Golden Ears Bridge - first crossing
Complete with eagles and anti-suicide fish trap fences Golden Ears Bridge spans the mighty Fraser River from Walnut Grove (Surrey) to Pitt Meadows, replacing the Albion Ferry crossing at Fort Langley.
Construction began in June 2006 and the bridge opened on June 19, 2009; The design theme also recognizes First Nations and their relationship to the land through the inclusion of fish trap fences and specially designed lanterns along the roadway. The eagle was chosen as a symbol for the bridge, and is displayed on on the bridge towers, as well as on project signs, in concrete etchings on some ramps, and at the project gateways in Surrey and Pitt Meadows.
The Golden Ears peaks look down on the bridge from the north. There are several explanations for the origin of the term Golden Ears. By one local account, Golden Ears is a modification of Golden Aeries, referring to the nests of the eagles that thrive on Canadas Pacific coast.
