Gokurakuji —Temple #2
Some pilgrims rush a bit at Gokurakuji. It's temple #2, and the first ten are all pretty close together. People want to squeeze in as many temples as they can the first day. That's a pity, because there's a lot to see at Gokurakuji. First there's the garden, one of the most famous in Tokushima. Next there's the giant cedar tree. It's over a thousand years old. Temple records say it was planted by Kobo Daishi. Finally, there's a story about the little hill to the east of the garden. The story goes, Kobo Daishi carved the temple's main image, a statue of Amida Nyorai, but the light shining from the statue's eyes was so bright, it affected fishermen in the sea off Naruto, 15 kilometers to the east. Concerned for the fishermen, Kobo Daishi magically made the hill appear overnight. This blocked the light so the nighttime fishing fleet could be successful.

Not a vlog. Raw video filmed on GH5S during my 39 day, 2060km walk around Shikoku, Japan. The Shikoku Pilgrimage consists of 88 temples in which you follow the path of the founder of Esoteric Buddhism, Kōbō Daishi. One lap around this route spans approximately 1200km. There is also another route of 20 Bekkaku Temples that also loops around the island which make the distance closer to 1600km (without detours).

This is temple 2 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Gokurakuji is located in the capital of Tokushima. The temple was said to have been founded by Gyōgi in the 8th century but historical evidence seems to point to its construction during the Kamakura Period (13th century). According to legend, long ago, it was difficult for fishermen in Naruto Bay to catch enough fish to earn a living because the bright light from the honzon's halo reached all the way to the Bay and frightened the fish. To prevent this, the local fishermen built a small artificial hill between the bay and the Honzon image in order to block the light. The hill came to be known as the Sun Light Mountain (Nisshōzan).

History and origin of Gokurakuji temple
Kobo Daishi of 42 years old was recited from this place for 37 days, and it was repaired, although Hirohito Daishi (615 (815)) has been told that it is the opening base of Bodai Bosatsu. On Amida 's appeal day, Amitabha Nyorai appeared, so Daishi sculpted that figure and was made a Honjin. This Amitabha Narimasu is beautiful in respect, and the light that emanates has reached Nagahara off Nagahara far away. The fishermen said From the story that when it hinders fishing they built an artificial mountain in front of the main hall and shielded the light, Festival of Rizhao . After that, in the Tensho year (1573 - 92), it was destroyed by the warhead of the former parent of Choson Ekubabe, but the main hall was rebuilt with the aid of Mr. Mitsuhisa Hatosuka, the second year of Moshiji (1659).
Within the precincts
In the quiet premises surrounded by mountains on the Mikata, a garden that imagined a paradise garden spreads as it passes through the vermillion painted gates. There is a main temple in front of the climbing up 44 stairs steps. The back of the right is Daitsado, and this statue of Daishi is also called Yasashi Daishi. When Daishi prayed for the wife who only aborted, it was attributed to the fact that it was blessed with immediate childbirth, and it is said that there is an inspiration for safe prayers. Kobo Daishi The long-life cedar hand-planted is a spirit tree with a tree age of about 1200 years, a height of about 31 meters, and a circumference of about 6 meters. If touched it is said that it is not only home safety, it also awakens illness and longevity. It is designated as a natural monument of Naruto City. I would like to touch on the pilgrimage only to the big cedar that endured the Senko wind and snow.

Gokurakuji Dojo video w/music
My favorite spot in Japan, the stilt dojo over a lake, surrounded by bamboo, built next to a peaceful mountain temple. I spent almost 2 years doing martial arts there (kendo and iaido) and hanging out with some great friends.
It's a place perfect for meditation and exercise. Some of my favorite memories are from here. Enjoy some of the natural sounds, during the four seasons, and some of our martial arts attempts (bear in mind we were all beginners and our sensei was quite patient with our lack of skill).
