 for 1 ticket offer ($10.00 per ticket).

Tongues wagging over Canstruction Gladstone
Nine thousand cans and bound only by their imaginations, engineers from leading industry groups participated in Gladstone's first Canstruction global design and build competition on 5 August.
The Gladstone Entertainment and Convention Centre was transformed into an engineering mecca, where the teams displayed their impressive creations.
From cranes to whales and even a giant puppy, the canned structures reaped bewildered responses from passing crowds.
The winning entry of the day went to Queensland Alumina Limited team, which elected to sculpt a single droplet of freshwater foregrounding a map of Australia, made of 2236 cans of pet food and weighing a whopping 610kg.
All cans from the event were donated to the local RSPCA, with lots of wagging tails happy to accept the gift.

Mark de Mori - Ch 9 News Australia - November 2013
Mark de Mori vs Ivica Perkovic
Channel 9 News Australia - November 17, 2013
Fight News:
Australian Heavyweight Mark The Dominator 'de Mori (25-1-2, 15 KO's) defeated Ivica Perkovic (20-22, 15 KO's) from Croatia via unanimous points decision over 12 rounds to claim the vacant WBF heavyweight title and also retain his WBU heavyweight title title at Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre in Queensland, Australia tonight.
de Mori was the busier fighter from the outset constantly using his fast jab against the tough Perkovic.
Perkovic frustrated de Mori at times with his clinching which prevented the Australian from landing big shots in close.
But it was de Mori who outboxed Perkovic and landed the cleaner punches during the fight.
After 12 rounds all three judges scored the fight for de Mori. Scores were 118-110, 118 -110 and a surprising 115-113.
De Mori was very happy after this victory and was also happy to get 12 rounds of boxing in tonight.
He was a very tough opponent that tested my stamina, he took me the distance and that's exactly what I needed after so many early knockouts de Mori said
He had fought several top 10 fighters including one that beat David Tua in New Zealand tonight
Perkovic praised de Mori and said he has a positive future
Mark is a warrior, has great stamina. Very impressed. He was always throwing punches even when tied up Perkovic said
Tonight's was de Mori's fifth victory in a busy 2013. The Dominator plans to return to Split in Croatia to keep training and look towards his next fight.
