MERRY CHINA-MAS | Living in China: VLOG 37
I'm an American living in China who doesn't speak Chinese. Here's a walk in my shoes.
traffic
Here is a teaser for Traffic, an interactive gallery installation framework that uses computer vision to track body position within the camera frame.
Here you can see three layers of video:
1. The camera's input
2. The computer vision identification of blobs (green circles)
3. Grey circles that represent average blob position on an x/y axis. The grey identification points are what actually modulate the sound output.
In this example, perhaps for a four-channel sound installation, body position in the frame corresponds to the volume of a particular sound clip.
Tracking can be tricky, at the moment Traffic works best when there are less than 4 people in the frame. Notice that the grey identification points are only active if there are enough blobs, or people, in the frame. If there are no people, and no blobs are detected, the identification points become inactive, and there is no modulation of the output.
I recorded this test footage at the Golden Eagle mall in Kunming, China.

LEAD IN:
Chinese communities are preparing to celebrate the Chinese New Year on February 7.
2008 is the 'Year of the Rat' in the traditional Chinese calendar.
Although rats are not everybody's favourite animals, the rodent's meat is considered, at least by some, a delicacy in rural Vietnam.
STORYLINE:
As the 'Year of the Rat' approaches, what better way to celebrate Chinese New Year than by eating the furry rodent?
Already the streets of the Vietnamese capital are teeming with rat themed decorations.
The 'Year of the Rat' is traditionally associated with vitality and prosperity.
In village of Dinh Bang, just outside Hanoi, rat meat has been eaten for centuries.
Nguyen Tien Phat is a man who for years has been making a living from selling the meat.
He's a real life rat catcher.
Nguyen Tien Phat goes on hunting trips once or twice a week in a town 80 kilometres (49 miles) away from his home.
With four hours of hunting at night, he catches between 40 to 60 rats.
Lending a helping hand is his wife Nguyen Thi Le.

Knife Rampage in China Kills 29
KUNMING, China—Separatists are being blamed for a murderous knife attack late Saturday that killed 29 people and wounded 143 at a southern-China train station. These Xinjiang separatist forces are reportedly from China's far-west region. Authorities have vowed a harsh crackdown on the rebels. Police fatally shot four of the assailants—putting the overall death toll at 33. One other separatist was reportedly captured after the attack in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province. But as of Sunday, authorities were still searching for at least five more of the attackers, who were all dressed in black. According to state media, two of the assailants were women, including the one detained and one of those slain. The Xinjiang region is home to a long-simmering rebellion against Chinese rule. The rebels are said to be members of the Muslim Uighur population.

Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan - Trekking to the SPECTACULAR Monastery on a Cliff! (Final Day in Bhutan)
Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan is one of the most famous attractions, and the beauty is mind-blowing!
►Subscribe for more videos:
On Day 19 of our food and travel trip to Bhutan, we dedicated the entire day to trekking to Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan (Paro Taktsang in Bhutanese Dzongkha), which sits literally on the edge of a cliff. The hike takes about 3 - 4 hours or so, and since I wanted to beat the main crowds, my wife and I left from the hotel quite early to get a head start. It worked out quite well, because we were some of the only people on the trail that early in the morning. The fresh air was amazing. We wound our way along the trail, and soon we could get amazing views of Tiger’s Nest hidden in the clouds and on the side of the cliff.
The trail, although steep, isn’t really dangerous in any parts, as long as you keep your eye on the trail and don’t try to get too close to the edge. At the top of Tiger’s Nest Monastery they don’t allow any photography, so you have to check in your bag. We walked around the monastery for a little while, ate some snacks, and then headed down.
Despite Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan being one of the most famous attractions and icons of Bhutan, it really is spectacular.

David Califa:
Sri Panwa:
I was invited by my great food friend David ( with Sir Panwa hotel in Phuket to come for one of the greatest food pop-ups ever in Thailand. The first night we had sushi by Master Chef Hiroyuki Sato, and it was by far the most amazing sushi meal omakase experience I’ve ever had. The next night was Kobe beef night, and along with a selection of the best wagyu cuts, the highlight of the night was a giant hunk of Kobe Beef A5, the top of the best.
But before the Kobe beef evening started, we first spent some time during the day at Sri Panwa. I took a few swims, had breakfast, and then for lunch we went into Phuket town with David and the chefs, and at the legendary Raya Restaurant. The food is quite good, and you’ll find Phuket style southern Thai food there.
Wagyu Mafia - Wagyu Mafia were the stars of the event. And they are originally Kobe beef dealers, so they know the best cuts of beef and the best farmers. Now they have a members restaurants in Tokyo as well, but still deal in the best wagyu beef. They brought a selection of wagyu beef from Japan including a $3000 (that’s the wholesale price, probably lots more at a restaurant), Kobe beef A5 (which is the best of the best) ribeye. It was one of the most insanely delicious things I’ve ever tasted in my life.
Here’s our entire menu of courses that we at at the Wagyu Mafia event at Sri Panwa:
Homemade beef jerky (Ozaki Beef A5 BMS8)
Kotecchan satay stick grill
Ozaki beef krapao (A5 BMS8)
Ozaki beef tendon tom yum (A5 BMS8)
Ozaki beef nigiri sushi
Tako yaki with wagyu
Wagyu grill
Kobe beef ribeye (Kobe Beef A5 BMS11)
Hakata style ramen
Mango rice cake
Wagyu tom yum
It was truly a beef meal that will create a lifetime memory!
Thank you to Wagyu Mafia, David, Khun Wan, and everyone from Sri Panwa hotel for organizing this event and for inviting me to attend.
DISCLOSURE: I was not paid to make this video. But I was invited to attend this event at Sri Panwa, and I did not pay for my stay or for the meal.
