GlenDale Mill - Glendale, South Carolina - Spartanburg County
Location: Glendale, South Carolina - Spartanburg County.
Dr. James C. Bivings moved to the area in 1832 from Lincolnton, NC. He built the largest cotton mill in the area and his house overlooking his Bivingsville Cotton Factory. He went into partnership with Simpson Bobo and Elias C. Leitner. Not long after their partnership there was a dispute between partners and Dr. Bivings left. By 1847 the partners were E.C. and G. Leitner but the mill was still called Bivingsville Cotton Factory. It wasn't until 1878 the mill village name was changed from Bivingsville to Glendale. In 1856 it was sold in bankruptcy and one of the purchasing investors was Dexter E. Converse. He became the mill Manager/President and he lived in the Bivings house. The mill made cotton cloth for the Confederacy during the Civil War. After the War, Converse and Albert Twitchell bought the mill. In 1899 Converse died and Albert Twitchell became president. The Converse family sold the mill in 1946 to J.L. Stifel & Sons. The mill village boasted about 120 houses and these were sold in the mid 1950's. In 1956 it employed 600 people. In 1957 it was sold to Indian Head Mill. It closed in 1961 and burned down on March 24th, 2004. This is what it looks like today April 4th, 2017.

Lawson's Fork Creek
A foreboding put in at the start of a fun but hair-raising solo paddle down Lawson's Fork Creek in Spartanburg County, SC. This was my first time down this section and it did not disappoint thanks to high and fast water. There were several more trees and rough water sections than I expected, so I ended up doing quite a bit of portaging through tick and spider infested bramble. Beautiful scenery and I had it all to myself. Good times!
