Getting from Holbox from Cancun on the bus

Just a short 5 hour journey from touristy Cancun to Isla Holbox.... the bus is dirt cheap..but slow.

Taking a taxi from Cancun to Holbox Island, or Isla Holbox for you Spanish Speakers

Taxi cabs get paid on the trip, not the time..so he apparently thought we could go as fast as possible.

If you check tours online NEVER EVER pay in advance pleaseeee same for transportation. Wait until you get there.

Go to Merida toll road then find the exit to Chiquila 2 - 2-1/2 hrs you could also take the free road to Chiquila the street is in great conditions but is only one way in each direction.
To come back pay the shuttle at Holbox get the best price downtown Holbox most of the agencies charge $380 pesos

HOLBOX ISLAND:

Located to the northwest of Cancun, Mexico, Holbox Island is just 26 miles / 42 km long. Holbox Island is separated from the mainland coast of Mexico by a shallow lagoon which gives sanctuary to thousands of flamingos, pelicans and other exotic birds and creatures.

Most of the people of Holbox Island make their living fishing. It is common to see fishermen walking through Holbox Village with their catch of the day or carrying their nets. The streets of Holbox Island are made of white sand, common of Caribbean islands, and there are very few cars. Holbox Island is considered a virgin tourist destination because very few outsiders visit the island. In spite of Holbox' natural beauty, inaccessibility has left it unspoiled by mass tourism. I went on a girl’s trip with my sister for her birthday to Isla Holbox! This truly is one of Mexico's best kept secrets! Check out how we got there...although simple enough, you still need a plan!

Holbox (black hole in Yucatec Maya) is an island in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. It is approximately 41.84 kilometres (26.00 miles) long and 1.5 kilometres (0.9 miles) wide, and it is separated from the mainland by 10 km of shallow lagoonthat is home to flamingos, pelicans and other rich birdlife. Holbox Island is part of the Municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas and also part of the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve.
The island is accessed by ferry from the mainland town of Chiquila,[4] and has virtually no cars, with transport by most residents and tourists by golf cart or moped. A small airline, Flights Holbox , Aerosaab, flies tours to Holbox from Cancún and Playa del Carmen; there is even a small airstrip to accommodate five-seater, 13 seater Cessna aircraft.

Mexico is really well connected with the ADO busses and various ferries to reach the islands, but the reality of travel anywhere (regardless of Mexican adventures or not) is things rarely actually go smoothly. This Mexican travel day in particular, from Tulum to Holbox island also known as Isla Holbox, had a few more hiccups than normal but it's all part of the adventure!

Tulum has been an interesting place to explore, but it's time we reach some islands and relax a bit more away from the chaos... enter Holbox! Isla Holbox is AMAZING! We can't wait to share more about this little paradise soon.

Planes, boats, and automobiles....That's what it takes to get to Isla Mujeres, MX, from California. And it's worth it! When researching this voyage, I came to the conclusion it mighta be nice to shoot a vid that shows what it looks like. I traveled from LAX to the island in 2018, and other than a soul-crushing hour-plus line at Mexico customs, it went as well as one could hope for.
