Glencolmcille Folk Village Donegal
The Folk Village Museum is a cluster of several small cottages, called a ‘clachan’, perched on a hillside overlooking the sandy curve of Glen Bay Beach in the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking area) of South West Donegal. Designed, built and maintained by the local people, the Folk Village is one of Ireland's best living-history museums.

Glencolmcille is a Gaeltacht coastal parish along the Wild Atlantic Way.
Glencolmcille is nestled on the south west of coast of Co. Donegal.

At the Folk Village you can relive Irish life going back to the 1700's ,1800's and 1900's in our traditional thatched cottage museum and historical trail. Our Folk Village is a champion for local hand crafts and the views from our nature walk out over the Atlantic are breath taking. The Folk Village Tea House is world famous for it's food and charm and we can boast a fine relationship with major tour and cruise companies.

Within a five mile radius you can climb world class sea stacks (Unique ascent), cycle through 5,000 years of history (Ireland by bike ) or learn our native Irish Language at Oideas Gael. Why not take the world famous boat trip with Sliabh Liag Boat trips. Il s'agit d'une reconstitution d'un petit village typiquement irlandais des siècles derniers qui démontre le quotidien des gens de l'époque comme le travail agricole ainsi que les tâches ménagères.
Les maisons du village ont des toits de chaume et sont une réplique exacte des habitations de la période s'échelonnant du XVIIIe siècle jusqu'au XXe siècle.
Il est utile de préciser que nous ne sommes pas entrés sur le site. Nous nous sommes plutôt dirigés de l'autre côté de la rue, face au village, où se trouve une superbe plage.
Un sentier y a été aménagé et la randonnée est très agréable dans ce secteur car le panorama est vraiment exceptionnel.

Nationwide in Glencolmcille Folk Village
Nationwide in Glencolmcille for the 50th anniversary of the opening of the folk village aired on RTE 1 January 12th 2018.
Turas Glencolmcille
Gleann Cholm Cille is a beautiful valley in the west of Donegal, along the Wild Atlantic Way. This Irish-speaking area has a strong traditional link with St. Colmcille, the Glen is named after him.
In Gleann Cholm Cille, the Slí Cholmcille follows the route of the Turas Cholmcille. The Turas - translated as the journey - is part of a strong Christian pilgrimage tradition in Ireland.
The Turas links a number of ancient stones some of which date back to 3000BC. The standing stones which form the core of the Turas probably date from 500-700AD.
The Turas Cholmcille is performed between the eve of 9th June - the Saint’s Feast Day - and 15th August – Feast of the Assumption, a major festival in Irish folklife.

The Dooey Hostel in Glencolmcille
We stayed in this awesome hostel during our small road trip in Ireland. The hostel is partially build into the rock. It's all just rocks and water, as the hostel owner said, but the surroundings are beautiful.

Glencolmcille residents left shocked
Glencolmcille residents left shocked by a €220,000 bill for a new sewerage system at their community-run folk village The Glen.
Work has begun on the new system but the folk village has been left out of the plans.

Glencolmcille is an Irish speaking community located in County Donegal and it is also home to the Folk Village Museum historical cottages. One hidden part of this part of the country is the amazing cliff views it has to offer.
I had to park my car down at the bottom and follow the trail up however it was 100% worth it for the views on show. I could see down on the village itself and even look out to sea as it was clear. Below the cliffs there were many rocks and crystal blue water.

The Glen Folk Village is a cluster of several small cottages, called a ‘clachan’, perched on a hillside overlooking the sandy curve of Glen Bay Beach in the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking area) of South West Donegal. Designed, built and maintained by the local people, the Folk Village is one of Ireland's best living-history museums.
Each cottage is an exact replica of a dwelling used by the local people in each of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries and is equipped with the furniture, artifacts and utensils of its particular period. A reconstructed school house, fisherman’s dwelling and tiny pub-grocer offer additional insights into rural Irish life in one of the most remote corners of the country.
Visitors may wander at leisure through the Village, or join one of their excellent guided tours. Take a look at how our ancestors lived, cooked, the beds they lay on, the tools they used, their means of lighting and heat. Learn how they developed rich traditions in music, dance and crafts despite the material hardships of daily life.
