The temple is composed of five caves, which have been converted into shrine rooms. The caves, built at the base of a 150m high rock during the Anuradhapura (1st century BC to 993 AD) and Polonnaruwa times (1073 to 1250), are by far the most impressive of the many cave temples found in Sri Lanka. Major caves are the Cave of the Divine King, Cave of the Great Kings and the Great New Monastery.

SIGIRIYA & DAMBULLA CAVE TEMPLES: 48 HOURS EXPLORING THE CULTURAL TRIANGLE SRI LANKA
Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle has an embarrassment of religious and cultural riches, as well as staggering scenic beauty, making it an essential stop on most Sri Lanka travel itineraries. Its standout sites though are the stunning Sigiriya rock fortress and the Dambulla Cave Temples.
Helpfully, the close proximity of sites means it a boon for the time-stretched traveller. In just 48 hours you can take in both these treasures and two of the country's most unforgettable experiences.
Get the full story and read our 48-hour guide to The Cultural Triangle -
including what to see, where to go and where to stay - here:
I spot it first from the jeep – an ancient volcanic outcrop, rising proudly from this island’s central plains in the heart of what is known here as the ‘Cultural Triangle’. This is a region with an embarrassment of religious and cultural riches, as well as staggering scenic beauty, making it an essential stop on most Sri Lanka travel itineraries. Helpfully, the close proximity of sites means it a boon for the time-stretched traveller. In just 48 hours you can take in some of the country’s most unforgettable experiences.
Yet few people arrive prepared for Sigiriya or ‘Lion Rock’, the ancient rock fortress and perhaps Sri Lanka’s most arresting sight. Standing at the edge of water gardens, which form the formal entrance to its foothills, its vertical sides soar up, filling my vision. From here I can see little of what lies on its summit, but the water gardens provide tantalising clues. Serene and landscaped they also hide some of this rock’s secrets and engineering wonders in plain sight. As we walk past some old fountains, our guide from the local Jetwing Lake hotel – Bandara – drops an amazing fact: these were fed by underground pipework that ran from the very top of the rock to where we are standing, hundreds of meters in total. Even more impressive is that, in rainy season, they still work. This perfect union of form and function, of art and science, sums up much of what makes this place both so beguiling. Small wonder it is an official UNESCO World Heritage site and, albeit less officially, known as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’.

We arrived a little too soon at 6.30 a.m. and had to wake up the
monk at the rear entrance. This way up is all steps but probably
easier than a steep winding path directly behind the Golden Temple, which most people use. You are treated to incredible views as you climb the steps. In order to enter the temple you need to bring something to cover your legs, long pants or a sarong. Your shoes will be kept on a rack outside and a small fee will be chargeable to retrieve them.
Watch out for the many monkey's eager to steal things.

Experience Sri Lanka: Dambulla Cave Temple
You know Sri Lanka is home to some incredible temples, but which ones do you absolutely have to visit? The answer, or at least one answer, is Dambulla Cave Temple. No trip to Sri Lanka is complete without thoroughly exploring this ancient structure, and we’re here to prove it.
As the spiritual centre for Buddhists in Sri Lanka, the Dambulla Cave Temple is a must-visit for travellers looking to find some inner peace. Or, since the structure is also over two thousand years old, it’s a great chance to soak up some history and learn more about the rich culture of Sri Lanka! The temple complex offers something for everyone, be they photographers, explorers, or spiritualists.
The Dambulla Cave Temple is home to three major caves and over one hundred and fifty statues of Buddha, each uniquely posed and vibrantly painted. Time truly stands still in the caves, as the darkness preserves the paint and other decorations.
Make sure to follow our tips for exploring these caves: respecting the traditions and customs of the temple by dressing modestly is extremely important when visiting a place with religious significance such as Dambulla Cave Temple. Snap pictures of the temple monkeys, but be careful: they’re known to have sticky fingers!
We know you won’t be able to resist the allure of the Dambulla Cave Temple for much longer, and why should you? Sri Lanka is practically begging for you to visit. Maybe it’s time for you to start planning your own adventure!

Dambulla, Sri Lanka
Pouring rain prevented our visit to Sigiriya, but we made the most of it with a day at the Dambulla Cave Temple (aka. Dambulla Rajamaha Viharaya, Dambulla Rock Temple). The caves were warm, dry, quiet, and well maintained. The murals are lovely and the view is stunning. There are plenty of monkeys disinterested by humans. With an entrance fee half the price of most historical sites, it's a no brainer.
