Sri Lanka is an island country in South East Asia which has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest.
After a 30 year long civil war which ended in 2009 the diverse country is now opening up more an more for tourism.
The goal of this series is to give you an introduction to the country and the neighboring Maldives starting with Sri Lankas tea region, temples and the rock fortress of sigiriya in this episode.
After arrival we are traveling from Colombo to Kandy by train to take in all the impressive views along the way. In Kandy I go on a river excursion to spot birds along the Mahaweli river before visiting the temple of the tooth in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy.
The tea region around Nuwara Eliya is close to Kandy - you should go there by taking the train from Kandy to Ella. Make sure to visit a tea factory, too!
In the north of Central Sri Lanka the Lion Rock Sigiriya is definitely a Must-Visit. Another one is the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa and the Kaudulla National Park.
This part of the trip was executed within 2weeks by using tuk tuk, buses, boats and trains - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do in Central Sri Lanka:

Kandy is the English name for the city of Maha Nuvara (Senkadagalapura) in the centre of Sri Lanka. It lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy Valley, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka; it is both an administrative and religious city. It is the capital of the Central Province (which encompasses the districts of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya) and also of Kandy District.
Nuwara Eliya meaning city on the plain (table land) or city of light, is a town in Sri Lanka. It is located at an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) in the central highlands and is considered one of the most important locations for Tea production in Sri Lanka. The town is overlooked by Pidurutalagala, the highest mountain in Sri Lanka.

Kandy is a large city in central Sri Lanka. It's set on a plateau surrounded by mountains, which are home to tea plantations and biodiverse rainforest. The city's heart is scenic Kandy Lake (Bogambara Lake), which is popular for strolling. Kandy is famed for sacred Buddhist sites, including the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) shrine, celebrated with the grand Esala Perahera annual procession.In the nearby Peradeniya suburb, the Royal Botanic Gardens is known for its orchid collection and massive palm trees. The Ceylon Tea Museum, in a former tea factory, has a library and exhibits that explore Sri Lanka's history as a major exporter of the beverage. Kandy is also a gateway to the Knuckles Mountains, a popular destination for hiking and camping.
Weather and Events:
Kandy is warm year-round, with an Apr/May–Sep monsoon season and frequent thunderstorms Oct–Nov. Many people choose to visit Dec–Mar, when rain is less prevalent. Apr–May are also popular, due to events like Avurudu (Buddhist New Year, Apr), and Vesak (May), when locals celebrate the birth of Buddha with religious rites and artistic performances. Esala Perahera (Aug), a 10-day festival honoring the tooth relic at Sri Dalada Maligawa shrine, is known for its elaborate street shows and elephant parades.

The famous scenic train ride from Kandy is by far the number one thing to do in Sri Lanka. I took the train all the way to Nanu Oya train station in Nuwara Eliya. I stayed with a Couchsurfing host, Niluke, and took a tea factory tour around the tea plantation the following day. Nuwara Eliya is also famously known as the Little Britain of Sri Lanka.

The trip was absolutely AMAZING, im so surprised we did so much in just 2 days. The highlight of the trip for me of course is the hike to top of the Hanthana Mountain Range which was STUNNING! How gorgeous is this train ride from Colombo to Kandy? It was my first time taking that train and I would gladly do it next time. Highly recommend going by train if that's a possibility.

KANDY, SRI LANKA - One of the best meals I had in Sri Lanka was an all meat meal made of beef. Huge thank you to my friend Ruzaina for organising it all, and for her Grandmother taking the time to cook for us so love her traditional recipes.
There were about five or six different meat curries, all prepared with a variety of different spices. We also had two different types of tongue, one cooked in a spicy gravy sauce, the other quicker preparation and it was a little more chewy. All the meat was incredibly tasty, especially all of the spices and having the variety of different meats. Another one of the best dishes was the intestines mixed with chunks of fat, and grandma insisted that I need to fast before it started to get cold.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - After lunch we headed to one of the most important religious sites in Kandy just to walk around for a while.
Siri Ramya Hotel - Finally for dinner in Kandy, we just had a few hoppers and roti along with tea.
Again, huge thank you to Ruzaina ( and her Grandmother and family for hosting me and cooking an outstanding meal.

The Heart of Sri Lanka | Ella - Kandy - Dambulla | Episode #16
On our final leg of our Sri Lanka trip we experience one of the most talked about about train rides in the country, along with a few other highlights found in central Sri Lanka.
During this vlog we visited the following spots,
1. Ella - Kandy train ride. (We suggest booking reserved tickets at least 30 days in advance, unless you want the true local experience!)
2. Kandy Lake
3. Kandy cultural dance -
4. Dambulla Royal Cave Temple
5. Pidurangala Rock
Please note there are dogs at most of these places, however they’re not aggressive and just want to go about their day. (So unless you have something for them like water or food, avoid sporadically approaching them just to be safe)

2. Kandy - Dambulla via minivan. We simply showed up to the Kandy bus station and purchase a ticket on the day. Buses run very regularly!
