Gladstone Pottery Museum, Stoke-on-Trent, UK - with kids #ad
A day out with kids at Gladstone Pottery Museum in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent - the last complete Victorian pottery factory in the country, it has four of the few remaining bottle ovens left in the Potteries. As well as being able to see each step in the pottery making process, you can throw your own pot, create a ceramic flower and paint decorations, along with exploring the exhibition on toilets... My daughter tried her hand at everything on the first stop of our weekend in Stoke-on-Trent.
Visit or stokemuseums.org.uk/gpm/ for more details.
Disclosure: My visit was organised through Visit Stoke (visitstoke.com) as part of the Stoke-on-Trent Cultural Destinations Project, an Arts Council project which aims to grow the visitor economy and strengthen the city’s year-round cultural offer. All opinions are my own.

The Gladstone Pottery Museum is a working museum of a medium-sized coal-fired pottery, typical of those once common in the North Staffordshire area of England from the time of the industrial revolution in the 18th century to the mid 20th century. It is a grade II* listed building.
The museum is located in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. It is also included in one of the regional routes of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.Despite the name of the museum, it is a complex of buildings from two works, the Gladstone and the Roslyn. The protected features include the kilns. As there are less than 50 surviving bottle ovensin Stoke-on-Trent (and only a scattering elsewhere in the UK), the museum's kilns along with others in the Longton conservation area represent a significant proportion of the national stock of the structures.
The Toilet History Museum is a private museum in Kyiv, Ukraine that contains the largest collection of toilet-related souvenirs and items in the world, including historic chamber pots, squatting pans, and urinals. The museum was founded in 2006 by a Ukrainian couple who worked in the plumbing business and is currently housed in a building within the Kiev Fortress. In 2016, the Guinness Book of Records recognized it as the The largest collection of souvenir toilet bowls in the world.
-:History:-
A pottery factory first opened on the site in 1787. It was run by the Shelley family who produced earthenware and decorated plates and dishes produced by Josiah Wedgwood in Etruria. The site was purchased in 1789 by William Ward who split it into two pot banks: the Park Place Works subsequently named the Roslyn works, and the Wards Pot Bank which was sold to John Hendley Sheridan in 1818.In the 1850s Sheridan had rented out the site to Thomas Cooper who employed 41 adults and 26 children to produce china and parian figures.
By 1876 the Wards site had passed into the hands of R Hobson and Co and had been renamed Gladstone, after the politician William Ewart Gladstone.
The factory opened as a museum in 1974, the buildings having been saved from demolition in 1970 when the pottery closed (some ten years after its bottle ovens were last fired). In the 1990s ownership passed to Stoke-on-Trent City Council. The museum has shown its commitment to industrial heritage by functioning as a working pottery. However, production has had to be curtailed for financial reasons and the museum is therefore less of a living museum than it was. As at 2014 the Middleport Pottery in Burslem, which is used for commercial production, is arguably the only working Victorian pottery in the city of Stoke-on-Trent.

Gladstone Pottery Museum 2018
Great Day out at the Gladstone Pottery Museum, Stoke on Trent
Aerial Drone Footage, Longton, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, UK. 14th April 2018
This is not an extensive tour of Longton just a quick look at a development site and views of the immediate surrounding area. Gladstone Pottery Museum, Longton Library, Longton Snooker Club, Longton Precinct, Longton Cemetery as well as a number of Pottery works and retail & industrial businesses can be seen surrounding the main A50 road.
It is great to see new investment in the Longton area in the form of a new 1,424 square metre building development. German food retailer Lidl is set to relocate its Longton outlet to bigger premises on the old Somerfield site off Spring Garden Road near Goms Mill, which has been mostly derelict for over a decade. The new store should be open in early 2019 with at least 25 new jobs being created.
Filmed on a partly cloudy afternoon on 14th April 2018 on a DJI Phantom 3 Standard with stock remote controller, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Litchi app. HD Quality. Edited with Hitfilm Express.

The Potteries 1964 Gone but Not forgot (Hanley and the six towns)DOCUMENTARY
When the swinging 60s hit Stoke its teenagers began to dance the twist and, on the surface at least, the city was thriving in the modern era. But this ATV documentary shows how the six towns that came together fifty years earlier to form Stoke on Trent, are still proud of their separate identities. With this historical backdrop Stoke is trying to modernise and move forward with Hanley as its new civic centre.
