The Golden Hind , Brixham , Devon.
The Golden Hind at Brixham is a full sized replica of one of the most iconic ships from the age of exploration being a feature of this picturesque harbour since 1964 and has a long history of screen appearances in Film, Television drama, Documentary and even children's programs.
Sir Francis Drake : Soldier, Seaman, Politician and Engineer is best remembered as an explorer. In his most famous ship, The Golden Hind, he became the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe in an epic expedition of plunder and discovery (1577-1580).
The hardship endured in overcrowded and primitive quarters is unbelievable. Only 56 men survived with Drake, returning 3 years later with a vast cargo of treasure ( the Queens share alone was more than the countries national debt). 'El Draco' became one of the most famous men in Western Europe and was feared and reviled by the Spanish. Drake was duly knighted onboard. The ship was home to Drake and his crew of 70 for almost 3 years.
After two years of devoted work, Golden Hinde II was officially launched from the J. Hinks & Son shipyard by the Countess of Devon on 5th April 1973.
From Winter 1974 to Spring 1975 the ship sailed from Plymouth to San Francisco to commemorate the upcoming 400th anniversary of Francis Drake's discovery of Nova Albion in North America in 1579.
In 1979 Golden Hinde II crossed the Pacific to Japan to film the TV series Shogun starring Richard Chamberlain and John Rys-Davies.
After sailing back to Britain via the Suez Canal, in 1980 Golden Hinde II was the centrepiece for the 400th anniversary celebrations of the completion of Francis Drake's circumnavigation in Plymouth. While there filming was conducted for Drake's Venture starring the late John Thaw for Westward Television.
After a tour of Britain and Ireland, Golden Hinde II sailed to Canada to appear in Expo '86, and a year later began a four-year expedition along the East and West Coasts of North America, returning to the UK in 1991.

A tour of the London replica – Golden Hinde:
A full-size reconstruction of the ship Golden Hinde was built by traditional methods in Appledore, Devon and launched in 1973. Golden Hinde was the result of three years research and construction. Since then, she has travelled more than 140,000 miles (225,000 km). She sailed from Plymouth on her maiden voyage in late 1974, arriving on 8 May 1975 in San Francisco. In 1979, she sailed to Japan to make the movie Shogun, after which she returned to the UK having completed a circumnavigation. Between 1981 and 1984, she was berthed in England and was established as an educational museum. In 1984–85, she sailed around the British Isles and then crossed the Atlantic to St Thomas in the Caribbean. In 1986, she passed through the Panama Canal to sail on to Vancouver, where she was the main attraction in the Marine Plaza at Expo86. In 1987, she began a tour of US coastal cities, spending two years on the Pacific coast. In late 1988, she passed back through the Panama Canal to continue port visits on the Gulf and east coasts of the USA. In 1992, she returned home to the UK and spent the next four years visiting ports in Europe. Since 1996, she has been berthed at St Mary Overie Dock, in Bankside, Southwark, London, where she is open to the public and hosts a range of educational programmes.
The Real Golden Hinde:
Golden Hind was an English galleon best known for her privateering circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580, captained by Sir Francis Drake. She was originally known as Pelican, but was renamed by Drake mid-voyage in 1578, in honour of his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose crest was a golden 'hind' (a female red deer). Hatton was one of the principal sponsors of Drake's world voyage.
History:
Queen Elizabeth I partly sponsored Sir Francis Drake as the leader of an expedition intended to pass around South America through the Strait of Magellan and to explore the coast that lay beyond. The queen's support was advantageous; Drake had official approval to benefit himself and the queen, as well as to cause the maximum damage to the Spaniards. This eventually culminated in the Anglo–Spanish War. Before setting sail, Drake met the queen face-to-face for the first time and she said to him, We would gladly be revenged on the King of Spain for divers injuries that we have received.
The explicit object was to find out places meet to have traffic. Drake, however, acted as a privateer, with unofficial support from Queen Elizabeth. She is described as a mid-16th-century warship during the transition from the carrack to the galleon, and displaced about 100 tons.He first named his flagship Pelican, but renamed her Golden Hind on 20 August 1578 to honour his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose family crest was a golden hind. He set sail in December 1577 with five small ships, manned by 164 men, and reached the Brazilian coast in early 1578.
On 1 March 1579, now in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Ecuador, Golden Hind challenged and captured the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. This galleon had the largest treasure captured to that date: over 360,000 pesos (equivalent to around £480m in 2017).The treasure took six days to transship and included 26 tons of silver, half a ton of gold, porcelain, jewellery, coins, and jewels. After Drake's circumnavigation, Golden Hind was maintained for public exhibition at the dockyard at Deptford, London. The ship remained there from 1580 to around 1650, 45 years after Queen Elizabeth had died, before the ship eventually rotted away and was broken up. In 1668, the keeper of the stores at Deptford, John Davies of Camberwell, had the best remaining timber of Golden Hind made into a chair which was presented to the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford, where it remains.A table, known as the cupboard, in the Middle Temple Hall, London is also reputed to have been made from the wood of Golden Hind. Upon the cupboard is placed the roll of members of Middle Temple, which new members sign when they are called to the Bar. The ship's lantern was hung in the vestibule of Middle Temple Hall, but was destroyed during the Second World War.

Jon Danzig narrates: 'The Golden Hinde'
Jon Danzig edited and narrated this video extracted from 'Drakes Venture', starring John Thaw as Sir Francis Drake, to promote the replica of the Golden Hinde treasure ship.
That film featured the full scale replica of The Golden Hinde, which later sailed around the USA as a floating educational museum. My video was shown to thousands of visitors as part of their tour of the great ship.
The feature film, Drakes Venture, has only ever been broadcast twice on TV -- once in the UK in 1980, and once in the USA in 1983. It's not even available on DVD, which is a great shame, as the full length film is a masterpiece and historically accurate. Unfortunately, the film was Westward Television's last production before it lost its TV franchise -- and the film seems to have been lost with it.
The replica of The Golden Hinde featured in the video is now permanently docked on the River Thames in London, where it is a major tourist attraction. More details at
New: a higher quality of this film will be uploaded soon.

THE ARMADA 1588
'We have time to finish this game and beat the Spaniards too' Infuriated by English support for the revolt in the Netherlands and Sir Francis Drake's 'beardsingeing' operation at the harbour of Cadiz, Philip II built a huge armada to embark upon his 'enterprise of England'. It would prove to be a humiliating disaster, ruined and defeated by a combination of superior English seamanship and appalling weather. 'The Armada 1588' is the fascinating story of one of maritime history's greatest battles. Atmospheric reconstructions and re-enactments, period imagery and computer graphics combine for a vivid depiction of this epic naval encounter. Also included is footage from aboard the 'Golden Hind' and at the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth, and analysis from a team of top experts including author John Tincey. Narrated by John Nolan
