Sapporo Gokoku Shrine (Japan)
November 5, 2012
While not as celebrated as Hokkaido Shrine, Gokoku Shrine is a pretty Shrine located on handsomely kept grounds at the southern end of Nakajima Park. Its an easy walk from the city center and a convenient place to stop by for a taste of Shinto culture without commiting half a days time. Try selecting a Mikuji (Paper Fortune) from the box to find out if you'll be having a lucky year.

Shinto Shrine In Okitsu Japan
This video is part of a playlist documenting a fun, day-long outing to Okitsu Japan. This trip was made in an effort to try and discover the real-life location which may have inspired the famous Edo-period wood-block print artist Hiroshige Ando in making his print for the village of Okitsu. This famous print depicts a pair of hefty sumo wrestlers rounding a corner near the mouth of the Okitsu river. This print was include in the artist's famous print series titled The 53 Stages of the Tokaido. Click on the following link to see the playlist titled Searching For Hiroshige Ando.
Shinto is one of the two major religions of Japan (the other is Buddhism). Shinto is often considered to be the native religion of Japan, and is as old as Japan itself. The name Shinto means the way of the gods. Shinto is a pantheistic religion, in which many thousands of major and minor gods are thought to exist. The Japanese have built thousands of shrines (jinja) throughout the country to honor and worship these gods. Some shrines are huge and are devoted to important deities. Other shrines are small and may be easily missed when strolling along roads in the countryside.
Shinto gods are called kami. Kami are thought to have influence on human affairs, and for this reason many Japanese make regular pilgrimage to community shrines in order to offer prayers to local kami. The act of prayer involves approaching the shrine structure, passing through the gate-like torii, cleansing the hands and mouth with water and possibly ascending stairs to the main entrance of the shrine. Usually without entering the shrine the worshipper will throw some coins into a stone or wooden collection box and then rattle the suzu bell which is at the top of a long hemp rope. The worshiper grabs hold of the rope and shakes it back and forth causing the copper bell at the top to rattle. This is thought to get the attention of the shrine god. The worshipper then bows twice, claps his or her hands twice and then bows again. In addition, the worshipper may clasp their hands together in silent prayer. Shintoism and Buddhism have managed to find a comfortable coexistence in Japan. Evidence of this harmonious relationship is found in the fact that that most Japanese are married in a Shinto shrine, but buried by a Buddhist priest.

Traditional Japanese Music and Dance Inside Sengen Shrine 3
I accidentally came across this shrine (Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha) whilst walking around Fujinomiya City. The shrine was lit up by paper lanterns and was magical to see. The entertainment inside the shrine was free.

Chigo no Mai: Dancing in Worship of Mount Fuji | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
“Chigo no mai,” literally, “Dance of the Little Girls,” is a devotional event conducted annually on April 25 and July 28 as a part of festivals conducted at Kawaguchi Asama Shrine in the town of Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture. Young girls perform a series of dances: Gohei no mai (dance of the wands), Ōgi no mai (dance of the fans), Tsurugi no mai (dance of the swords), Happō no mai (eight-direction dance) and Miya-meguri (circuiting the shrine). These dances are performed with stylized elegance in front of a congregation of Fuji “kō” members—Fuji “kō” being groups of people who climb Mount Fuji as an act of worship. They are based on the tradition of kagura, the sacred dancing and music conducted at Shintō shrines.
Kawaguchi Asama Shrine was founded in the late ninth century with the aim of pacifying Mount Fuji (Fujisan) following an eruption. It is part of the World Heritage site “Fujisan—Sacred Place and Source of Artistic Inspiration” recognized by UNESCO in 2013.
