Globe Trekker Series 6 - Eastern Caribbean Trailer
Interested in more information? Follow this link to find out everything you need to know!
Justine Shapiro travels to the Eastern Caribbean, a 600 mile long group of islands also known as the Lesser Antilles. Most people think of the Caribbean as a luxury vacation destination The beach on the tiny island of Carriacou for the rich and famous. But as Justine discovers, the Caribbean has a unique history and fascinating culture that will captivate the independent traveller.
She begins her journey in culturally diverse Trinidad, just 6 miles off the coast of South America. In the month of March the streets of the capital, Port of Spain, come alive with revellers at one of the largest street parties on earth. The carnival was introduced by French Catholic plantation owners who used to hold masquerade balls to celebrate the last 2 days before lent. When slavery was abolished, the masqueraders took to the streets and today more than 250,000 people take part in the festivities. Justine finds herself a costume and takes the opportunity to learn the Caribbean arts of chipping and wining.
With the party over on the stroke of midnight, Justine flies north to Trinidad’s sister island,Tobago. Famous for its unspoiled beaches and crystal clear waters, Tobago was a wealthy British colony until 1962, thriving on the coconut, sugar and cocoa plantations. Justine visitsRichmond Great House, a former plantation turned guesthouse, and witnesses a local gambling institution, the Buccoo goat race.
From Tobago, Justine journeys north to the spice island of Grenada. Here, she pays a visit to the thriving St. George market, which sells all the weird and wonderful fruit, vegetables and spices grown in Grenada. She samples a regional aphrodisiac known as souse, a hearty soup made of vegetables, cow skin and pigs’ feet, before catching a local bus to Pearl’s air field. Here she sees some old Cuban planes and learns about the 1979 coup by the people’s revolutionary government, when Grenada came to the attention of the world’s media.
Justine sails 17 miles north, over an underground volcano known as ‘Cancun Jimmy’, to the tiny island of Carriacou. Just 7 miles long by 2 miles wide, Carriacou is a small island with a big culture: every year the locals compete in Shakespeare recital contests, a tradition begun 100 years ago when a plantation owner who wanted to educate his slaves introduced Shakespearean masks to the island. Carriacou is also the home of internationally celebrated Caribbean artist Canute Calliste who claims to have been inspired by a mermaid he encountered on the beach when he was a boy.
Justine journeys on to Dominica, which was named by Christopher Columbus after the Latin word for Sunday, the day in which he first sighted the island. Dominica boasts the largest Justine dresses up for the Trinidad carnivalocean rainforest in the Caribbean and Justine hikes through one of the protected nature reserves. It’s also home to the oldest woman in the world, 125 year-old Ma Pempo. Justine pays her a visit to try and discover the secret of her long life. Next day, she sets out for Champagne Reef, one of the most dramatic dive sites in the Caribbean. Dominica’s underwater landscape developed around the crater of a submerged Soufriere volcano, which attracts an incredible variety of tropical marine life including the puffa fish, angel fish, trumpet fish and parrot fish.
For the final leg of her journey, Justine returns to the north-east coast of Trinidad to witness one of the most awe-inspiring events in the natural world, the giant leatherback turtle laying her eggs on the beach. Weighing up to half a tonne and measuring 8 ft in length, the leatherback is the largest turtle in the sea and one of the oldest species on the planet – leatherbacks have been around since the time of the dinosaurs.

Athleticakrew One Day Vacation Grande Riviere
This small, fishing village of three hundred and fifty people (350) is still one of the most naturally beautiful spots on the island. While Grande Riviere is situated on the North Coast of Trinidad. Access road to this scenic location makes its way up the picturesque East Coast through a series of quaint fishing villages and past some breathtaking coastal views.
Without a doubt, this is nature at her best with many different species of birds appearing. The pawi (piping guan), an endangered bird that nests in the Grande Riviere forest, can sometimes be seen in the wild nutmeg trees that dot its terrain. It is to this spot that the Leatherback Turtle returns to lay her precious cargo year after year.
Speyside Sunrise
This home-made video is from my recent trip to Speyside, Tobago, where I camped with two friends on the beach for 7 days. Meeca (BEST FRIEND) and I captured some beautiful sunrises on camera. During our stay she mentioned that she loved John Mayer's Clarity so I played it for her from my Blackberry. It was a nice moment we shared and that was the song I chose to put on this slideshow of sorts. No copyright infringement is intended. This is purely a slideshow/video with a song we both like. It really captures the mood. If you are watching this, I do hope you like it. :)

Best Places to Visit in Trinidad and Tobago
Best Places to Visit in Trinidad and Tobago
At just 42km long and around 14km at its widest point, Tobago is a breeze to roam around. Anyone spending more than a few days on the island will quickly familiarise themselves with the roads, bays and bends, and it will all start to feel like home. You’ll never have to drive more than an hour and a half – which also means that hotel and even airport pickups may be included as part of tours. Be aware though that the easily queasy may want to limit the number of times they zigzag across the island; the roads rollercoaster along steep hillsides and motion sickness is even more of a risk than sea sickness. The reward is that every crest of a hill results in sweeping views of sapphire seas or emerald jungle; the journey really is all part of the adventure.

SUMMARY
=======
The Caribbean (, locally ) is a region of North America that consists of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (some surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and some bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean) and the surrounding coasts. The region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American mainland, east of Central America, and north of South America.
Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 700 islands, islets, reefs and cays. (See the list of Caribbean islands.) These islands generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. The Caribbean islands, consisting of the Greater Antilles on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), are part of the somewhat larger West Indies grouping, which also includes the Lucayan Archipelago (comprising the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands). The Lucayans and, less commonly, Bermuda, are also sometimes considered Caribbean despite the fact that none of these islands border the Caribbean Sea. In a wider sense, the mainland countries, regions, and territories of Belize, the Caribbean region of Colombia, Cozumel, the Yucatán Peninsula, Margarita Island, the Guyanas (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Guayana Region in Venezuela, and Amapá in Brazil), are often included due to their political and cultural ties with the region.Geopolitically, the Caribbean islands are usually regarded as a subregion of North America and are organized into 30 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies. From December 15, 1954, to October 10, 2010, there was a country known as the Netherlands Antilles composed of five states, all of which were Dutch dependencies. From January 3, 1958, to May 31, 1962, there was also a short-lived political union called the West Indies Federation composed of ten English-speaking Caribbean territories, all of which were then British dependencies. The West Indies cricket team continues to represent many of those nations.

Bonaire
Bonaire (/bɒˈnɛər/; Dutch: Bonaire, Papiamentu: Boneiru) is a Caribbean island which, together with Aruba and Curaçao, forms the group known as the ABC islands, located off the north coast of South America near the western part of Venezuela. Bonaire's capital is Kralendijk. The island has a permanent population of 17,408 and an area of 294 km² (together with nearby uninhabited Klein Bonaire).
The name Bonaire is thought to have originally come from the Caquetio word 'Bonay'. The early Spanish and Dutch modified its spelling to Bojnaj and also Bonaire, which means Good Air.

Grenada West Indies
Welcome to Grenada West Indies. In 2003, Motown Maurice ventured upon his first trip to the Island of Spice joined by his Grenadian born mom. It was her first trip back in over 20 years. This mini documentary is personal, historical and educational.
Grenada is an island country consisting of Grenada itself and six smaller islands at the southern end of the Grenadines in the southeastern Caribbean Sea. Grenada is located northwest of Trinidad and Tobago, northeast of Venezuela, and southwest of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Grenada is also known as the Island of Spice because of the production of nutmeg and mace crops, of which it is one of the world's largest exporters. Its size is 344 square kilometres (133 sq mi), with an estimated population of 110,000. Its capital is St. George's. The national bird of Grenada is the critically endangered Grenada dove. #Grenada #IslandofSpice #Caribbean #Westindies #Vacation #StGeorges #Nutmeg #Spices #Island

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Caledonia & Wind Point (#709)
[Latest Airdate: June 21, 2018]
[Original Airdate: March 29, 2018]
So, Caledonia and Wind Point cover a lot of ground in southeast Wisconsin. This big area is home to big animals (like Libby's horses and Jo Don Farm's camels), and big companies (Norco, for one), big bugs (grown at the SC Johnson Institute of Insect Science for Family Health --- yikes!) and a big Wurlitzer organ (under a small house --- no kidding!).
It's also home to people with big talent (especially Bill Reid and Sherry Lou) and places of big beauty (the Wind Point Light House and The Prairie School, just to name a few). There's big fun to be had (surfing and kickball), and you can satisfy your big taste buds (at Sebastian's).
Yep. Caledonia and Wind Point are a big deal!
