The Gol stave church is dendrochronologically dated to 1212. When the city built a new church around 1880, it was decided to demolish the old stave church. It was saved from destruction by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments, which bought the materials in order to re-erect the church elsewhere. It was acquired by King Oscar II, who financed its relocation and restoration as the central building of his private open-air museum near Oslo. The restoration, overseen by architect Waldemar Hansteen, was completed in 1885. In 1907 this early open-air museum, the world's first, was merged with the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, which now manages the stave church. The church, however, is still nominally the property of the reigning monarch.
In 1994, a modern replica has been erected in Gol as a tourist attraction in a theme park in downtown Gol. This replica is located some distance from the original site of the Mediaeval church. There is also a replica in the Scandinavian Heritage Park in Minot, North Dakota, USA.

The Gol Stave Church in Minot, North Dakota, USA is a replica of the Gol Stave Church originally from Gol, Hallingdal, Norway. The original 1200AD church is now located in the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History at Bygdøy in Oslo, Norway. A USA full size replica of the church is located in the North Dakota at the Scandinavian Heritage Park is a park located in Minot, North Dakota
Scandinavian Heritage Park features remembrances and replicas from each of the Scandinavian countries: Norway, Sweden and Denmark, as well as Finland and Iceland. The park was established during 1988 to celebrate and preserve Scandinavian heritage. The first building was dedicated October 9, 1990. The park is supported by the Scandinavian Heritage Association and Norsk Høstfest both of which have offices at the park.
The Gol Stave Church Museum in the Scandinavian Heritage Park in Minot was constructed by Straight River Log Homes of Park Rapids, Minnesota under the careful and dedicated supervision of Myron D. Peterson, M.D., a past president of the Scandinavian Heritage Association and chairman of the Gol Stave Church committee. Additionally, it was because of the exemplary monetary support of D. Peterson and his wife, Gail, that others were inspired to help fund this magnificent structure which will display Scandanivan heritage for decades.

I'm in Gol, Norway!
For my first part if Spring Break, I went and visited a friend in the small town if Gol, Norway. Even though there wasn't a lot to do, we still made it fun. Now it's off to Trondheim!

Gol is a municipality in Buskerud county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Hallingdal. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Gol. Gol was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The area of Hemsedal was separated from Gol in 1897 to become a separate municipality.
The municipality of Gol is bordered to the north by the municipality of Nord-Aurdal (in Oppland county), to the east by Sør-Aurdal (in Oppland county), to the south by Nes, and to the west by Ål and Hemsedal.

Passing through Gol, Hallingdal, Norway
A brief video, and a pretty boring one, of a car ride through Gol in Hallingdal in Norway. I'm uploading it because it shows - towards the end - the copy of the famous stave church in this district. The original is at the Folk Museum in Oslo - I've posted a video of that previously. It came from this district, but was given to King Oscar II as a gift, pulled apart and put back up in Oslo in what later became the Museum. A copy was built at put up here at Gol ... although not on the original location. As you see it's in rather a strange spot, not very idyllic ... ! :-D
I also posted the video to show the difference between the highlands and the relative lowlands in this country. This was filmed the same weekend as the previous video I posted - the first weekend of May 2011 - but as you see, down in Gol the trees had gotten so much further in their greening. Fascinating. :-)

A stave church is a medieval wooden Christian church building once common in north-western Europe. The name derives from the building's structure of post and lintel construction, a type of timber framing where the load-bearing ore-pine posts are called stafr in Old Norse . Two related church building types also named for their structural elements, the post church and palisade church, are often called 'stave churches'. Originally much more widespread, most of the surviving stave churches are in Norway. The only remaining medieval stave churches outside Norway are those of circa 1500 at Hedared in Sweden and one Norwegian stave church relocated in 1842 to the outskirts of Krummhübel, Germany, now Karpacz in the Karkonosze mountains of Poland....

Norway - Borgund stavkirke (stave church)
Borgund dates back to the end of the 12th century. It had a strategic location in Sogn og Fjordane County on the old road connecting the eastern and western parts of Norway. This is an absolutely stunning beauty. It is the best preserved of all stave churches and it looks like a stave church should.
