Welfare for Animals in Goa (WAG)
Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
~ Albert Einstein
Thousands of animals (domestic and wild) are assaulted, killed, abused and tortured every year. A visit to Goa in 2000 made Atul Sarin realise that while the stray and homeless animals of Goa are far better treated than in other places, they could definitely do with help, especially in the monsoon.
Atul and his friends set up Welfare for Animals in Goa (WAG), an NGO dedicated to helping animals in distress. For over 4 years, a dedicated team of staff and volunteers have been using their animal welfare experience to enhance the lives of Goa's animals. Not only do they rescue injured animals, but they also have fostering and adoption programmes for abandoned animals, beach monitoring & feeding programs for starving cats and dogs during Goa's 'off-season', the monsoon. The WAG clinic, in Siolim, conducts sterilisation, vaccinations and other medical assistance to homeless animals. They have also set up a state-wide network, on Facebook. Now a thriving community, this social media network has close to 3000 animal lovers reporting and preventing abuse, exchanging information and helping in rescues.
WAG has also begun conducting workshops with local school children, to help them learn the importance of kindness and animal welfare. Know more about WAG by going to their website: wagoa.com

ARC (Animal Rescue Centre) Goa, India
A day in the life of the Animal Rescue Centre!
ARC was founded in 2005 by Janie O’Connor and is based just outside of Palolem in South Goa, India. ARC was set up as a direct response to the high volume of stray animals in and around the local area, creating a rescue centre where stray or injured animals can be re-homed and cared for by the centre workers and volunteers.
We'd love you to come and visit us! There's always plenty to do here at ARC whether that's dog walking, feeding or puppy and kitten cuddling!! All of the dogs at ARC have been vaccinated against Rabies and other diseases so it's completely safe for you to visit us.
The best time to visit is either for a morning at 9.30am or in the afternoon at 2.30pm. That is when all the dogs need walking and also when we need the most amount of help with other bits around the centre (like feeding, cuddling, puppy washing etc!).
We break for lunch between 12pm and 2pm so please don't visit then, as we won't be here to welcome you and show you around.
We have clean drinking water at the centre, so bring a bottle and you will be able to fill it up whilst you're here. Sadly we don't have any toilet facilities yet at ARC (as we're currently in the process of fundraising to build one!) so, nature is your friend whilst you're visiting us as we're surrounded by woodland.
We look forward to meeting you!
