Glaumbær turf farm in Iceland open-air museum - aerial drone video
Driving Iceland ring road in the direction of Akureyri, in the village of Varmahlíð, you should take the road 75 leading among other things to the museum Glaumbaer (Glaumbær). Skansen was founded as the first on the island, in 1947, the farm was given the status of a protected object and is now under the auspices of the National Museum of Iceland. Since 1952 the farm can be visited. Ideally it shows what life was like Icelanders in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The creation of the farm dates back roughly 874 years, that is since the first settlers, and, peat buildings economic and residential located on the holding arose gradually in the 18th and 19th centuries. The settlers built it mostly with the use of peat, due to limited access to wood material. Buildings performed with thin layers of wood, insulated with thick peat walls. The whole look fit thanks to the Icelandic grass that grows very densely, creating a strong and durable connection of roots and soil.
These types of structures are characterized by relatively short service life in areas with heavy rain - for decades, the situation changes dramatically when the rainfall is relatively low, then the building will last up to 100 years if not more. The slope of the roof, in this case played a significant role. If the roof was too steep, grass did not stop the water and did not grow, contributing to crack turf, and the appearance of holes in the roof. In contrast, when the roof was too flat, the water leaked into the house. Practically it was possible to build large structures ensuring an adequate angle of the roof, hence the division into a number of smaller buildings connected by a corridor. In the case of farms in Glaubaer corridor measures 21 meters and provides access to the 9 houses. Other houses in the complex are mostly business premises access to which settlers were from the outside.
Currently, the museum Glaumbaer consists of several buildings peat and two wooden houses:
Gilsstofa, where you will find the museum offices and a gift shop. His example you can see how they looked salons because this has just been added to the peat houses before the end of the nineteenth century began to build houses out of wood.
Áshús, built in the years 1883 - 1886, adopted today as a café and exhibitions gospodyniach the first decade of the twentieth century.

My small town series are meant to give you an idea about how it is to live in Icelandic small towns, without sounding like a tourist guide. My motto is to show them in different seasons trough drive-around videos, as they are, in every kind of mood and weather there is. Please tolerate with my work since I'm an amateur in film-making but practice makes perfect. My plan is to make a mini-documentaries over all Icelandic towns in the next years so this is far from end result. I use all my free time to record in different seasons, making info-texts and collecting feedback in order to make my material straight to the point with the information travellers seek while planing their trip to my country.

Hofsós - IJsland / Iceland 08-08-2011
Hofsós is one of the oldest trading ports in northern Iceland dating back to the 16th century.
Hofsós, with a population of about 200 individuals, is located 37 km east from Sauðárkrókur.
The economy has been based mainly on the fishing industry as well as services to the neighboring farms. This was largely due to its natural harbor. In recent years Hofsós has built itself up as a tourist attraction and has The Icelandic Emigration Center (Vesturfarasetrið á Hofsósi), dedicated to the westward migration to North America of Icelanders that reached its peak at the turn of the 19th century. The Drangey Exhibition is in Pakkhús, the Hofsós warehouse built in 1777, during the time of the trading monopoly. Massacre hill farm (Mannskaðaholl) at the south end of Lake Höfðavatn, is named for the massacre of English marauders, which took place there in 1431.
