Golden Hinde, London.
A tour of the London replica – Golden Hinde:
A full-size reconstruction of the ship Golden Hinde was built by traditional methods in Appledore, Devon and launched in 1973. Golden Hinde was the result of three years research and construction. Since then, she has travelled more than 140,000 miles (225,000 km). She sailed from Plymouth on her maiden voyage in late 1974, arriving on 8 May 1975 in San Francisco. In 1979, she sailed to Japan to make the movie Shogun, after which she returned to the UK having completed a circumnavigation. Between 1981 and 1984, she was berthed in England and was established as an educational museum. In 1984–85, she sailed around the British Isles and then crossed the Atlantic to St Thomas in the Caribbean. In 1986, she passed through the Panama Canal to sail on to Vancouver, where she was the main attraction in the Marine Plaza at Expo86. In 1987, she began a tour of US coastal cities, spending two years on the Pacific coast. In late 1988, she passed back through the Panama Canal to continue port visits on the Gulf and east coasts of the USA. In 1992, she returned home to the UK and spent the next four years visiting ports in Europe. Since 1996, she has been berthed at St Mary Overie Dock, in Bankside, Southwark, London, where she is open to the public and hosts a range of educational programmes.
The Real Golden Hinde:
Golden Hind was an English galleon best known for her privateering circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580, captained by Sir Francis Drake. She was originally known as Pelican, but was renamed by Drake mid-voyage in 1578, in honour of his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose crest was a golden 'hind' (a female red deer). Hatton was one of the principal sponsors of Drake's world voyage.
History:
Queen Elizabeth I partly sponsored Sir Francis Drake as the leader of an expedition intended to pass around South America through the Strait of Magellan and to explore the coast that lay beyond. The queen's support was advantageous; Drake had official approval to benefit himself and the queen, as well as to cause the maximum damage to the Spaniards. This eventually culminated in the Anglo–Spanish War. Before setting sail, Drake met the queen face-to-face for the first time and she said to him, We would gladly be revenged on the King of Spain for divers injuries that we have received.
The explicit object was to find out places meet to have traffic. Drake, however, acted as a privateer, with unofficial support from Queen Elizabeth. She is described as a mid-16th-century warship during the transition from the carrack to the galleon, and displaced about 100 tons.He first named his flagship Pelican, but renamed her Golden Hind on 20 August 1578 to honour his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose family crest was a golden hind. He set sail in December 1577 with five small ships, manned by 164 men, and reached the Brazilian coast in early 1578.
On 1 March 1579, now in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Ecuador, Golden Hind challenged and captured the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. This galleon had the largest treasure captured to that date: over 360,000 pesos (equivalent to around £480m in 2017).The treasure took six days to transship and included 26 tons of silver, half a ton of gold, porcelain, jewellery, coins, and jewels. After Drake's circumnavigation, Golden Hind was maintained for public exhibition at the dockyard at Deptford, London. The ship remained there from 1580 to around 1650, 45 years after Queen Elizabeth had died, before the ship eventually rotted away and was broken up. In 1668, the keeper of the stores at Deptford, John Davies of Camberwell, had the best remaining timber of Golden Hind made into a chair which was presented to the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford, where it remains.A table, known as the cupboard, in the Middle Temple Hall, London is also reputed to have been made from the wood of Golden Hind. Upon the cupboard is placed the roll of members of Middle Temple, which new members sign when they are called to the Bar. The ship's lantern was hung in the vestibule of Middle Temple Hall, but was destroyed during the Second World War.

The light is a bit contrasty, and I haven't found a satisfactory way around that as yet, apart from to film on a cloudy day, which isn't so great... but I'm working on it!
I have a Nikon D3300 with an 18-200 zoom lens (on 18mm), and an AFI VS-3SD stabilizer - the cheapest I could find that looked like it could do the job. It does, but is a bit of a handful.
ABOUT ALPHATUCANA
This channel is about 'waking up' from our matrix-induced slumber, and about leaving the World a better place than we found it. For most of us, our powers and motivation are strictly limited. We are fundamentally alone in a vast and mysterious Universe, but In the struggle to survive, to 'succeed', or to just get by, we sometimes forget the bigger picture, and we sometimes forget to just relax for a while and remember what an amazing World this is. There is plenty to look at: science, Nature, society... And there are plenty of games to help us get away from it all... So on this channel, I vlog about science, Nature, enlightenment, current affairs and much else besides, I upload sightseeing videos showing London, England, or my holidays elsewhere, and I upload gameplay videos. So why not join in for a while and see what you think?
POSTING SCHEDULE
This depends in part on whether I have had time to record videos in between going to work and living the rest of my life! Usually it runs like this:
- Most weekends: a vlog or sightseeing video.
- Gameplay videos: pretty random - typically at midday on weekdays, but not all the time.
- If I have something extra to post it usually appears at some random time :) I may livestream occasionally too.

The Golden Hinde- the Ship Sir Francis Drake Sailed Around the World In- London, Thames River, July 2016
Sir Francis Drake (c.1540-1596) was a famous English sailor, explorer, pirate, and slave trader in Elizabethan England. He was the 2nd person to sail around the world (after Ferdinand Magellan) from 1577 to 1580. He was the 1st captain to complete the entire voyage- the Portuguese-Spanish sea captain Magellan (c.1480-1521) died before his ships completed the voyage.
The galleon ship that Drake used to sail around the world was the Golden Hinde (also spelled Golden Hind). This ship was originally called the Pelican, but Drake renamed it in 1578, in the middle of his voyage. The ship was renamed in honour of Drake's patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose crest was a golden hind, or female deer.
An exact replica of the Pelican/Golden Hind is permanently docked on the south bank of the Thames River in London, between the Southwark Bridge and the London Bridge. The ship is surprisingly small, especially considering the fact that it originally had a crew of more than 80 men.
Besides sailing around the world, Drake was known for his role as a naval commander and a pirate or privateer under Queen Elizabeth I. He helped to command the English ships that defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588, and he attacked many Spanish ships and settlements around the world. For example, he captured the Spanish town of Panama at one point, and captured several Spanish treasure ships during his career.
Drake was at the Rathlin Island Massacre in Ireland in 1575, where English colonists killed 600 Scots and Irish men, women, and children after they surrendered. He accompanied some of the earliest English slave trading expeditions to West Africa with his relative Sir John Hawkins. During his voyage around the world, he executed his co-commander Thomas Doughty in 1578. Many saw Doughty's execution as unjust.
Drake died from dysentery off the coast of Panama in 1595, after a failed attack on the Spanish Caribbean colony of Puerto Rico.

More about Sir Francis Drake and his historic voyage:
Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hind
I narrate a short chapter from my booklet Sir Francis Drake and the Golden Hind with the aim to educate even the most knowledgeable reader, from adjacent to the present-day reconstruction in London. The ship is located at St Mary Overie Dock across the River Thames from where Drake lived at the Herbery from late 1588: the site is beneath Canon Street train station. Drake's Golden Hind was moored at the Tower of London to disgorge some of the treasure from the world voyage. It was berthed at Deptford, aboard which, Queen Elizabeth had Drake knighted. The remains of the ship probably lie beneath open concrete at Convoys Wharf, Deptford.

Various shots of a replica of the Elizabethan ship, the Golden Hind, in the harbour. A man on board in costume trims his beard; a green parrot sits in a cage. Commentator tells us the ship was built for a television series.
Several shots of people boarding the ship and being shown items of interest by Elizabethan costumed guides. One of the men in costume climbs to the crows nest and takes in the view.
Note: on file are notes on the ship and the guides seen. The TV programme the ship was built for was 'Sir Francis Drake'.

A look around the Golden Hinde, Southwark, London.
It's a full size authentic replica of Drake's vessel and has retraced many of Drake's original journeys. This includes circumnavigating the world.
Inside the ship was quite dark so I'm surprised the video came out as well as it did.
