Video created by ©Passioneye. Subramaniya Iyer was born to Amirthalinga Iyer in the village of Thirukadaiyur. Thirukkadaiyur has one of elegant Brahmin quarters near the temple called as agraharams established by the Maratha ruler Serfoji I, a great admirer of Brahmin poets and bards, in the early part of the 18th century. The village was famous for its Shiva temple, callled Amritaghateswarar-Abirami Temple,Thirukkadaiyur. Right from his childhood, Subramaniya Iyer was drawn to the temple and the Goddess
As he grew, Iyer developed a fanatical devotion to the goddess Abhirami. He would sit in a corner of the temple meditating upon the Goddess and singing her praises. As time passed, he was forever immersed in meditation upon the Goddess that he began to observe the supposed likeliness of the Goddess in the persona of the women around him and often showered them with flowers. According to sources, soon, a particular section of the populace began to regard him as a madman.
One day, Raja Serfoji, the Maratha Raja of Thanjavur who ruled over the land, visited the temple to pay homage to Shiva. On noticing the peculiar behavior of Iyer who was in deep meditation, he inquired the other priests about the individual. One of them remarked that he was a madman while another rejected this categorization explaining to the king that Iyer was only an ardent devotee of the Abhirami. Seeking to know the truth himself, Serfoji approached Subramaniya Iyer and asked him what day of the month it was i.e. whether it was a full-moon day or a new moon day. Iyer answered mistakenly that it was a Pournami (full moon day) who could see nothing else but the shining luminant form of the Goddess in his meditation. While in reality, the night was an Amavasya (new moon day).
After Subramaniya Iyer's meditation on Devi, other priest's in the temple informed about the incident and the way he answered king. later Iyer realizing his mistake, he supposedly lit a huge fire and erected a platform over it supported by a hundred ropes. He sat upon the platform and prayed to Devi. He cut off one rope after another in succession on completion of each verse of his prayer. These hymns form the Abhirami Anthadhi. On the verge of completing the 79th hymn, the goddess manifested herself before him and threw her thadanga (diamond earring ornament), over the sky such that it shined with bright light upon the horizon. Sri Abirami Devi bestowed him saying Dear son, I changed your mad answer as truth, overcome with ecstasy, Subramaniya Iyer composed 22 more verses in praise of her.
The king who witnessed it, bestowed upon the latter the title of Abirami Pattar or One who worships Goddess Abhirami or The Priest of Goddess Abhirami

THIRUKKADAIYUR Temple | திருக்கடையூர் | షష్ఠి పూర్తి పూజలు జరిగే ఎక్కయిక అబిరామి దేవి ఆలయం | it's me
Thirukkadaiyur (Thirukadavur) is a templetown on the east coast of Tamil Nadu, about 300 km south of Chennai and 15 km north of Karaikal. The famous Amritaghateswarar - Abirami Temple of Tirukkadaiyur is associated with the legends of Markandeya and Abirami Pattar, which is a replica. The original temple, Thirukkadaiyur Mayanam now called Thirumeignanam, built in c. 11th century, was ravaged by sea and is in ruins now. People worship and pray at Thirukkadaiyur temple for long life.
Amritaghateswarar Abhirami Temple(திருக்கடையூர் அமிர்தகடேசுவரர் கோயில்) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva in his manifestation as Destroyer of Death and his wife Parvati as Abhirami. It is located in Thirukkadaiyur (Thirukadavur), 21 km East of Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu in India. This temple is associated with the legend of Shiva saving his young devotee, Markendeya from death, and the tale of a saint, Abirami Pattar a devotee of the presiding goddess. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.
This is one of the holy places of Saivismtoday. Legend has it that Mrikandu, a sage and devotee of Lord Siva, prayed to God to bless him with a son. God appeared and gave him a choice to select the type of child he wanted - An honest responsible and virtuous son who will live only for 16 years or a son who would live for 100 years but whose behavior is bad. Mrikandu chose the former.
Markandeya
The boy, named Markandeya also grew up to be an ardent devotee of Siva. The destined time came, when Yama (the lord of death) tried to snatch the life of the boy. Markandeyawent to the temple and clutched at the Siva Lingam in a bid to escape death. Pleased by the boy's belief, Siva rescued him from death, incarnating him as Kalantaka (the ender of death).
The temple complex covers 10 acres and has two gateway towers known as gopurams. The tallest is the eastern tower, with 11 stories and a height of 46 metres (151 ft). The temple has numerous shrines, with those of Amrithaghateswarar and Abhirami being the most prominent.
The temple has six daily rituals at various times from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., and twelve yearly festivals on its calendar. The present masonry structure was built during the Chola dynasty in the 9th century, while later expansions are attributed to Thanjavur Nayaks. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Thirukkadaiyur derives its name from the pot, called Gatam in Tamil. Vishnu, Indra, and the other Devas needed a sublime place to consume the ambrosia that had been churned during the Samudra manthan and, therefore, brought the ambrosia pot here. Before consuming it, they forgot to worship Ganesha, who is to be worshiped before any great undertaking. Ganesha, hurt and offended at the unintentional slight by the devas, stole the pot of Amrita and hid it at Tirukkadaiyur. Ganesha created a Shiva Lingam, dedicated to his father and mother, and poured some of the Amrita over it. The Shiva Lingam at this temple is known as Amrita Ghat Eshwarar, which, translated from Sanskrit literally means Lord that leads to immortality ('Immortality' (Amrita) 'Step' (Ghat) 'Lord' (Eshwarar)). It is also believed that Abhirami incarnated here by the power of Vishnu.
As per popular legend, near the temple of Tirukkadaiyur, there lived a sage named Mrikandu and his wife Marudmati. They were both devotees of Shiva and worshiped him day and night for many years, asking to be graced with a child. After many years of penance, Shiva appeared to Mrikandu and Marudmati. He told them that he heard their prayers and would give them a choice: they could either have a gifted son who would live to be only sixteen, or a son of low intelligence who would live a long life. Mrikandu and Marudmati chose the former, and were blessed with Markandeya, an exemplary son, destined to die at the age of sixteen.
As Markandeya grew, so did his devotion to Shiva. As advised by his father, Markandeya worshipped the Shiva Lingam at Tirukkadaiyur, even bringing water from the Ganges to the temple via an underground passage. On the day he was destined to die, Yama, the deity of death, appeared with his noose to tie around the soul of Markandeya and take it with him. Markandeya sought refuge in the temple and embraced the Siva Lingam. Shiva appeared and warned Yama not to touch Markandeya, as he was under his protection. Yama refused to listen and threw the noose anyway, binding Markandeya and the Lingam together. Angered by Yama's extraordinary arrogance, Shiva kicked him and held him under his foot, making Yama inactive. Markandeya was blessed by Shiva to remain sixteen years old eternally. Shiva came to be known as Kala-samhara (Sanskrit: Destroyer of Time) at this temple.
Meanwhile, with Yama being rendered inactive, there were no deaths on earth, but people were still being born. Burdened by the weight of so many people and unable to sustain their hunger, the earth-goddess, Bhumi Devi, appealed to Shiva for help. Shiva, feeling compassionate for the earth-goddess, released Yama, allowing death to occur again. However, in order to remind Yama never to try to kill someone while they are worshiping Shiva again, the icon of Shiva in this temple is depicted with his forefinger raised in warning.
Since it is believed that Lord Siva subdued Yama in Thirukkadaiyur, the Lord is called Mrityunjaya (Sanskrit: Conqueror of Death or Victorious over Death).

Devotees take part in flower-offering ritual
A large number of devotees witnessed the floral rath procession of Sri Kottai Mariyamman in Dindigul on Friday.
At Kottai Mariamman Temple
Thousands of devotees on Friday witnessed the holy car festival and took part in the flower-offering ceremony which marked the commencement of the annual Maasi festival at Sri Kottai Mariamman Temple near Rock Fort.
Devotees thronged the four Rath streets and also the Palani-Dindigul highway to offer flowers to the Goddess since morning. Several devotees were walking along with the holy car.
The ceremony commenced with special pujas and abishekams to the main deity, Sri Mariamman in the temple near the Rock Fort. Later, the idol was mounted on a floral palanquin that was pulled by a tractor. The car procession started from the temple premises and reached the temple again after passing through the West Car Street, Vanivilasmedu, Dindigul-Palani Highway, Gopal Samudram Street and North, East and South Car Streets.
Trucks and vans were provided for collecting flowers from devotees. Various service organisations and auto and taxi operators’ associations had erected thatched shelters and distributed water, buttermilk and food to devotees. Flower collection centres were also set up on the procession route to collect flowers from them. Water was sprayed on the streets to cool the asphalt road so that pilgrims could walk barefoot.
Heavy police force was deployed on the route and around holy car to regulate the crowd and provide security.
As usual, flower prices had gone up in the wholesale market with the commencement of the festival. Several street vendors were busy in selling flowers on the rath streets.
Traffic diversion
Traffic on Dindigul-Palani Highway and Chatram Road, which was the car procession route, was closed for more than four hours, and buses proceeding to Palani, Coimbatore, Salem and Karur districts were diverted through R.M. Colony Main Road.
Cultural programmes have been arranged on the temple premises during the festival days and adequate facilities have been provided for the devotees.
Flag hoisting will take place on February 20 and the Goddess reaches Nagal Nagar on February 23. Fire walk is scheduled to be held on March 2, Dhasavatharam festival on March 2 and Unjal festival on March 5.
The 12-day festival would conclude with a float festival on March 6.

Exploring the Navagraha Temples. Thiruvenkadu - Lord Mercury Temple.
Welcome to the Thiruvenkadu Swetharanweshwarar temple. This power vertex is dedicated to Lord Budhan.
Lord Budhan who is also called Mercury is one of the chief dieties of Navagraha that rules your life. Budhans blessings are attributed to your intelluctual drive and the influence of knowledge that reflects upon you. He determines how you formulate ideas and share them with others. Your speech patterns, communication style, sense of humor, quickness of thought, presence of mind and so on are attributed to the position of Mercury according to your Birth Chart. In the infinite variety of life mercury determines your fascinations and your mind power. Mercury is influenced on how you think can steer your career path and help you excel.
Thiruvenkadu is the power vertex dedicate to mercury or Lord Budhan. There are other 3 chief dieties along with their shaktis. Lords vaitharaneshwarar and brahma Vidyambikai, aghora moorthi and goddess Durga, Lord Nataraja and Bhadrakali in this temple. Also 3 sacred ponds and 3 temple trees are dedicated to this temple representing each deities power. The Thiruvenkadu Budhan temple is around 3000 years old and holds an important legend that describes the importance and uniqueness of this power vertex.
Legends call that Lord Budhan was born as a transgender and he meditated on Lord Shiva to relieve him from that form. Lord Shiva pleased by Budhan's fervent prayers blessed him with the proper male form and also granted him the powers to rule the intellectual drive and wisdom of the mankind. Apart from the specialty and uniqueness dedicated to lord Budhan there are legends behind the other chief deities of the temple.
The legend behind swetharanweshwarar
Swetha Ketu, an eight year old boy and an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva was destined to die at the end of his eighth year. His stonge devotion made him bold and brave and he knew that the only way to escape from Lord Yama's noose was to cling to the Sivalingam. Yama tried throwing his noose around the boy's neck but happened to pull the Sivalingam along with the boy. Lord Shiva burst open his eye with anger and kicked Yama down to the floor. He commanded Yama not to touch Swethaketu and also blessed the boy that he will live long years. Yama went away crest fallen. Swethaketu then prayed to Lord Shiva more fervently than ever.
Lord Shiva is known to have performed his cosmic bliss or dance here. The 3 holy tanks here known as Agneetheertham, suryatheertham and Chandratheertham are believed to have been created out of the 3 drops which fell of Lord Shiva's eyes when he was dancing.
Aghoramoothi the second chief deity of the temple is said to be the furious form of lord Shiva. There is a great legend describing his form and purpose.
The Legend behind Aghoramoorthy
Maruthwasura, a demon deeply meditated on Lord Shiva to obtain his shoola or devine weapon. With the shoola he started tormenting the saints and the people in the village. Lord Shiva sent Nandi, the bull, his divine vehicle to fight the demon. In turn, the demon thrusted Nandi's body with the Shoola in five places and henceforth the idol of Nandi is seen with scars on its body in this temple.
An angry Shiva, not being able to withstand that Nandi was defeated opened his third eye and killed the demon and this is how the idol of Aghoramoorthi, a manifestation of Shiva's anger holds importance at thiruvankadu.
On worshipping Aghoramoorthi, the obstacles and struggles in one's life will be torn to pieces.
There is also a special sanctum dedicated to Lord Dakshinamoorthy in this temple. The posture of Dakshinamoorthy is very different and unique. He is seen sitting with his legs crossed. You could never see this posture in any other temple. it is said that lord Brahma, the creator attains salvation in Thiruvankadu hence, there is a Brahma Samadhi, a divine tombstone that is erected in this temple.
This special temple dedicated to Lord Budhan dates back to the Cholan era. Lord Budhan is appeased when you perform special poojas to him on Wednesdays. If your Birth Chart holds affliction of the planet Mercury you should choose to perform poojas and homas to Budhan at this most powerful vertex and also offer green clothes to him.
Maasimagam is a very special celebration at Thiruvankadu. The Thiruvankadu is also known as Aadichidambaram and it is believed that Chidambara rahasyam, the unreveiled secret of Chidambaram temple is a unique feature of this temple as well. A pilgrimage planned to this temple will shower your life with the grace of Lord Budhan. You will witness a divine and positive intervention taking away the misfortunes of your life and replacing it with abundant joy and prosperity.
