St Patrick's Church & Ancient Friary Glenarm
St Patrick's Church Glenarm, Graveyard and Ancient Friary.
This ancient church is well worth having a look round if you enjoy investigating local religious history.
St Patrick's Church of Ireland
' On 13 December 1759 an official order was issued in Dublin granting permission to build a new Church of Ireland church in Glenarm at the ‘vaults of the old abb[e]y being church ground and contiguous to the town of Glenarm.’ However, it was to be a few more years before building work began. In 1768 a parliamentary report of that year noted ‘a very good new church’ in Glenarm.
The new church is the earliest known example of Strawberry Hill ‘Gothick’ in an ecclesiastical building in Ireland. The church originally had a tower and spire, nave, and an unusual three sided chancel apse. In 1823 a gallery, south transept and vestry were added. In the 1870s the church was renovated under the direction of Lady Antrim and in 1871, she presented it with an organ. In 1878 the porch was added, the gallery removed and a Gothic arch was erected opening the tower into the nave. In 1892 the chancel was extended and a new vestry built.
The church features a fine collection of stained glass windows, including an intriguing single-light window in the south transept.
The friary at Glenarm
In the early fifteenth century, Franciscan Third Order Regular communities began to be established in Ireland. In 1445 the archdeacon of Connor was sent a mandate by Pope Eugenius VI, authorising him to establish a Franciscan Third Order Regular friary in his diocese.
A 1580 map of the County Antrim coastline shows the friary at ‘Glanarme’ on the other side of the river from the castle. It was probably closed by the beginning of the seventeenth century, but its site continued to be the favoured burial place of the local population, including settlers from Scotland.
St Patrick's Graveyard/Churchyard
The friary has been used as a place of burial for centuries, possibly back to its foundation. It was certainly in use in the seventeenth century for the earliest inscription dates from 1641, and there are at least two other memorials bearing dates prior to 1700. Though an act of parliament of 1698 banned burials within the confines of a dissolved monastery, this ruling was ignored by both Protestants and Catholics, and the site of the friary continued as the most important place of interment in Glenarm.

Places to see in ( Cushendall - UK )
Cushendall, formerly known as Newtown Glens, is a desired village and townland in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is located in the historic barony of Glenarm Lower and the civil parish of Layd, and is part of Causeway Coast and Glens district.
It is on the A2 coast road between Glenariff and Cushendun, in the Antrim Coast and Glens Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It lies in the shadow of the table topped Lurigethan Mountain and at the meeting point of three of the Glens of Antrim: Glenaan, Glenballyemon and Glencorp. This part of the Irish coastline is separated from Scotland by the North Channel, with the Mull of Kintyre about 16 miles away. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 1,241 people, with a 2008 estimate of 1,363.
Much of the historic character of the 19th century settlement on the north bank of the River Dall remains. In 1973 it was designated as only the second Conservation Area in Northern Ireland, and includes the largely intact Irish Georgian buildings of the town's four original streets. Since 1990, Cushendall has hosted the Heart Of The Glens festival every August. Thomas D'Arcy McGee, a father of Canadian Confederation, spent his childhood in Cushendall when his father, who worked for the Coast Guard Service, was posted there.
The Curfew Tower in the centre of the village was built by then landlord of the town, Francis Turnley, in 1817, to confine riotous prisoners. Dan McBride, an army pensioner, was given the job of permanent garrison and was armed with one musket, a bayonet, a brace of pistols and a thirteen-feet-long pike. The tower is now owned by artist Bill Drummond.
Oisín's Grave, off the main Cushendall to Ballymoney road, is a megalithic court cairn on a hillside in Lubitavish, near the Glenann River. It is believed to be the burial place of Oísín - the Celtic Warrior Poet. A stone cairn was erected here in 1989 in memory of John Hewitt, the poet of the Glens.
Red Bay Castle, situated between the villages of Cushendall and Waterfoot. Built by the Bisset family in the 14th century and later occupied by the MacDonnells, one of the outposts of the Kingdom of Dál Riata.
Glenariff Forest Park, 5 miles inland from Cushendall, covers an area of 1185 hectares. In the park are two small rivers containing spectacular waterfalls, tranquil pools and stretches of fast flowing water tumbling through rocky gorges. There is a café, toilets and an exhibition centre. Four way-marked trails of varying length (1–9 km) wind through the forest leading you into some of the park's wooded areas. One follows the Glenariff River with its famous waterfalls and passes through the National Nature Reserve.

Places to see in ( Strabane - UK )
Strabane, historically spelt Straban, is a town in West Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It was the headquarters of the former Strabane District Council. Strabane has a population of around 18,000, which is predominantly nationalist.
It is the second-largest town in Tyrone, after Omagh. It lies on the east bank of the River Foyle and is roughly equidistant from Omagh, Derry City and Letterkenny. The River Foyle marks the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. On the other side of the river (across Lifford Bridge) is the smaller town of Lifford, which is the county town of County Donegal. The Mourne flows through the centre of the town, and meets the Finn to form the Foyle River.
In the 20th century, Strabane garnered the dubious distinction of the highest unemployment rate in the Industrial World, during the height of The Troubles. It is one of the most economically deprived towns in the United Kingdom. Huge economic damage occurred in 1987 when much of the town centre flooded.
The Irish gauge 5 ft 3 in (1,600 mm) Londonderry and Enniskillen Railway (L&ER) reached Strabane in 1847, The Finn Valley Railway (FV) opened from Strabane to Stranorlar in 1863.[10][12] The FV was originally Irish gauge but in 1892 it merged with the 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge West Donegal Railway (WD) to form the Donegal Railway.
In 1792, the 4 miles (6.4 km) Strabane Canal was built from the tidal waters of Lough Foyle at Leck, to Strabane. It fell into disuse in 1962. In June 2006 the Strabane Lifford Development Commission awarded a £1.3m cross-border waterways restoration contract. The project was launched by President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, in Lifford and involves the restoration of 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of canal and two locks to working order.
The National Trust owns a Strabane shop in which John Dunlap learnt the printing trade. Dunlap went on to print the United States Declaration of Independence. The house has been visited by several famous people, including former US President Bill Clinton. It is located at the end of the Main Street.Which is now a classic cafe.
Dergalt, the ancestral home of Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States, is near Strabane. Strabane is twinned with Zeulenroda-Triebes in the state of Thuringia, Germany.

Shorthorn - Video Learning - WizScience.com
The Shorthorn breed of cattle originated in the North East of England in the late 18th century. The breed was developed as dual purpose, suitable for both dairy and beef production; however there were always certain blood lines within the breed which emphasised one quality or the other. Over time these different lines diverged and by the second half of the 20th century two separate breeds had developed – the Beef Shorthorn, and the Dairy Shorthorn. All Shorthorn cattle are coloured red, white or roan, although roan cattle are preferred by some, and completely white animals are not common. However, one type of Shorthorn has been bred to be consistently white – the Whitebred Shorthorn, which was developed to cross with black Galloway cattle to produce a popular blue roan crossbreed, the Blue Grey.
The breed developed from Teeswater and Durham cattle found originally in the North East of England. In the late 18th century, the Colling brothers, Charles and Robert, started to improve the Durham cattle using the selective breeding techniques that Robert Bakewell had used successfully on Longhorn cattle. In 1796 the Charles Colling of Ketton Hall, bred the famous Durham Ox. The culmination of this breeding program was the birth of the bull Comet, bred by Charles Colling, in 1804. This bull was subsequently sold for 1,000 guineas in 1810 at the Brafferton sale, the first 1,000 guinea bull ever recorded. Related cattle may have been imported to the United States by Harry Dorsey Gough of Baltimore, Maryland, before 1808.

Mount Stewart House & Garden
Please watch: Carnfunnock Country Park
--~--
Mount Stewart is an 19th-century house and garden in County Down, Northern Ireland, owned by the National Trust. Situated on the east shore of Strangford Lough, a few miles outside the town of Newtownards and near Greyabbey, it was the Irish seat of the Vane-Tempest-Stewart family, Marquesses of Londonderry. The house and its contents reflect the history of the Vane-Tempest-Stewart family, who played a leading role in British and Irish social and political life.
Christmas Cinderella experience and light trail at Blenheim Palace - ad
Christmas is all about magic, and the Blenheim Palace Christmas experience brings magic and fairy stories to life. From the Christmas market in the beautiful courtyard in front of the palace, to the stunningly gorgeous Cinderella themed displays full of luxurious christmas displays inside. Then on to the illuminated outdoor light trail around the grounds, mostly set to music. It might be a bit pricy, but is worth paying to make this part of your christmas traditions.
We visited with press tickets, and were mindblown by the Cinderella experience in the palace. It beats the last 3 years of Waddesdon Manor's Christmas house displays and I thought they were good. We finished with fairground rides after the trail, our christmas spirit not dampened by the rain.
