A slow wander around Goathland Train Station in North Yorkshire, famous for it's appearance in the Harry Potter movies as Hogwarts Station.
Goathland railway station is a station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and serves the village of Goathland in the North York Moors National Park, North Yorkshire, England.
It is famous for appearing as Aidensfield station in the television series Heartbeat, as the Hogwarts Express stop at Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter films, as Mannerton in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small, and in the end of the video of Holding Back the Years, a Simply Red song released in 1985.

Goathland railway station (originally known as Goathland Mill) is on the deviation line opened by the North Eastern Railway in 1865 to avoid the cable-worked Beck Hole Incline, which was part of the original 1836 Whitby and Pickering Railway route.
The original Goathland station was located at the head of the incline, where there are still some Y&NM cottages, together with a single W&P one.
The Goathland station buildings were to the design of the NER's architect Thomas Prosser and were very similar to those being built concurrently (by the same contractor, Thomas Nelson) on the Castleton to Grosmont section of the Esk Valley Line at Danby, Lealholm, Glaisdale and Egton.
The collection of buildings at Goathland Station is very little altered since they were built – the last recorded change (apart from NYMR restoration) was in 1908. A tributary of the River Esk flows close by the station
Deemed to be uneconomic, the line was closed to passenger traffic in 1965, and freight traffic a year later, as part of the Beeching cuts, before reopening in 1973 as part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Hornby modelled Goathland as part of the Skaledale Junction series, which included the footbridge, waiting room and Hogwarts Express.
The station and its environs also featured in the film Keeping Mum.
The charming village of Goathland is just a few minutes’ walk up the bank from the station, with a great range of shops and pubs. You could explore the national park; embark on a country walk along the Rail Trail back to Grosmont or to the Mallyan Spout Waterfall.
Goathland Station has its very own shop, and has a tea room which is in a converted 1922 style goods shed.

Goathland is a village and parish in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, it is in the North York Moors national park due north of Pickering, off the A169 to Whitby. It has a station on the steam-operated North Yorkshire Moors Railway line.
According to the 2011 UK census, Goathland parish had a population of 438, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 407. Goathland village is 500 feet above sea level and has a history extending from Viking times. The name Goathland is probably a corruption of 'good land'. Alternatively, it may come from 'Goda's land', Goda being an Old English personal name.
In 1109 King Henry I granted land to Osmund the Priest and the brethren of the hermitage of Goathland, then called Godelandia, for the soul of his mother Queen Matilda, who had died in 1083. This is recorded in a charter held at Whitby Abbey. The village was a spa town in the 19th century. There are many hotels and guest houses in the village, the largest, the Mallyan Spout Hotel, is named after a nearby waterfall. There is a caravan site, reached by driving along the track which is the site of the older railway route, 1835 to 1860.
Much of the surrounding land is owned by the Duchy of Lancaster. The Duchy's tenants have a common right extending for hundreds of years to graze their black faced sheep on the village green and surrounding moorland.
The village was the setting of the fictional village of Aidensfield in the Heartbeat television series set in the 1960s. Many landmarks from the series are recognisable, including the stores, garage/funeral directors, the public house and the railway station. The pub is called the Goathland Hotel, but in the series is the Aidensfield Arms. After filming for some years a replica was built in the studio.
Goathland railway station is on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The railway is run by a charitable trust with some paid staff but is mostly operated by volunteers, running nearly all the year including Christmas. It carries more than 250,000 passengers a year and is the second-longest preserved line in Britain. Goathland railway station was used as the location for Hogsmeade railway station in the Harry Potter films, and the line filmed for Harry's journey.

Goathland Station is part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, one of the world’s best heritage railways. Located in North Yorkshire, England, this is where the very first filming on the Harry Potter film series took place, when filming on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone started in September 2000. The railway runs steam trains through the North York Moors National Park daily for most of the year through some amazing scenery. My film takes you on a tour around the station.
Harry Potter Filming Location
The very first filming on the Harry Potter film series took place at Goathland Railway Station on the 29 September 2000. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were all involved in the first day of filming on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone which was a day/night shoot at Goathland. Goathland is located on the North Yorkshire Moors and was used as Hogsmeade Station in the film.
The very first scene filmed was actually the final scene of the movie, where Hagrid waves goodbye to the students after surviving their first year at Hogwarts! The night filming captured the students arriving at Hogsmeade Station, before continuing their magical journey to get to Hogwarts for the very first time. Goathland was only used once as Hogsmeade Station in the Harry Potter film series.
During many of the scenes filmed at Goathland, Hagrid was actually played by Martin Bayfield, a 6 foot tall former England Rugby player. Bayfield was used to give Hagrid the height required in the long shots. He wore a prosthetic head to make him look like Robbie Coltrane, which is today on display at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Tour at Leavesden Studios, London.
Not everything went according to plan, at the start of filming at Goathland Daniel Radcliffe wore green contact lenses, to match Harry’s description in J.K.Rowlng’s novels. Unfortunately Daniel had a bad reaction to wearing the lenses during the filming and had to stop wearing them and so Harry’s eyes became blue. You may notice that Daniel Radcliffe’s eyes may appear bloodshot in some of these shots.
Emma Watson wore prosthetic fake teeth whilst filming at Goathland, to match Hermione’s description in the novels. During the filming at this location the filmmakers felt that the teeth were affecting Emma’s speech and didn’t look right, so they decided to stop using them after this day’s filming. Can you spot them in these two scenes in the film?
The film crew spent about a week in total at the location, including preparing the station for filming. A number of the children from the village were used as extras in the scenes. Goathland Station has been used by filmmakers on a number of occasions. The station appeared in Possession starring Gwyneth Paltrow. On television the station appeared frequently as Aidensfield in the police drama Heartbeat, set in the 1960s and in All Creatures Great and Small as Mannerton.
The Station
Goathland Station was built in 1865. All of the stations of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway authentically recreate different periods through time which has made them popular with filmmakers, Goathland has been restored as a station in the 1920s. Today Goathland Station has its very own shop and a tea room which is in a converted 1922 style goods shed. The station has a small pay and display car park.

Goathland Station is part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which is one of the world’s greatest heritage railways located in North Yorkshire, England, that runs trains through the North York Moors National Park. Opened in 1836, today the line is a tourist attraction which runs steam trains daily from March until November along 24 miles of track, through the amazing scenery of the National Park countryside and also run special services throughout the year. Tickets can be booked in advance and you can hop on and hop off at any station along your journey.

Goathland, near Scarborough, is a small town in North Yorkshire and is surrounded by moors and countryside. The charming village is just a few minutes walk from the station, with a great range of shops, cafes and pubs. You can also walk one of the trails in the national park to Grosmont or to the Mallyan Spout Waterfall.

Goathland's moorland village has attracted visitors since the 19th century, but numbers soared following its appearance (as 'Aidensfield') in the television series 'Heartbeat' and its role in the 'Harry Potter' films. It's fun to arrive on the trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, after which walkers can enjoy lots of local strolls and hikes.

As well as serving as the location for the fictional village of Aidensfield, Goathland features in its own right as an important setting in Dan Chapman's 2014 dystopian, futuristic novel Closed Circuit. Forming a setting for the denouement of the novel, it is explained that the antagonist owns the entire village, and the nearby MoD site serves as a base for his operations.
Goathland also features in Ice, a novel by Australian writer Louis Nowra (Allen & Unwin, 2008).
HEARTBEAT
Heartbeat is a British police drama series set in 1960s North Riding of Yorkshire based on the Constable series of novels written by ex-policeman Peter N Walker, under the pseudonym Nicholas Rhea, and broadcast on ITV in 18 series between 1992 and 2010. It was made by ITV Studios (formerly Yorkshire Television) at the Leeds Studios and on location. Heartbeat first aired on Friday 10 April 1992 (it was later moved to Sunday evenings). The 372nd and final episode aired on Sunday 12 September 2010.
Heartbeat proved popular from the beginning, when early series consistently drew over 10 million viewers. In 2001, Heartbeat came sixth in the UK TV ratings list with a peak audience of 13.82 million, and it was sixth again in 2003, with 12.8 million viewers.In autumn 2008, typical viewing figures were around 6 million per episode.
Originally conceived as a vehicle for Nick Berry, on whom early series centred, the show has seen many characters come and go over the years. The final series starred Derek Fowlds, William Simons, Tricia Penrose, David Lonsdale, Peter Benson, Steven Blakeley, John Duttine, Gwen Taylor, Lisa Kay, Clare Wille, Joe McFadden, Rupert Ward-Lewis, and Nikki Sanderson. Derek Fowlds and William Simons were the only main-cast actors who remained with the show over its entire 18-series run.
The series was filmed at various locations around North Yorkshire. These include shots on the moors and frequent mentions of local roads (like the A171.) Exterior scenes of Aidensfield are filmed in the village of Goathland in North Yorkshire, with the village's railway station also appearing occasionally.

This is a video of a steam powered train pulling into the Goathland Station in Northeast UK. My wife and I got to see this thanks to our two great friends June and Larry. Without them, we might have missed this attraction on our vacation.

The village of Goathland - Heartbeat Country
In November 1991, Yorkshire TV's white trucks rolled into the village of Goathland, and filming began on what we now know as Heartbeat, and the village was called Aidensfield for the first time.
Episode 1 was shown on British TV on 10th April 1992, and in 2010, more than 350 episodes later, the programme still attracts a very large audience world wide.
