Madikeri was formerly known as Muddu raja keri.Muddurajakeri which means Mudduraja's town, was named after the prominent Haleri king Mudduraja who ruled Kodagu from 1633 to 1687. The town was also known as Mercara during the British rule in India.
By road
Madikeri lies on the National Highway 275 that runs from Mangaluru to Bengaluru, via Mysuru within Karnataka. It is 120 km from Mysuru and 136 km from Mangaluru. From Bengaluru, the state capital of Karnataka, one can take the State Highway 17 (Bengaluru - Mysuru Highway) and take a deviation just after the town of Srirangapatna to join National Highway 275 towards Madikeri. It can be approached from Mangaluru via Puttur, Sullia passing through Sampaje Ghat. From Bengaluru, Madikeri is at a distance of 252 km. Nearby towns are Hassan (103 km), Sullia at a distance of 52 km in Karnataka state and Kasaragod, Kannur, Thalassery, Kanhangad and Uppala in Kerala state (each around 114 km away).
Omkareshwara Temple:
Omkareshwar is a Hindu temple dedicated to God Shiva. It is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. It is on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river; the shape of the island is said to be like the Hindu ॐ symbol.
Abbey Falls:
Abbey Falls (also spelled Abbi Falls and Abbe Falls) The river is part of the early reaches of the river Kaveri. Flow is much higher during the monsoon season.[2]
The waterfall is located between private coffee plantations with stocky coffee bushes and spice estates with trees entwined with pepper vines. A hanging bridge constructed just opposite the falls.
The falls was earlier called Jessi falls, named after a British officer's wife. However, the place was a thick jungle area back then. Years later, the waterfall was discovered by Mr. Neravanda B.Nanaiah who bought the place from the government and converted it into a coffee and spices plantation that surrounds the waterfall today.
It is located 8 km from the Madikeri, 122 km from Mysore, 144 km from Mangalore and 268 km from Bangalore.
Talakaveri:
Talakaveri is the place that is generally considered to be the source of the river Kaveri. It is located on Brahmagiri hills near Bhagamandala in Coorg district, Karnataka. It stands at a height of 1,276 m. above sea level. However, there is not a permanent visible flow from this place to the main rivercourse except during the Monsoon. Talakaveri is about 8 km away from Bhagamandala, 36 km from Panathur (Kerala) and 48 km from Madikeri.
History of the temple priests of Talakaveri:
It is believed that Mayura Varma, and Narasimman the Kadamba King who ruled vast areas of southern and central India in the 4th Century A.D. brought Brahmins from Ahi Kshetra (or Ahichatra) and put them in-charge of various temples in Tulu Nadu. Ahi Kshetra is mentioned in the Mahabharata as lying north of the Ganges, and as being the capital of Northern Panchala. The Brahmins who first landed in Shivalli in Tulunadu and then spread across 31 villages came to be known as Shivalli Brahmins or Tulu Brahmins. It is from Shivalli and Tulu Brahmins, that the priests of Talakaveri temple have come from.
