Murano glass has been a famous product of the Venetian island of Murano for centuries. Located off the shore of Venice, Italy, Murano was a commercial port as far back as the 7th century. By the 10th century it had become a well-known city of trade. Today Murano remains a destination for tourists and art and jewellery lovers alike.
The process of making Murano glass is rather complex. Most Murano glass art is made using the lampworking technique. The glass is made from silica which becomes liquid at high temperatures. As the glass passes from a liquid to a solid state, there is an interval when the glass is soft before it hardens completely. This is when the glass-master can shape the material.

How Murano Glass Vases and Sculptures In Sbruffo Technique Are Made In a Murano Glass Factory
Murano Glass is hand-made according to ancient techniques on Murano island in Venice, Italy. Sbruffo technique was invented in Murano's glass-making workshops in 1500's. To make sbruffo art glass, the artisans wrap a thin layer of blown glass in one color around the molten glass core of another color, then quickly break the glass of the outer layer. As a result, the core is covered in a rough layer of different-colored glass. They then repeat the process several times, often with different colors, to create a unique and distinct effect of lava-like rough layers of colors.
Today there are few Murano Glass factories that still make Sbruffo vases, bowls, tumblers, and figurines. The practice requires precision, skill, patience, and lots of work to smooth out the rough parts after the item is crafted. Only the most experienced artisans make Sbruffo pieces, and very few galleries and shops on Murano carry them. We at GlassOfVenice have a wide variety of Sbruffo Murano Glass vases, drinking glasses, and sculptures in deep and beautiful colors, representing the best in Murano Glass art and craftsmanship.

Murano Glass Millefiori Fazzoletto Vase Making In Venice, Italy
Murano Glass Fazzoletto is a type of design, where the glass is shaped like the folds of a handkerchief, or fazzoletto, in Italian.
Murano Glass is an ancient craft, and as many believe, a form of art, which has been practiced in Venice since the ninth century. After moving to Murano island by the decree of the Doge in 1291, the glass masters focused on their craft ever more intensely, re-discovering ancient techniques, and inventing new methods of glass-making.
Among contemporary Murano Glass, Fazzoletto designs are some of the most popular, requiring top-level skill, artistry, and experience. In addition, many Fazzoletto glass pieces also feature Millefiori technique. The two methods result in a look of fine mosaics seamlessly fused together to form a kind of a multi-color quilt look. Therefore, only the most distinguished of Murano Glass masters create Fazzoletto vases, bowls, and ceiling lamps, which showcase the bright colors, fine details, and amazing artistic appeal of authentic Murano Glass.
Enjoy this video of Murano Glass Millefiori Fazzoletto Vase making, filmed in a family workshop on Murano island, which we picked for partnership years ago based on their focus on quality, design, craftsmanship, and willingness to evolve with the evolution of design trends, while staying rooted in the ancient traditions and classic characteristics of Murano Glass.
