HIKING IN CHRISTCHURCH - Godley Heads, New Zealand
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everybody! Hope you all have a wonderful festive season.
While we were looking for the best things to do in Christchurch, our friends decided to take us hiking in Godley Head, just a short drive away from the city.
This beautiful place is perfect for mountain biking, hiking and hanging out at the gorgeous beaches, and we have an amazing time exploring the old World War 2 buildings and stunning coastline.
It's definitely not to be missed when you are travelling to New Zealand. For such an easy walk, the rewards are massive. Seriously, how good are these views?!

Taylors Mistake & Godley Head | NZ Vlog 20
The Taylors Mistake to Godley Head walk is one of the most beautiful in the Christchurch area! With steep cliffs and azure water, it is everything that is amazing about the Banks Peninsula. We were unable get out of the city on this particular weekend, so we decided to stay closer to home but still get out and explore. Taylors Mistake is far enough from the city that you feel like you have escaped it for the day, but you only need about 30 minutes to get there.

Godley Heads Coastal Defence Battery, Christchurch NZ
Godley Head, an exposed headland on top of sheer 120 metre cliffs at the head of the Lyttelton Harbour offers clear views across to Banks Peninsular and far down the Canterbury coastline. As one of New Zealand's most complete coastal defence sites, the Godley Head Coastal Defence Battery offers a glimpse into the military defences put in place during the early stages of WWII.
Godley Head Track, Christchurch :: Long White Gypsy
This stunning track starts from the carpark at Taylor's Mistake beach, about 40 minutes' drive from central Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island.
The loop track is approximately 8km in length and takes around 2hr45m to 3hr to complete. It is a shared use track by pedestrians and mountain bikers.
Dogs are permitted on the track, but authorities advise they are to be kept on a leash.
The track passes by the site of a WWII coastal defence battery with gun emplacements, old military buildings and tunnels. Unfortunately, when I completed this track the main battery area was closed off for remedial works so I was not able to explore this area any further.
Whereas the battery is touted as the 'main attraction', for me the stunning coastal scenery (typical of the South Island's battered Pacific east coast) was the showstopper, especially considering Christchurch turned on the weather on this mid-autumn day.
The track is easy walking, for all ages and levels. Connections to the Crater Rim Walkway and Scarborough Bluffs Trail are available at both ends, turning this short day hike into a longer adventure.
Definitely a MUST for a day-hike in Christchurch.

I really enjoyed 3hours Godleys head walking the track with spectacular coastal views. Since September is a middle of lambing season, there are quite a few cute lambs around. Our kids were happy to see them. Some historical sites were interesting too. Mist drifting onto the land from the sea at twilight time was so beautiful. That was definitely one of the most magical times of the year for me. There are not many trees around on the track which means it is hard to find a shade to have a rest. So If you go there in the middle of summer, prepare yourself well and don't forget to bring plenty of water with you.

A perfect spot for hiking, biking, paragliding and etc. Only 25 minutes drive from the city and then you can have a wonderful location to do your activity.
The name Te Onepoto/ Taylors Mistake is one of New Zealand's dual placenames. The maori portion, Te Onepoto, means short or little beach. For the English portion, the Lyttelton Times in 1865 said it was originally called Vincent's Bay, and more recently Taylors Mistake, owing to the master of a vessel running in here during the night-time, thinking he was about to pass over the sumner bar.
Awaroa/Godley Head, was built in 1939 became a coastal defence battery in world war 2 ranked as one of the top ten New Zealand coastal defence heritage sites until today. Even before the fort was built, the visual range of the headland was used to guide ships around the peninsula, with the help of the Godley Head light. The lighthouse, built in 1865, had to be moved during wwII to make way to the fort. During the Christchurch earthquakes of 2011 parts of the cliffs became unstable, and the cupola and glassed in lantern room of the lighthouse was removed to preserve it. Public access is not available to the remains of the lighthouse.
