NAGATORO: Easy one day trip from Tokyo (Saitama)
Nagatoro is a small but scenic town deep in the mountains of western Saitama Prefecture. Located about 20 minutes north of Chichibu by train, Nagatoro is a popular spot for Tokyo day trippers looking for hiking, river boat tours and wild water sports in largely unspoiled nature. The whole town of Nagatoro has been designated a prefectural nature park and preserve.

The Nagatoro Line Kudari river boat experience has been part of Nagatoro since 1915, and is one of the town's major attractions, bringing in 200,000 visitors a year. Ride a boat handled by a pair of skilled boatmen and view the gorgeous valley crafted by nature while cruising down fast rapids and gentle currents. Cancellations do occur in the event of bad weather.

Asami Reizō has two branches separated just by a single train stop.
The main branch, Kanasaki, is accessible from Kami-Nagatoro Station, and is by far the most popular branch. In Summer you can expect to wait between 2 to 3hrs to get in. The other branch, Hodosan, is accessible from Nagatoro Station. It can still get busy here but not to the extent of the main branch.

Hodosan Shrine in Nagatoro, Chichibu city, Saitama
**Deep into the mountains of Chichibu, Japan, 1000 meters in the air, sits Mitsumine Shrine. It's rare for its worship of the now-extinct Japanese wolf (ookami, オオカミ,狼) and dates back 1900 years. Worship of the animal deities protects one from misfortune. It is an important cultural spot as it has a mythically direct connection to the imperial family and is part of the story of legend Yamato Takeru, celebrated by the Japanese as an ancient unified of the old provinces.

Arakawa River & Mt. Hodo in Nagatoro
Yet again, another daytrip...this time, to the lovely Nagatoro!! The scenery was so picturesque. The boat ride was so relaxing and the hike through Mt. Hodo was stunning! We sadly didn't have time to check out the little petting zoo at the top of Mt. Hodo :( I guess I'll just have to go back!
