Walks in England: Exploring Gloucester Cathedral
Gloucester Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of St Peter and the Holy and Indivisible Trinity, in Gloucester, England, stands in the north of the city near the River Severn. It originated in 678 or 679 with the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter (dissolved by Henry VIII).
Today I am exploring the abbey with the help of Mark Garner, volunteer at the abbey.
A Christian place of worship had stood on the abbey site since Anglo-Saxon times. Benedictine rule was introduced about 1022 and the abbey dedicated to St Peter. [1] The fraternity was invigorated when King William I appointed the energetic Norman monk Serlo to be the abbot. Serlo built the impressive abbey Church of St Peter.

The Day We Went to Gloucester Cathedral. England, UK.
After taking Izzy to get some professional headshots done, in a hope to kickstart her acting career, we head off to Newport Rail Station to meet the invisible boyfriend, and from there we drive to Gloucester Cathedral. We discovered it to be enormous, amazing, and well worth a visit!
Izzy was particularly interested in this one, as it is one of the Harry Potter filming locations. I show you around the cloisters, where this famous filming took place.

I'm Imo and she's Izzy. We love getting out and about and exploring South Wales and beyond.
We're a home-schooling/home-educating family of two based in the UK dealing with the daily challenges of managing Izzy's severe, chronic eczema and her education. Our resourcefulness is tested on a daily basis but we'd love to share our little triumphs and discoveries with you as we go along.
I will always write closed captions in UK English for my vlogs, not only to make them more accessible in general but also to create a useful resource for advanced learners of the English language who may enjoy regular bursts of pseudo-immersion in English in a narrative context with the additional benefit of corresponding on-screen text.
These videos will not generally feature background music, making them extra suitable for people who aren't keen on pop music! x

Title: The Day We Went to Gloucester Cathedral.
Gloucester Cathedral Visit
As per the title, a visit to Gloucester Cathedral. If you have never seen it it is magnificent in its splendour. For years it has been undergoing restoration, as you might expect from a building over a thousand years old, and although the work is ongoing, the western three quarters is done and stands in all its glory bereft of scaffolding. The surrounding courtyard has recently been redeveloped as a public space and now perfectly complements the Cathedral building with an air of quiet calm.
On the inside all religious buildings have an aurora, but few will better this one with its huge columns and fan vaulted ceilings and a sense of vastness as it is difficult to see from one end to the other. Burial place of kings (well one), there are the usual side chapels as you would expect, one of the best east windows in Europe, and so much to catch the eye. The west window is not bad either. The choir stalls are a work of art, a celebration of the skill of the carpenter, but the cloisters take fan vaulting to a new level, the intricacies of which reflect the presence of master masons in every stone. Never the less what you will probably take from the cloisters is the sense of peace which is as intended.
Gloucester Cathedral
The beautiful cathedral at Gloucester, is best known for being both the burial site of King Edward II, and a filming location (the cloisters) for the Harry Potter movies.

Gloucester, South West England, Gloucestershire UK TRAVEL VIDEO
The origins of the name Gloucester can be traced to Caerloyw in the modern Welsh.
The city is located on the eastern bank of the River Severn, sheltered by the Cotswolds to the east, while the Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills rise to the west and north, respectively. Gloucester is a port, linked via the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal which runs from Gloucester's docks to the Severn Estuary, allowing larger ships to reach the docks than would be possible on the tidal reaches of the river itself, which go well north of the city to Haw Bridge.
The Tomb of King Edward II in Gloucester Cathedral
King Edward II reigned as king of England from 1307 to 1327. He was deposed from the throne by his wife and imprisoned. He is reputed to have been murdered by having a red hot poker inserted inside him.
