Castle Espie Wildlife Wetlands, County Down, Northern Ireland

We adore wildlife and nature and love to visit nature parks and wildlife wetlands at any opportunity; Castle Espie Wetlands being such an occasion when we were on holiday in Northern Ireland. Although not on the same grand scale as Slimbridge in Gloucestershire spending the afternoon at the Wetlands made for a great day-out.

The duck pond just inside the entrance was teaming with bird life so we started with a quick sit-down while we feed the ducks and geese and other birds on the pond, and took a few photos. Then we slowly meandered along the paths around Limestone Lake, with views of the various lagoons and the sea beyond, and the salt marshes to one side in the distance.

Then continuing along the path we made our way pass the old Castle Espie Brickworks, down into the woods, through the pine forest to the swamp and then back around to the duck pond by the entrance where we had one final sit-down to feed the birds before making our way back to our holiday cottage above the bay in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains.

Glenarm - Glens Of Antrim

Lying about 12 miles north of Larne it is the most southerly of the Nine Glens of Antrim. The village of Glenarm has a population of about 500 people with perhaps 600-700 in the upper glen. There was an important fort here in Norman times providing an outlet to the sea for the extensive Norman settlement in mid-Antrim. The harbour has recently been renovated and a new marina created with moorings for some 75 boats.

Glenarm Castle, dating from 1750 with early 19th century alterations lies near the village and the Antrim Estate extends up the Glen for about four miles on both sides of the river. The Church of Ireland stands on the site of a Third Order Franciscan Friary founded about AD 1500 with part of the walls still visible. The great Shane O'Neill, killed at Cushendun in 1567 is reputed to be buried here, minus his head which was displayed on a spike at Dublin Castle.
