Kerkeslin Goat Lick Lookout - Jasper National Park - Alberta - Canada

Mountain goats in Jasper & Banff National Park
Sometimes it looks like a goat and occasionally acts as one,
but the mountain goat is really an antelope. Its forefathers came from Asia and Europe, and like the bighorn, they crossed the Bering Strait and 'discovered' America by way of Alaska. Over the course of millions of years this goat evolved into an excellent mountaineer.
On top of that, they have adapted to the tough, frozen winter climate.
Their thick fur allows them to withstand the coldest of temperatures.
A couple of times a year, the mountain goats come down from the mountains to lick mineral-rich stones. It is believed that they do this to absorb those substances that allow them to grow their winter coat.
In summer, they moult and lose part of it.
Mountain goats can usually be found on steep mountain sides, at high altitude. Safety first, at least for mountain goats that is.
The heart of summer. Meltwater in every nook and cranny swells the rivers and mountain lakes, so contributing to the circle of life.

Jasper's Icefield Parkway
Right by Sunwapta Falls Rocky Mountain Lodge there's a fantastic place to catch the white mountain goats of Jasper National Park when they are out for a lick! It's called the Goat Lick Viewpoint.
The other fantastic part of it is the VIEW! The Athabasca River rushing by with a stellar panorama of Mountains!
This divine spot is about a 10 - 15 minute drive from the lodge, and makes for a very nice bike ride:)

Goat Lick
In the south end of Glacier National Park, just east of Essex, lies a mineral deposit that the mountain goats find particularly delicious in the spring. While driving along Highway 2 near Essex, MT, look for the sign for the Goat Lick and pull into the parking lot. The best time to see the goats is in the spring and you may even be rewarded by elk or other wildlife (but more likely if you come at dusk). It is a short wheelchair accessible paved walk to an overlook, but you can see them from the road as they walk underneath or right at the trailhead.

Bighorn sheep eating our car! (Jasper National Park, Canada)
We were halted by these inquisitive animals while driving down Maligne Valley Road in Jasper, AB. Within a few minutes, we were crowded by both sheep and also tourists taking pictures of our funny plight!!! We stayed for about 30 minutes before moving on due to a rainstorm. At one point we counted over 10 bighorn sheep climbing, bucking, and in general vying for a spot to lick our car clean! :D
Still no clue what they liked so much about our car.
