Montañita Beach Life - a documentary film
For several decades, Montañita - a beach town in Ecuador - had been a little-heard-of destination known only by surfers and off-the-beaten-path travellers. But whoever passed through it was left with indelible memories. The town has a unique vibe that is palpable as soon as you enter. You see everyone at ease, smiling, eager to make friends and have fun. Whoever you are, wherever you come from - you can't but dive into this vibe and become like one of these chilled beach bums. The place is addictive and that is because happiness is addictive. So a word of warning - do not make firm plans for your return, because most visitors overstay and some never leave.
In the recent years, however, Montañita has experienced a lot of exposure and growth. As is often the case, this development has brought a host of challenges that threaten to destroy the unique character of the town. So a question arises. As Montañita becomes big and successful, will it retain its special vibe? Or will its magic be broken?
Here's the official page for the film

Entry Title: Seaside living - Montanita, Ecuador
Entry:
We arrived here in Montañita, after another long day of travel, on the last day of April. From San Cristobol Island in the Galapagos we flew into the big city of Guayaquil (pop. 2.5 million) on mainland Ecuador, and immediately we had to make an emergency visit to a local private clinica (hospital) for an eye examination. Deb was having some troubling vision problems in one of her recently operated on eyes, and there was a strong possibility that her retina could have become detached. At the Guayaquil airport we were incredibly fortunate to meet a wonderful local woman named Maura Abad who volunteered to guide us to the Kennedy Hospital and through the challenging maze of mostly Spanish-speaking Ecuadorians. We had our driver, who was scheduled to take us to our next destination, instead take us (along with our good Samaritan friend) directly to see the hospital ophthalmologist (who spoke excellent English), and his prognosis was good. There was no retina detachment, but rather a vitreous detachment, which causes continuous floaters and occasional bright flashes in the eye. This condition is not uncommon in near-sighted people over the age of 45, and should need no further treatment. Once we got the doctor´s okay, we bid farewell to our nueva amiga, St. Maura (literally a God-send) and had our driver continue on to the beach - vamos a la playa! Two and a half hours later, and in the dark of night, we made it to our next home - Casa del Sol, in the beach town of Montañita, exhausted and muy humbre (very hungry). We ate a quick meal and immediately headed-off to bed, where we passed out in our somewhat shabby and rundown surfer resort hotel room. The following morning we relocated a few minutes down the beach to a real seaside resort, the beautiful Hotel Baja Montañita, easily the nicest and cleanest hotel in town. We are now livin´ in luxury. Our new hotel has a huge swimming pool, dozens of comfy lounge chairs, several seaside bars, and a muy feliz (very happy) and friendly staff. The hotel manager Marco has been especially kind and has extended some genuine Ecuadorian hospitality and kindness our way. Deb has had an opportunity to relax and rest the eye, and Stevo has had a few chances to surf the fine point-break that sits directly in front of the hotel. After the non-stop excitement in the Galapagos it feels like time has slowed, and now we are feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. As for the town of Montañita, which is about a 10-minute walk down the beach from our hotel, well let´s just say that there is a very youthful vibe that permeates the scene. In fact, it´s more shantytown and hippie-ville than even we care for, which basically means that it´s not a great hangout or vacation spot for anyone over the age of 25. We´re talkin´ real vagabond-ville ... with shack-like bars, faded storefronts, and a generally rustic overall appearance. None the less, Montañita has an extreme party atmosphere and the upcoming full-moon party will be an all night affair. However, by the time the festivities begin we will be long gone and entering the next leg of our journey into Peru and to Machu Piccu. Since we have no real needs in town, and our lovely, groovin´ hotel has 2 excellent chefs on staff (along with such fine amenities as free high-speed internet), we will continue to lounge, swim, and surf the remainder of our time away here on the far end of the long stretch of sand at the point just north of Montañita. Stay tuned for more Grateful Globetrotting ...

Cerro de Carmen - Guayaquil, Ecuador
David's Been Here is touring the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil, where David pays a visit to the area's highest point: Cerro de Carmen. Climb the steps to this massive overlook, with some of the most breathtaking views out over the city below. With a giant statue of Jesus Christ up top and some great birdwatching as well- a trip to the Cerro de Carmen is certainly worth the visit for everyone touring the city of Guayaquil. For more information on this and all the main sites of the area, check out the David's Been Here Guide to Guayaquil, now available for your Kindle as well.
