Rye & East Sussex, England // September 2018
For a relaxing weekend away, we decided to head to the south coast of England and explore the quaint town of Rye. Hopping in the car in London and driving down, we stopped in Dungeness and spent some time in Rye Harbour. To end off our first day, we took in golden hour and sunset from the Camber Sands. Altogether, East Sussex made for the perfect escape from the city.

Here's England by William Shakespeare composed by Charles Hubert Hastings Parry and lyricist Esme Howerd sung by the great Welsh Tenor David Lloyd from a 78 rpm shellac record circa 1941/42.
David George Lloyd (6 April 1912 – 27 March 1969) was a Welsh singer. Lloyd, a tenor, was noted for being one of the first Welsh solo singers to seek a broader audience beyond Wales, in the concert halls and recording studios of England, mainland Europe, and North America.
During his lifetime, Lloyd was renowned in opera, oratorio, and in recital, in particular for his performances of Verdi and Mozart. As a Welshman, however, he is remembered most for his renditions of the hymns and folk songs of his native land.

M/S of two young boys David and John Hume sat with Mrs Elizabeth Dick. She shows them a solid gold watch, part of the treasure of Captain Kidd which she inherited from Hubert Palmer. C/U mechanisms of the watch. She then hands them some pieces of eight. C/U's of a split coin used for carrying secret messages. M/S as they open the original treasure chest and examine the pistols inside, one has notches to show how many kills have been made. Elizabeth turns it around to show the name 'Calico Jack'. She demonstrates how all the levers work on the chest. C/U as they open another treasure chest, and take out a model of a skull attached to a bible. M/S of secret drawer which contains a real treasure map. Camera pans across the rest of the treasure to a portrait of Captain Kidd when he was a boy. C/U inscription of his name on the chest.

Gold Beating (1950-1959)
Title reads: British Instructional Films present Gold Beating.
Location of events unknown.
Two men work with gold. Man measures raw gold from a flat dish into a beaker. A beaker containing raw material is carried to a small kiln. Intertitle reads: Melting. A lid is placed on the top of the kiln. Beaker is brought out of kiln using metal tongs. Intertitle reads: Casting. The molten liquid is poured into a mould to make an ingot. The ingot is turned out of the mould and taken to a press. Intertitle reads: Rolling. The ingot is passed through the press several times. We see this in C/U. More pressure is gradually applied to flatten the ingot. Intertitle reads: After 4 hours. It becomes thin and soft, like golden ribbon. This is carried off in a blanket.
Intertitle reads: Beating. Top shot of men at work pounding gold with hammers. Another man is doing close work with gold leaf. He places small squares of gold leaf in between brown paper with tweezers. This is then wrapped up and pounded with a large wooden hammer. We see this in C/U. The package is unwrapped and we see that the small squares have been flattened and stretched to twice their size within the package.
Intertitle reads: The leaf is cut and beaten again. Long work bench where many women do very close work with the gold leaf. A female supervisor looks at their work. They are putting sheets of gold leaf in between layers of paper. This is done with tweezers and with the aid of a puff of breath to flatten the very thin leaves of gold. The edges of the squares are trimmed. C/Us of this process. Small squares are cut from the larger squares and inserted between squares of paper.

Gold Beating: How Gold Leaf Is Made, with John Hastings
In 1820, John Hastings’ great grandfather founded Hastings and Company, a gold leaf manufacturing company in Philadelphia. It went on to become the largest gold leaf manufacturing company in America, lasting nearly 150 years. In this illustrated talk, Hastings will describe the age-old craft and all the traditions, methods, and surprising facts surrounding it–for example, it takes one ounce of gold to make 175 square feet of gold leaf. Hastings will also discuss gold beating in Japan and Burma, various uses of gold leaf, and why the market for gold leaf collapsed, and he will show an 80-year-old film about gold beating.
John Hastings was the fourth generation to run his family’s business, Hastings & Co., which manufactured gold leaf in Philadelphia for 148 years. After the business closed in 1968, he spent twenty years at the archeological museum of the University of Pennsylvania, developing computer databases for archaeology, and also working on digs in France, India, and Tunisia. He moved to the Bay Area in 2001 and lives in Orinda. In recent years he has written several books about gold leaf and his family’s genealogy.
