Stunning Winter Drive in the Outer Hebrides; North Uist, Harris & Lewis [CC]
A gentle video taking you on a drive from North Uist to the Isle of Lewis via Berneray and the Isle of Harris. We are travelling in January 2019, and the snow on the North Harris Hills looks stunning.
To see a map of our outward route, please see:
To see a map of our return route, please see:
From North Uist we take the causeway over to the island of Berneray.
From Berneray ferry port we take the CalMac Ferry mv Loch Portain across to Leverburgh in the Isle of Harris. In Leverburgh we take the 'Bays Road', sometimes known as 'The Golden Road' up the east side of Harris.
After joining with the main A859 we continue past Tarbert, over the stunning North Harris Hills and past Loch Seaforth and on to the Isle of Lewis.
Returning, we head back down the West side of Harris on the A859, making photo stops at Seilebost beach and Horgabost Beach, before getting the ferry from Leverburgh back to Berneray.

Isle of Harris (Outer Hebrides) | Scottish Highlands & Islands Travelogue 2018 | S1E9
After an unplanned early start (see video!), we depart the Torvaig Campsite on Skye and drive across the island to the ferry terminal at Uig. From there we load the Land Rover Defender 110 onto the CalMac ferry for the two-hour journey to Tarbert on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides.
We spend the afternoon cruising around Harris taking in the amazingly unique landscape which ranges from unearthly, almost martian-looking, rockscapes, to golden beaches, to turquoise oceans, to pastoral vistas to peat bogs. The island features thousands of lochs, both freshwater and saltwater, and these pepper the landscape. Patches of blue sky punctured the blustery rain, and Harris is beautiful because of, rather than in spite of, the changeable weather.
For the evening, we then head to Lickisto Blackhouse Campsite where proprietor Greig was good enough to prepare a yurt for us, even though we were actually out of season! Highly recommended if you're on Harris - blackhouses are dry-stone walled structures with thatched roofs and there are several well-maintained communal blackhouse buildings at the site with shower, bathroom, cooking and a stone hearth in the main blackhouse.

The beautiful Isle of Harris - Outer Hebrides - Scotland
A video of me just panning around whilst on a visit to the stunning Isle of Harris a few weeks ago. Harris is connected to the Isle of Lewis an forms part of a chain of Islands off the West Coast of Scotland known as the Outer Hebrides. If you're watching this video and you've never been to Scotland before, maybe you're considering it, go for it. I'm from England but I've been to Scotland many times and happily hold my hands up and say that the Highlands & Islands and all up the West Coast of Scotland is truly epic to say the least and certainly my favourite area of the United Kingdom.
Outer Hebrides - Wildlife Highlights
Some of the highlights we were lucky to see on our recent trips to the Outer Hebrides in 2011.
Dawn ferry from Skye arrives in the Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides, Scotland
The ferry from Uig, Isle of Skye, arrives in Tarbert, Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides, at just before 7.30am. The wind is absolutely still and the sea is so calm that it runs like mercury from either side of the ship's wash. The dark silhouettes of the hills are beginning to show their form. A couple of hours later, as the sun lifts the last of the shadows from land and sea, the ferry sets out for the trip back to Skye.
Hebridean Adventure - Part 5 - Bealach na Ba, the road to Applecross
Travelling around the Outer Hebrides in a converted Land Rover Defender 110. In this video we leave Lewis via Traigh Mhor and get the ferry from Stornoway back to mainland, heading down the west coast through Torridon towards Apple Cross. Living and sleeping in the back of the vehicle we also visited the following places across the Uists and Harris & Lewis: Loch Boisdale, Eriskay, Howmore, Dalabrog, North Uist, Benbecula, Berneray, Rodel, Northton, Tarbert, Huisinis, Callanish, Carloway, Losgaintir, Siabost.

Isle Of Harris | Best Beach In Scotland
During our visit to the Isle of Lewis, we took a day trip down to the Isle of Harris (Na Hearadh).
You may know Harris for its tweed but Tarbert is home to the Harris Gin distillery which we visited. It was such a nice place complete with a gift shop and cafe.
We also took a drive to what is, in our opinions, one of the best beaches in Scotland, on the West Coast of Harris, Luskentyre beach.
Luskentyre is one of those must-visit beaches that everyone should see during their lifetime.
The one you see doing the rounds on Facebook because people can't believe (or want to brag) that it's in Scotland.
Golden sands, with crystal clear waters but with the dramatic Scottish landscape in the background. It really is a sight to see when visiting the Outer Hebrides.
Harris and Lewis are completely contrasting lslands with Lewis being quite flat and Harris being much more rugged.
We hope you enjoy this as we are away to Croatia at the weekend, so will be filming the entire trip for you all to enjoy.
PS: Enjoy the screaming lamb.

Scarp, Isle of Harris, Scotland
Scarp is an uninhabited island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, West of Hushinish on Harris.
Once an inhabited island nobody has lived here permanently since 1971 but every croft is still owned by the descendants of the original inhabitants and still keep sheep there.

Luskentyre Beach Isle of Harris Outer Hebrides Scotland
Tour Scotland video of Luskentyre Beach, Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The name Luskentyre derives from Lios-cinn-tir, meaning, headland fort, although there is no trace or local knowledge of a fort at the headland. However, the headland contains the site of an old part of Luskentyre Cemetery. Luskentyre Beach has been voted Britain's best beach. Luskentyre is accessible from the A859, via a minor road. Wildlife in the area includes the common scoter, the velvet scoter, the Eider duck, the wigeon, the long-tailed duck, the red-breasted merganser, the great northern diver and the Slavonian grebe.

Luskentyre Hills - Isle of Harris, Scotland.
Over the years I've walked up most of Britain's highest hills and mountains, not particularly high peaks but few walks can compete with the outstanding scenery taken in from the summits of Mullach Buidhe, Beinn Losgaintir and Beinn Dhubh. Outstanding views to the North Harris Hills, St Kilda, Taransay, Isle of Skye and across to North Uist.
Scotland: The Isles of Skye, Lewis and Harris
Scotland is incredible. This video quickly races through 5 days worth of footage shot on the Isle of Skye, and the Isle of Lewis and Harris.
While places like Glen Coe are incredible, the more rural and less often visited parts of Scotland are equally impressive. The country is always a wealth of wonderful surprises which as you can see range from rich fresh caught seafood to the hand crafting of Harris tweed, stunning sunsets and even golden sand beaches.
Most of the footage comes from a trip done with Wild in Scotland. I blog about the experiences on where you can also see my photos from the trip.
This video was shot on a Canon T3i/600D using a 18-135 and 55-250mm lens.
