Music (Song about Ned Kelly's horse at the siege of Glenrowan)

The Somnambulist
‘Music’ was the name of the grey mare who the famous Australian bush-ranger Ned Kelly rode at the siege of Glenrowan. The horse belonged to fellow Kelly gang member Joe Bryne, but it was Ned who rode her during the final fight against police. Kelly was used to riding Music and admired her greatly, and soon after the police laid siege to Glenrowan, he rode her to turn back Kelly gang supporters who had been wrongly summoned by mis-fired signal rockets. After Joe Byrne was killed, Ned Kelly returned to the Glenrowan Inn. He stumbled wounded through the early morning mist, appearing like the mythical bunyip in armour and terrifying the many assembled police. Despite his grave wounds, Kelly attacked 34 police in an effort to break the siege and free his brother Dan and Steve Hart.
Music, saddled and bridled, loyally followed Ned during the early stages of the shoot-out. When Ned fell, Music stood firm beside him. Dr Nicholson of Benalla commented; ‘We finally expected to see him make a rush and mount it, but he allowed it to pass’. Perhaps Ned was reluctant to make Music a target of the police guns. They shot her anyway, twice. Constable Moore fired the shots. Both Kelly and Music regained their feet and as the police poured a withering fire into ned’s unprotected legs, Music escaped the battle-field.
Rumours circulated that a ghostly apparition of the grey mare was seen for a long time in the Wombat ranges after the siege, but, in actual fact, Kelly supporters appear to have rescued her and later, she appeared in the ‘Kelly show’, which Kate and Jim Kelly took to Sydney town after the deaths of their two brothers at Glenrowan.
In a post-script to a letter sent to his parents in Scotland by Donald Gray Sutherland, (dated 8 July 1880), we learn more about the mysterious mare ‘Music’ and her bond with Ned Kelly. Sutherland sailed to Australia in 1876 at the age of 24. He travelled to Glenrowan after the shoot-out. In the letter Sutherland even enclosed a lock of Music’s hair. He wrote;
‘The hair enclosed is from the tail of Ned Kelly the famous murderer and bushranger’s mare. His favourite mare who followed him all around the trees during the firing. He said he wouldn’t care for himself if he thought his mare safe’.
This song is Rob Bruce’s second musical retelling of the siege of Glenrowan, the other being ‘Such Is Life’ from his long play album ‘Paint the Pony’. Bruce, like many Australians, regards Kelly and his fellow gang members as folk heroes. The horse in this You Tube clip is also named Music, though ‘Misty Music’ is her full name’. She was given as a gift by Rob Bruce to his partner Ulrike Kraft, who keeps her in Nimbin NSW. Misty is an 11 year old pure Percheron French heavy draft, and is the lead mare in her heard of seven. Rob Bruce snapped this image of Music in the early morning mist in Nimbin NSW.
Music
Oh Music, sweet Music
Lift me up and carry me
Far from all this clamour and strife
For I am weary now, of sorrow, of life
Oh Music, sweet Music
My sight grows dim, it’s hard to see
Lift me high above all this trouble
And together we’ll ride into immortality
Like a drum you carry me
Far beyond all this misery
Into the pure light of eternity
Can’t you hear their thunder?
Have you no fear?
Go now girl for I am finished
Go fast away from here
I saw a grey mare
A ghost moving through the mist and smoke
I heard Music somewhere close
It was a dream, a spell, the spell broke
I awoke to the roar of thunder
The cries of battle, the sting of lead
Yes, now I’ve got my gruel, but you will remember me
Ned Kelly, son of Red
That’s enough, trooper, I’ve got my gruel
Now let me be
Rest now, my boys
There is peace, finally
And soon I’ll ride my spirit horse
Through the land of shadows to a place I know
And I will see you there, my judge
Where I go
Yes, I will see you there my judge
Where I go

Melbourne to Bright via Ned Kelly in Glenrowan
We were looking for a place to go not far from Melbourne for a weekend away. We had heard about how beautiful Bright is any time of the year and decided that it sounded like the perfect place to go for a couple of nights. We checked out the available camping site options for putting up a tent and close to town. We booked 2 nights in the Bright caravan park the week before.
Bright, Victoria is just over 3 hours drive from Melbourne, 7 hours drive from Sydney, 5 hours drive from Canberra and 12 hours drive from Adelaide. Bright is situated on the Great Alpine Road (B 500) about 75 kms from the Hume Highway (M31) which is the main road connecting Melbourne to Sydney.
We stopped in Glenrowan and had a look around and took some photos of the big Ned Kelly sculpture standing in the street.
After putting up the tent in Bright and then headed to the nearby Bright Brewery for a sampler of their beer.

Dramatic Letter Details Australian Outlaw Ned Kelly's Capture
A 133-year-old letter has given the first civilian account of the capture of Ned Kelly, Australia's most famous outlaw, and will go on public display for the first time next week.
A young bank teller named Donald Sutherland witnessed Kelly being captured and, in the letter to his parents in Scotland, detailed the shootout with police on June 28, 1880, that ended a stand-off known as the Glenrowan Siege.
The home-made armour and helmet Kelly wore during the battle helped make him an iconic figure in Australian history.
Ned's armour alone weighed 97 pounds. The police thought he was a fiend seeing their rifle bullets were sliding off him like hail, Sutherland wrote.
The force of the rifle bullets made him stagger when hit but it was only when they got him on the legs and arms that he reluctantly fell, exclaiming as he did so 'I am done. I am done'.
Alex McDermott, a research scholar at the State Library of Victoria, said the Glenrowan Siege had been heavily scrutinised in the past century but the letter was the first time the events had been represented from an unbiased and everyman perspective.
What we have here is an everyday bank teller from Oxley, a little town near Glenrowan. And he's not on the side of the Kellys massively so, and he's not on the side of the police massively so. It's that shining of a light of sort of everyday, ordinary reality into one of these very black and white, iconic moments in Australian history, that to me is the real power of this letter by Sutherland, McDermott said.
The Kelly Gang was outlawed after they killed three policemen and robbed several banks. They became a symbol of social tensions between poor Irish settlers and the wealthy establishment, with Kelly becoming a folk hero to many for standing up to the Anglo-Australian ruling class.
He was lying on a stretcher quite calm and collected, notwithstanding the great pain he must have been suffering from his wounds, Sutherland wrote, noting that Kelly was comforted by his sobbing sisters after being captured.
The letter passed to Sutherland's descendants in Scotland, England and Canada before the family decided to donate it to the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne, where it will be on view from Monday (Oct 14).
Ned Kelly was hanged for his crimes in 1880. His remains were finally laid to rest in January this year after being exhumed from a mass prison grave.

The Glenrowan Affair (1951)
The Glenrowan Affair features the bushranging exploits of Ned Kelly and his ‘wild colonial boys’ on their journey of treachery, violence, murder and terror. Told from the perspective of an aging Dan Kelly in present day Benalla, Kathner presents the narrative as a factual retelling despite his obvious embellishment of the Kelly myth. The production of the film generated more controversy than the film itself due to creative fallouts between Kathner and the film’s original director, Harry Southwell (The Kelly Gang 1920, When the Kelly’s Were Out 1923, When the Kelly’s Rode 1934) and the casting of local football hero, Bob Chitty as Ned Kelly. Bob Chitty was famed and feared as one of the toughest men ever to play Australian Rules football. The Carlton strongman was cast as Ned Kelly in this movie by Rupert Kathner, which was narrated by popular actor Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell. The project was ambitious, but critics were not kind.
