San Juan, Puerto Rico - Solo Travel Information and Advice
I forgot to talk about UBER, the Catãna Ferry (which is only 50 cents each way) and the Bacardi Experience. Use the ferry and take an UBER back to the airport to save yourself a few bucks! Yes, you can take an UBER to the airport. You just can’t take one from the airport. The UBER drivers are excellent in PR but highly detested by taxis because like Mexico and similar countries they do not pay all the ordinance fees like taxis do!

Taxi drive in to San Juan, from the Airport. Headed towards the port for a Carnival Cruise. I think the fare was about $30. Carnival charges more.

San Juan, Puerto Rico Cruise Port Guide: Tips and Overview
Founded in 1521 by Ponce De Leon, San Juan Puerto Rico has two cruise terminals. Our guide focuses on the terminal in Old San Juan.
In addition to being the Capital of Puerto Rico and the oldest city in the US Territory, San Juan is known for its cobblestone streets, 16th century walls and fortresses, colorful architecture, expansive views of the water, and Bacardi Rum, all of which can be reached from the Old San Juan cruise terminal for little or no cost.

Taxi Cabs Protest Uber and Block Traffic in Puerto Rico

Check out the website:
In Puerto Rico on vacation and we started to see there is some major conflict between Uber and the Taxi union here. First, our resort wouldn't allow our Uber to pick us up on the property. Then, in a second Uber, we couldn't go to Old San Juan because the taxi drivers had blocked all traffic in and out of Old San Juan. Traffic was at a stand still.

TRAVELING TO PUERTO RICO
With it being only a two-and-a-half hour flight from Miami, you could potentially go even for a long weekend. Flights can be anywhere from $200 – $500 round trip depending on what part of the States you are traveling from.
It’s easy to take a taxi from the airport; it will cost between $15-25 depending on how many are in your party and how many bags you have. They do have Uber in the San Juan area and while it will show that you can request an Uber from the airport, you cannot.
WHERE TO STAY IN SAN JUAN
There are many options when asking the question, where to stay in San Juan. If it is your first time in San Juan, stay in Old San Juan. There’s a good amount of boutique hotels and a few chain hotels to choose from in many of the touristy areas. However, we prefer the Airbnb route because we like the feel of living like locals. Renting an Airbnb in Old San Juan is the answer when asking where to stay in San Juan.
TOP THINGS TO DO IN PUERTO RICO
-Forts of Old San Juan
Put your walking shoes on and spend a few hours walking around the forts of Old San Juan. Built in the 1500s, these forts of Old San Juan were primarily used to keep out invading countries and pirates.
-La Perla Puerto Rico
If you’re into photography you cannot pass up the photo opportunities provided by La Perla in Puerto Rico. It sits just feet from the ocean and at the foot of one of the forts of Old San Juan. La Perla is a gem regardless of it not being an upscale neighborhood.
It was put in the spotlight recently by the well-known music video for Despacito.
-Bacardi Factory
Well worth a few hours of your day. Only a 5-10 minute ferry ride at $3 round trip. There are a few options of different tours to choose from. Each of them come with a welcome drink at the very least. You can go the less expensive route and just do the historic tour for $15, you can do a tasting tour for $50, or go all out and learn new bartending skills as you do a tasting tour for $60.
-Calle Fortelaza
It would be hard not to find yourself aimless walking around the streets of Old San Juan simply admiring the character of all the buildings. One street to make sure you get a look at is Calle Fortelaza. At the farthest west end of the street sits the Governors residence (or fortress as it is named). Right before the road ends is a net of kites that add even more unique personality to the already beautiful and historic scene.

-Barrachina: Great Puerto Rican bites in a classy atmosphere! They’re popular so either book in advance or have a drink at the bar while you wait.
-Punto de Vista Rooftop: Views! This place has some of the best views that we’ve seen at any restaurants in San Juan. They are located at the top of Hotel Milano and serve the best Mofongo. Get there early.
-El Picoteo: Perfect for a date night or day-time tapas. It’s mostly outside in a courtyard ambiance. A little pricier but definitely a treat.

10 Things Not to Do in Puerto Rico
Get more Tips here!
From its towering mountains to its world class beaches and everywhere in between, Puerto Rico is a welcoming tropical destination but there are certainly 10 Things NOT to do there.
1. Don’t Expect Everyone to Speak English
Spanish is the primary language. In resorts you shouldn’t have a problem, but when you’re visiting the cities and towns, you’ll likely run across a lot of people who don’t speak English, so it’s a good idea to learn a few basic Spanish phrases.
2. Don’t Where Flashy Jewelry
There is an element of crime in the area. In highly trafficked tourist areas, the chances of being hit by violent crime rises; that said. Don’t flash your valuables around in public, and make sure to steer clear of tourist areas at night.
3. Don’t Speak Ill of Puerto Rican Statehood
The people and government of Puerto Rico have invested a lot of time, effort, and passion into making the argument that they should be properly folded into the Union. So, if the topic comes up, just say you support statehood or change the subject.
4. Don’t Be Afraid of Puerto Ricans
By and large, the Puerto Rican people have an international reputation for being very warm and open. Don’t get into cars with strangers or anything, but you shouldn’t feel shy about striking up a conversation with a local. They’re cool, and you just might gain a new perspective on things.
5. Don’t Count on Public Transportation
Buses run infrequently. Uber doesn’t exist. Taxis will charge you an arm and a leg. Your best bet for getting around the island is to rent a car. It will be extremely expensive, but the extra control over your travel just might be worth it.
6. Don’t Go Wandering Through El Yunque National Forest
Any trip to Puerto Rico should undoubtedly include a journey to El Yunque, the country’s famous tropical rainforest reserve. No matter how tempting it might be to leave the designated path while you’re there, don’t do it. Tourists get lost in El Yunque all the time and some have even ended up dead. Be careful.
7. Don’t Spend a Lot of Time in ...
The areas of La Perla, Old San Juan, and El Morro are known to have a higher than average rate of drug trafficking as well as the vagrancy and crime that goes along with it. It’s best to just keep on moving.
8. Don’t Worry About Being 21
For any college students thinking about heading somewhere tropical for Spring Break, you should probably know that the drinking age in Puerto Rico is only 18.
9. Don’t Focus on the Big Cities
The island really comes alive when you schedule a few days to explore the country and stay in a small town. Not only are small towns like Guayama considered safe, they’re also gorgeous and peaceful.
10. Don’t Forget About the ‘Lost Coast’
You won’t have to look too far to find a nice stretch of sand. During the summer months, you might think about visiting the island’s western coast. This stretch of sand tends to be less populated and is home to some of the Caribbean’s best diving and surfing.
Where do you want to know what NOT to do in next?
