Goindwal Sahib and the 84 steps - Guru Amar Das ji
GOINDVAL the firstever place of Sikh pilgrimage so designated by its founder, Guru Amar Das. This in fact was the spot where the ancient eastwest highway crossed the River Beas. With the renovation of the highway by Sher Shalh Suri, the Afghan ruler of north India (1540-45), this ferry site became an important transit point. This led one Goinda or Gonda, a Marvaha Khatri trader, to plan establishing an habitation at the western end of the ferry. Thwarted in his endeavour by natural calamities which Goinda attributed to evil spirits, he repaired to Khadur to seek Guru Angad's blessing. The Guru deputed his devoted disciple, (Guru) Amar Das, to help Goinda. Amar Das, who knew that track very well as he had been carrying river water from this place to Khadur daily for his Master's ablutions, laid the foundation of a village which was named after Goinda. After his apointment as Guru in 1552, Guru Amar Das shifted from Khadur to Goindval. In 1552, Guru Amar Das commenced the digging in Goindval of a baoli, i.e. a well with steps descending down to water level which, when completed, attracted pilgrims from far and near. Goindval also became ,in the time of Guru Amar Das, the centre of an annual fair on the occasion of Baisakhi. Even after Guru Amar Das's successor. Guru Ram Das, had built up Amritsar and made it his permanent seat, devotees continued to visit Goindval to have a dip in the sacred baoli and pay homage at other local shrines.

History
The origin of the Goindwal name
The location of the town was an ancient eastwest highway that crossed the river Beas connecting Delhi and Lahore and the head of the most important ferries on the river Beas. With the renovation of the highway by Sher Shall Sur, the Afghan ruler of north India (1540–45), this ferry site became an important transit point.[4]
This led one Goinda or Gonda, a Marvaha Khatri trader, to plan establishing an habitation at the western end of the ferry.Thwarted in his endeavour by natural calamities which Goinda attributed to evil spirits which nobody settled there, Goinda went to Khadur to seek Guru Angad's blessing and asked if anyone of the two Guru's sons of the Guru starts living there, the superstition of the people regarding the evil spirits will vanish and the village will be inhabited.
The Guru agreed to help Goinda but none of the Guru's sons agreed to this proposal so the Guru asked his devoted disciple, (Guru) Amar Das, to help Goinda. Bhai Amar Das, who knew that tract very well as he had been carrying river water from this place to Khadur daily for his Master`s ablutions, laid the foundation of Goinda's village which then was named after Goinda, Goindwal. The trader Goinda had a special place built in Goindwal to honor Guru Angad Dev ji
Bhai Amar Das's daily seva of bringing Guru Angad water
The Guru requested Bhai Amar Das to make Goindwal his home. During the night Bhai Amar Das slept in Goindwal and during the day he resumed his duties and carried water from the river Beas to Khadur for Guru Angad’s morning bath.Along the way Bhai Amar Das recited Japji Sahib, the Sikh's morning prayer. Gurdwara Damdama Sahib was built in commemoration of the place where Guru Amar Das took rest under a tree about one and a half miles from Goindwal, the historic tree which is also still preserved today. Guru Amardas stayed in Khadur to hear the hymn of Asa di Var, a composition of Guru Angad, interspersed with hymns of Nanak. He then returned to Goindwal to fetch more water for the guru’s communal kitchen and carried it back to Khadur where Guru Angad, and his followers resided.
Gurdwara Baoli Sahib Goindwal
Goindwal (also spelled Goindval) is the site of a township and Sikh shrine Goindwal Baoli, the Well of 84 Steps which was constructed in the 16th century by Guru Amar Das. Goindwal is located on the banks of the River Beas. Originally a ferry landing which connected a popular East - West crossroads of the time, Goindwal became a Sikh center and the first Sikh pilgrimage site. Goindwal has more than a dozen spiritual points of interest, and continues to be a popular destination of devotees who visit the important Sikh shrines of the Tarn Taran District in Punjab, India.

Gurdwara San Sahib (31.575°N 74.767°E) is situated in the village of Basarke in Amritsar District, Punjab, India. Guru Amar Das ji was named next Guru by Guru Angad Dev ji, but Datu ji the son of Guru Angad Dev was sure that as the Guru's son he should be appointed the Guru. He forced Guru Amar Das ji to leave Goindwal Sahib. Guru Amar Das being a humble person, returned to his family village of Basarke.
Here the Guru shut himself up in a small hut with a note on the door. The note said, He who opens this door is no Sikh of mine, nor am I am his Guru. When a delegation of Sikhs lead by Baba Buddha ji found the hut they were perplexed as what to do. Finally Baba Buddha decided to make a hole in the wall so as not to go against the Guru's instruction.
Once inside they pleaded with the Guru to return to Goindwal Sahib as only he was their true beloved Guru and the Sikhs could not live without him. Guru Amar Das finally relented and returned with the Sikhs. The hole in the wall is still preserved today inside the Gurdwara Sahib. Gurdwara Sahib is situated on the Amritsar-Chaubal Road.
