Allan Ward video of the Monklands Ramblers - monklandsramblers.org.uk
Hello, these are the home pages of the Monklands Ramblers Club, one of the largest R.A. clubs in Scotland, and the first Scottish R.A. club on the Internet! We are based in the Monklands area of Central Scotland in North Lanarkshire, some 12 miles east of Glasgow. The two major towns in the area are Airdrie and Coatbridge, and it is from these towns that the majority of our 150+ members come from. There are also a significant number of members from other areas of Lanarkshire, in particular, Hamilton and Blantyre.
The club was formed in the summer of 1985 by a few local people who were interested in hill-walking. At that time the walks were fairly informally organised and people travelled to the walks in cars. Nowadays we are organised into a proper club with a full elected committee. Our members consist of people from all walks of life ranging in age from 20 - 75. We run a 53 seater coach or minibus to all of our walks (which are always covered beforehand by the leaders), we have walks programmes which cover Scotland and northern England and cater for all levels of fitness, and we occasionally go as far afield as Austria for special one-off walking holidays. Monklands Ramblers also has a very active social scene with regular dances, quiz nights and ten-pin bowling outings organised by the committee.
The club has actively and successfully campaigned for rights of way to be maintained and enhanced in the North Lanarkshire area. We have also become very much a part of the local community with frequent acknowledgement of our activities in the local press. The club is extremely successful simply because of the effort and support shown by the members. We consider ourselves a friendly bunch of people who always have a great time irrespective of the unpredictable Scottish weather! We would also be delighted to welcome along any new walkers who may be considering joining us - so come on, contact us today!
Argyll Journeys Episode 1 - Kentallen, Port Appin, Easdale and Bealach na Gaoithe
Argyll is a fascinating place to visit, with many options for cycling and walking trips, and the chance to visit unique events as well. In the first episode of Argyll Journeys I travel on my bike along the shore of Loch Linnhe from Kentallen to Port Appin on the Caledonia Way, an iconic 237-mile route from Campbeltown to Inverness. Afterwards I visit the World Stone Skimming Championships and enjoy the terrific views on Easdale, before cycling a short section of the Wild About Argyll Trail over the Bealach na Gaoithe.

The Aonach Eagach Ridge
The weather has been fantastic for a number of weeks and today was no different. The car thermometer registered 28 degrees as I parked up – it was going to be hot! I headed off gingerly and slowly around 17.30, mainly due to the large amount of gear but also knowing there was no rush! I met a few scramblers who were sun beaten and on the final leg of their day and the smiles on their faces said it all really
A little later and I popped out on the summit of Am Bodach and was greeted by the inhabitants, hungry for their tea! A little scouting about and I was lucky to find a cracking spot with the Chancellor below me that was offering a fine light breeze, enough to make the local blood suckers look elsewhere for their tea ;)
A quick pitch and then some tea. The views were amazing as always in Glencoe. The Bidean Massif looked very grand and had me thinking that the Massif is perhaps the most impressive mountain in the UK? May be I have been guilty of taking it for granted due to its accessibility but from this viewpoint it was looking immense!
I had tea and took some photos and watched the sunset- then bed…… It had been eight years since I’d last done the ridge, I spent some time thinking how I would find it in the morning with a tired mind and body! Not to worry the adrenaline was pumping when I woke at 03.30 and it really had not gotten dark at all. I notice maybe two stars above Bidean as I peered out during my doze! By 04.10 I was off and immediately descending Am Bodach – concentration required but no real difficulties… Then the fabulous walk to Meall Dearg with the sun rising behind me… The camp and early start meant I had the Ridge to myself and I lingered on the Munro watching the sun get higher and lighting up the Ridge that was rolling out before me…
Onwards I went – the scrambling becoming a little more sustained until I reached the Pinnacles. What a cracking location and scramble. Care required but again no real difficulties in this fabulous weather…. A little further until the scrambling ended on Stob Coire Beath then I about turned and reversed the route, again no one to be seen and I reached my tent around 0700. A quick strike and I set off back down – taking the Corrie route down which was a little less demanding with my big bag on. The sun was beating down and the streams made a grand refreshment stop.
Back at the car well before 0900 and early home. An amazing adventure. It’s amazing what you can pack into a short period of time The Ridge P.S. Not leaving it another 8 years!Music from Bensound.com

About the mountains:
The mountains of Glencoe are built from some of the oldest sedimentary and volcanic strata in the world. They were subsequently moulded, sheared and repositioned by a geological event known as a ‘cauldron subsidence’ which took place 380 million years ago...

Scottish ski resort closes after fire rips through wooden restaurant building
A popular Scottish ski resort is set to remain closed on Boxing Day after a fire gutted its restaurant, leaving several accommodation blocks without power.
Bosses at Glencoe mountain resort say they are shutting down the facility until at least Friday, December 27 after a blaze almost completely destroyed their base station eatery.
It is understood eight fire crews battled the flames overnight, however the wooden structure was devastated during the incident and it is now set to close over the next few days so work to repair it can be carried out.
The cafe is a popular spot for those taking part in winter sports activities and offers an impressive panoramic view of Buachaille Etive Mor.
A statement posted on Facebook by the resort read: At 2am last night the Base Station Building at the resort caught fire and despite the very best efforts of 6 fire crews was almost completely destroyed.
Image: Facebook.com/GlencoeMountainResort
This means the centre will be completely closed to the public tomorrow 26th Dec while we make the structure of the building safe. All ski lessons for tomorrow are cancelled and accommodation bookings for the 26th Dec are also cancelled as we currently have no power to the lodges (we will be working over the next few days to remedy this).
All our comms are also currently down so apologies if we are difficult to get hold of over the next few days.
It continued: We hope to be able to re-open for skiing, snowboarding and sledging (weather permitting) on the 27th Dec. Updates to follow tomorrow.
Thank you for all your messages and offers of support, they are massively appreciated by us all.
