Check out the sights and sounds from beautiful Gold Coast, Queensland. We saw stunning views from Surfers Paradise, Main Beach, and the tip of the Cock Rock during some much-needed father son bonding time after half a year of study abroad in Australia.

My first of two semesters studying abroad in Melbourne is done, so during my break my parents decided to take a summer break of their own and travel to Australia to go around the country for a couple weeks.
After a few days exploring Sydney with my mom, my dad and I flew to Gold Coast for a few days of relaxing on the beach and some father-son bonding time.
Once our flight landed, we checked into our accommodation in Surfers Paradise which had a really cool and relaxing poolside and was right in the middle of things near Cavill Avenue.
Being so close to the beach, we were eager to get out and explore. We started by walking down Cavill Avenue to take in the sights and sounds around Surfers Paradise on our way to the beach.
Walking through Surfers Paradise reminded me a lot of Florida. There were lots of shops and people wandering around, and although the area had a touristy feel to it I still found it really nice. Despite it being winter in Australia, the beach was still beautiful and warm (by Canadian standards at least).
My dad and I didn’t get into the water, but just being in the sun, on the sand, and in sunny Queensland was a very welcome change from the rainy Melbourne winter that we had left days earlier.
After getting some lunch on the boardwalk at Surfers Paradise, we headed down to Main Beach for the second part of our day. I personally liked Main Beach a lot more than the beach at Surfers. Main Beach was definitely bigger, a lot less crowded, and gave us some stunning views of the coastline down the Gold Coast.
The next day we went for a small hike Burleigh Head National Park, and the panoramic views that we got from the top of the hill there were really remarkable. The sun was beating down on us, and were able to see the entire beach all along the coast.
The most memorable part of the trip for me was walking on the Cock Rock in Burleigh Head. As someone who’s scared of heights it was definitely a nerve-racking experience for me, as you can probably see.
Looking back on it I’m really happy that I pushed my comfort zone and got out there because the ocean lookout was spectacular and looking down at the huge drop into rocks that was just below me was even cooler (although it was also incredibly scary for me).
That night my dad and I watched the sunset over a Gold Coast harbour then headed back to our hotel to get some rest and prepare for the next flight on our adventure around Australia and New Zealand.

WET ‘N’ WILD GOLD COAST AUSTRALIA Oxenford, Queensland
Wet'n'Wild Gold Coast is a water park situated in Oxenford, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, owned and operated by Village Roadshow Theme Parks. In 2009, the park received 1,095,000 visitors ranking it first in Australia and eighth in the world. Wet'n'Wild Gold Coast is located adjacent to Warner Bros. Movie World, a movie-related park also owned by Village Roadshow Theme Parks. The park remains open all year with all of the pools and slides heated during the winter months. It is one of seven water parks operating under the Wet'n'Wild brand globally.
Wet'n'Wild Gold Coast opened on 30 September 1984 as Cade's County Waterpark. The Herringe group of companies developed the park at a cost of A$18 million. The name was later changed to Cade's County Wet'n'Wild, then simply Wet'n'Wild in 1987 after a licensing agreement was reached with chain of Wet 'n Wild water parks overseas. Under ownership of Village Roadshow Theme Parks, the park changed its name to Wet'n'Wild Water World to match the related Sea World and Warner Bros. Movie World theme parks. In 2013, to distinguish the park from Wet'n'Wild Sydney, the park's name was changed to Wet'n'Wild Gold Coast.
Scenes set at a water park (fictionally called Splash Planet) in The Inbetweeners 2, a 2014 British comedy film, were filmed at the park.

The Plan
We’ll commence on the southern end of Surfers Paradise Beach and head north taking in Narrowneck Beach and Main Beach until the commencement of the ’Spit’. Along the way we will head up onto The Esplanade pathway (Gold Coast Oceanway) in front of Cavill Avenue before returning to the beach. When we reach the ‘Spit’ area we will head up onto the shoreline path heading south through Hollindale Park, pass the Southport Surf Life Saving Club, and Main Beach Parade at Narrowneck. We’ll then return to the beach finishing near our start location.
As well as the beautiful beach on a perfect morning, some points of interest to look out for;
03:20 running past Cavill Avenue - the centre of fun and entertainment at Surfers Paradise.
20:00 Hollindale Park - the start / finish of the Main Beach Parkrun; the first Parkrun group in Australia. Parkrunning is huge in Australia!
25:00 The heritage buildings of Southport surf Life Saving Club, established in 1924.
26:50 Cable Street - where in 1902 the communication cable between America and Australia came ashore.
28:00 Main Beach Parade at Narrow neck used for numerous entertainment and sporting events. Look out for the black markings on the roadway. They form the ‘chicane’ aspect of the back straight for the Gold Coast 600 Supercar motor racing event. There are not many motor sport events where you can walk off the beach with your surfboard and attend! The event is held in October each year.
Both Main Beach Parade and The Esplanade form the majority of the Internationally ranked Gold Coast Marathon held in July each year (winter). It is rated as a flat, fast course.

Walking on a sunny weekend through Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast, Australia, the walk takes you from First Avenue, through to Surfers Paradise Beach, Orchid and Cavill Avenue, Budds Beach and then back into surfers via the esplanade.
Sorry for the high wind noise in places, while it wasn't an extremely windy day, the wind sometimes funnels between the high rises which can make it sound worse then it is.
