Ethiopia: The Diplomatic Capital of Africa
Addis Ababa is the diplomatic capital of Africa, with 120 foreign embassies and diplomatic missions, plus the headquarters of the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
A growing number of international standard hotels, including the Hilton, Sheraton, Radisson Blue, Golden Tulip, Marriott and Ramada, an ever-improving infrastructure, a hub airport and world-class conference venues at the AU, the UNECA and the Millennium Hall, make Addis Ababa a destination of choice for meetings, conferences and exhibitions.
Outside of Addis Ababa, cities such as Mekele, Bahir Dar, Hawassa, Dire Dawa, Bishoftu and Adama offer excellent venues and facilities for meetings.
Make time to visit Ethiopia, and discover for yourself the origins of so much history and culture - still vibrantly alive in a landscape of dramatic beauty.

Ethiopian Treasures and artefacts visited by Abune Aregawi at V & A

Victoria and Albert Museum director says artefacts could be sent to Africa on long-term loan
Mark Brown
Treasures including a gold crown and a royal wedding dress, which were taken from Ethiopia by the British 150 years ago, could be returned to Africa by the Victoria and Albert Musuem on long-term loan.
Ethiopia lodged a formal restitution claim in 2007 for hundreds of important and beautiful manuscripts and artefacts being held by various British institutions, all plundered after the 1868 capture of Maqdala, the mountain capital of Emperor Tewodros II in what was then Abyssinia.
That request has been refused. But in the run-up to a Maqdala display opening this week at the V&A, a compromise has been offered by the museum’s director, Tristram Hunt, who said: “The speediest way, if Ethiopia wanted to have these items on display, is a long-term loan … that would be the easiest way to manage it.”
The offer is significant given the pledge by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, that the return of African artefacts would be a “top priority” for his administration.

The loan proposal has been welcomed by the Ethiopian state and campaigners, but Hunt said it was a complex debate and it was important not to extrapolate a “blanket policy”.
He told the Guardian: “You have to take it item by item and you have to take it history by history. Once you unpick the histories of the collections it becomes a great deal more complicated and challenging.” (The Guardian)

Ethiopia - Addis Ababa - Entoto - Maryam Chuch ኢትዮጵያ አዲስ አበባ
A little look up and around Entoto. Just north of Addis Ababa.
Ethiopia Addis Ababa Entoto Maryam Chuch
Emperor Menelik II is regarded by many as one of the greatest Ethiopians of all time. He was often, simultaneously soldier, politician, king, raconteur and some-time brick-layer. This can be seen at the church of Maryam (St. Mary) on Entoto Mountain, in which he has taken part in the building work.
The great modernizer of Ethiopia Menelik was born on 17 August 1844 in Ankober. He would have turned 165 today. Befitting the occasion, this weekend I set out to explore Entoto Mariam Church, the Emperor Menelik and Empress Taitu Memorial museum and former palace located in the church's very compound.
For anyone who wishes to trace Atse Menelik's legacy, visiting the church is important as it was here that Menelik was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia in November 1889, and his image hangs on its walls. The monarch himself personally played the leading role in establishing the church as part of his effort to build up his new capital Addis Ababa which in English meant New Flower. Today looking at it, the area's image is partly defined by its past, the church's and the palace's buildings representing 125 years history.
Taxi is available to go Entoto Maryam and the road from Shiro Meda to Gusqaum and Entoto Maryam isn't in bad shape. However, given the speed of change in other parts of the city, the area doesn't seem to have changed much from the Emperor's time. It is a sad, stagnant part of the city.
The outside building of the museum isn't very attractive either and in fact it looks more like a conservation unit than a museum. It was only opened in 1987, yet looks old.
The inside is rich with the Emperor's and his consort queen Empress Taitu's furniture, items, photographs, textiles and even rifle used in the battle of Adwa.
The museum grants the visitor passage, as well, to an enchanting moment in a far-off place or time. Gifts, bequests, purchases, trades, and expeditions have filled this reservoir to the brim.
Among items of particular interest are mirror given by Queen Victoria for Empress Taitu in 1878, Dirsane Mikaele used by the Emperor Menelik, gold tainted clock given to Menelik from France, Icon of St. Mary given from the Russia, Negarit (communication drum) used to call for war, photographs of the Entoto Maryam church at the inauguration day, the Emperor's bed used for relaxing, a fancy robe worn by the Menelik's when he was crowned Emperor, an Indian made plate used for Holy communion.

Multinational coffee companies now rule our shopping malls and supermarkets and dominate an industry worth over $80 billion. But what price are African farmers paying for the price of our coffee?
THE CO-OP: Tadesse Meskela is a man on a mission: to save 74,000 struggling Ethiopian coffee farmers from bankruptcy. Tadesse is manager of the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union. Globally two billion cups of coffee are drunk every day. But Ethiopian coffee farmers get a tiny fraction of the price paid for a cup of coffee by the western consumer.
THE MULTINATIONALS: Four multinational companies dominate the world coffee market - Kraft, Nestle, Proctor & Gamble and Sara Lee - and giant coffee shop chain Starbucks is making big money from its customers. But life in Sidama, Ethiopia, from which the US multinational gets its coffee, is grim. A famine is in progress, and the low price of coffee is making people poorer.
FAIR TRADE: Meanwhile co-op manager Tadesse is in London putting the case for fair-traded coffee. But competition for space on the supermarket shelves is intense. Developing world countries argue the rules of global trade are biased against them, and bodies like the World Trade Organisation hold out little hope of change.
DVD EXTRAS include the full uncut 78 minute film, background information on the coffee trade, and interviews with the directors of the film.

One of the highlights of my travels in Ethiopia was observing the Hamadryas Baboons on a cliffside near the Filwuha hot springs. Awash National Park also has 473 different species of birds. This area is located approximately 250k from Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
