Australian Winemakers: Ben Glaetzer, Glaetzer Wines, Barossa Valley
Ben Glaetzer, Glaetzer Wines, Barossa Valley, Australia
Glaetzer Wines| Winery | Vineyard, Barossa Valley, South Australia Wine Guide - WBTL
Colin Glaetzer and his son (and winemaking whizz) Ben (also see MITOLO) have really lifted the quality of their own wines in recent vintages. Grapes come from unirrigated vineyards in the Ebenezer district of the Barossa Valley. The top wines are now very good indeed, not the blockbusters of old but more sophisticated, expressive wines with at least a suggestion of terroir. Tiny amounts are made of Amon-Ra, an unfiltered Shiraz produced from 100 year old vines and aged in French and American oak. Very concentrated and very intense, it has a fabulous fruit expression with plum, carob, blackberry and preserved black fruits but above all is very complete and very classy – best with at least 5-10 years age. More affordable are Bishop Shiraz and Wallace Shiraz/Grenache. These are supple and characterful with plenty of fruit, the latter almost like a Côtes du Rhône. Anaperenna, made since 04 and initially labelled Godolphin, is a Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon blend (70/30) that is very ripe, concentrated and powerful, needing at least 6 years age.
Matthew Jukes discusses Glaetzer Wines from Barossa Valley, South Australia

The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family left Germany on board the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer “Habsburg” and took seven weeks to reach their final destination of Port Adelaide. From here they settled in a country town called Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley where they started their new life in Australia. The family were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley.
Over a century later, winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established Glaetzer Wines, a boutique family owned winery producing premium Barossa Valley wines. Today Colin’s son Ben carries on the wine making traditions at Glaetzer Wines. Indeed it was the birth of Glaetzer Wines that signalled a new era for Colin’s family which boasts more than its fair share of winemakers.
THE HISTORY OF THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN RED
The history of the Australian wine industry is hinged on one wine style. It’s not Grange. This is a wine far more unique, far more definitively Australian; indeed, more highly regarded even than Grange.
The Shiraz Cabernet blend is an Australian institution. This country championed it, refined it and still does it better than anyone else on the planet. It’s our only unique, definitive red. This is Australia’s national treasure of the red wine world, and it deserves to be recognised and celebrated as Australia’s greatest red wine.
The future of Australia’s wine industry depends on it just as much as has its past. The Shiraz Cabernet blend is the unique draw-card of the future, the secret weapon to take the Australian wine industry into its next era. The Great Australian Red is free of the constraints of region, price and style, drawing together great examples of all styles, at all price points, from every Australian state.
Quintessentially Wine is the foremost Luxury Wine Club in the world. We have procured the services of Matthew Jukes to select our wine list. Of the 40,000 bottles he tastes every year, only 100 make the grade. We only offer the best, most sought after wines to our members.

Wine Tasting 6: 2003 Thorn Clarke Quartage fm Barossa Aus.
An Australian wine that is from the Barossa Valley. A blend of 4 grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. On the nose, sweet cassis (Ribena) or black current cordial, black plum, cherry pipe tobacco, sweet dill and sweet black liquorice. Upon tasting, the above all came up with secondary nuances like coffee, cola, spice and dark chocolate. A forward, full body wine that has balanced acidity and structure. The tannin is fine. This comfort wine is a good expression of a new world fruit driven pseudo-style Bordeaux. The finish is long with a beautiful tingling feeling at the back of my throat. Rating (91-93 points). Tasted 24 November 2006 by Michael Lam of the Beverage Review.
