Gola Rainforest National Park in Kenema, Sierra Leone
The Gola Rainforest National Park Programme is currently developing a REDD project in consultation with local communities and other stakeholders. This project is being developed by the collaborating partners with the full involvement of local communities and aims to be validated under the Verified Carbon Standards and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance standards.
Covering an area of 71,070 ha, GRNP is characterized by extensive rolling hills cloaked in evergreen and semi-deciduous forest divided into three blocks – Gola North, Central and South. The park comprises the largest remaining area of intact, lowland rainforest in Sierra Leone and is a significant remnant of the once vast Upper Guinea Forest belt of West Africa, a global biodiversity ‘hotspot’ and a priority for international conservation efforts. Botanical assessments have identified close to 1,000 plant species, half of which are endemic to the Upper Guinea Forest ecosystem. The forests of the GRNP have largely remained intact in spite of sporadic logging and a decade of civil war during the 1990s. Regenerating secondary forest (in old logging areas) is largely confined to the edges of the park with the core interior zone supporting high, primary forest and abundant wildlife. Current satellite imagery shows the park as an ‘island of green’ in a largely agricultural landscape, confirming that the park’s forests are continuing to be effectively protected.
Of the 899 species of plant that are known to occur in the park, 232 are tree species. The most common family is identified as Leguminosae, with common species such as Cynometra leonensis and Brachystegia leonensis. However, the most dominant tree species is Heritiera.
IUCN classification for plants is incomplete. Nonetheless, at least 21 threatened species listed by IUCN have been recorded recently including one, Tieghemella heckelii, that is classified as Endangered and 20 classified as Vulnerable. Poorter et al classified 278 woody plants in the Upper Guinea forests as rare or threatened based on extent of distribution and threats from human exploitation. Of these, 67 have been recorded in the park.

After yesterday's amazing journey into Sierra Leone on a motorcycle, I got the chance to explore Outamba-Kilimi National Park a little bit today. We trekked through the forest almost the entire day searching for forest elephants as well as other animals. Did we spot anything? Gotta watch to find out!

Lowland Bongo in Gola Forest in SE Sierra Leone Feb 23, 2014
This Lowland Bongo calf stood on the footpath near Mahoi river bridge app. 7 km off Sileti substation in Gola East in SE Sierra Leone. To my great surprise it approached me instead of running away which gave me a minut to get the old pocket camera out of the backpack. I did not see its mother arround but flushed a larger mammal 100-200m away from the Bingo kid which might have been.

Conservation of Western Area National Park - a forgotten promise?
The Western Area National Park is a forest reserve in Sierra Leone that still holds one of the last strongholds of intact forest in the country and in the Guinean Forests of West Africa Hotspot. The park is rich in diverse species and is the home of many birds and wild animals; but many are disappearing as pressure on land has caused people to encroach the reserve in search of land for building and farming. Without strict regulation, it is becoming harder to preserve the area’s rich biodiversity.
