10. Narrowboat Gloucester & Sharpness Canal & Railway Disaster
We've navigated to the end of the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal to the Sharpness Docks. I discover what's at the end of the canal and see the remains of the Severn Railway Bridge devastated in the 1960's by barges crashing into it's supporting columns. I walk along the longest village green in England, which is a true example of picture postcard English village. I also discuss the bad sides of the canal including the bobbing up and down and the rude rowers.

Sharpness Canal & Ship's Graveyard River Severn Gloucestershire UK
This is one of my favourite walks along the canal. Today the weather was so calm, no wind or breeze. It was perfect. I walked along to the Hulks or the Ships Graveyard. find out more here
I could see the little train over on the other shore, I really want to go on that train.
84. Huge Abandoned Boat Graveyard Gloucester & Sharpness Canal
I start my journey up the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal. I pass Purton where there is the largest collection of abandoned and beached boats in Britain. Speeding Cruiser Boats and summer cruising along this wide and deep canal.

Gloucester and Sharpness Canal - Full Length Walk
Travel the full length of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal via this video. For much of its 16.5 mile length it runs close to the tidal River Severn, but cuts off a significant loop in the river, at a once-dangerous bend near Arlingham. Also featuring Purton hulks (ships graveyard) along with in depth features at Sharpness & Gloucester Docks.

BUCS HEAD Long Course - Gloucester Canal 2019
A preview video for those new to the Gloucester Canal BUCS Head course. We look forward to welcoming you to the South West of England for this years BUCS Head race.
[NB video taken during training session on the Canal, use video to familiarise yourself with the course, the line followed isn't necessarily the optimal]
Helpful Tips:
- short course (Novice) start is pointed out in the video, but look at BUCS Website for Short Course details which differ from Long Course (especially through Sellars Bridge)
- there is no stream on the canal
- overtaking crews need to go around (different to usual race rules) on port side
- it’s a narrow river, be careful where you overtake or you could get caught out
- the 'big bend' near the finish is tighter than you think it is
- we're trying out this format this year, please listen to marshals and officials to help it run as smoothly as possible
Go to BUCS Website for full rules of racing:
