The Salt House | Sharon Kelly Short Doc
Introduction to a new body of work (of the same name) that Artist (and my Mother) Sharon Kelly will be presenting in the Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast from the 9th of January - 22nd of February, 2020.
Details:
Sharon Kelly's Website:
In this exhibition subject matter, materials and process are closely linked. Kelly has drawn on memory and recollections that have triggered a series of responses exploring ideas around the nature of personal memory, space and childhood.
The title images offers multiple versions of a recalled out-of-bounds building housing piles of salt, situated at a railway track across the field from where the artist grew up in the West Country, England. Small square black & white photographs taken by the artist’s mother or father in the early 1960’s, became the catalyst for pondering the past. Salt House appears in one photograph, as an indistinct grey shape in the far background. The resonance of salt in the process of preservation is not lost on the artist.
Using the process of contouring a form revealing a ‘negative space’, what is invisible can be made visible. The form of the salt House suspended within an imaginary world. The large works are created in charcoal on translucent paper – a problematic surface to receive the charcoal since it easily slides off its surface and can slightly mute marks. Also challenging is the task of retaining the inner spaces void of marks or charcoal dust.

Belfast Co-op WKIT 100.3 FM - OUR TOWN BELFAST ADS 2016
Our Town Belfast organized a cooperative ad campaign with WKIT 100.3FM (rock station out of Bangor, ME owned by Stephen King). We have 8 weeks of ads airing with each week devoted to an individual Belfast business. The common thread among the campaigns is a call to action for listeners to discover - or rediscover - Belfast, and all its unique offerings in shopping, dining, nightlife, and events. Businesses can sign up to add a week of their ad to this campaign by contacting bre@ourtownbelfast.org. As a bonus, all participating advertisers will have the option to gift 5 gift certificates to WKIT for use in one of their daily contest giveaways for a week. We will do the contests after the commercials are done airing in order to extend the campaign even further.

Seán Hillen - Artist
“Life is far too short not to have a fizzy drink”.
Seán Hillen pops his cork.
We’re standing in his north Dublin home, the likes of which resembles Francis Bacon’s Queensberry Mews or the mechanic’s garage in Robert M.Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. But, after talking to Hillen, one gets the feeling that everything is in its right place.
It’s the second bottle of Brut this evening but the artist has some cause for celebration.
Hillen is best-known for his socio-political, photo montages of Irish landscapes featuring nostalgic and, at times, kitsch imagery juxtaposed with international landmarks. The titles of which have comical inscriptions such as: Sr. Faustina Appears In London Newry, Miraculously Preventing The Illegal Photography Of Members Of The Security Forces.
Taking another sip of the fizz the artist announces a recent personal epiphany.
“My world changed a year ago when I got a diagnosis. I have a condition called Aspergers Syndrome. I’m not sure if it effected my work directly, it probably made me happier in my own skin. But I decided, there and then, that I’m not going to give a fuck about what people think of my work.”
Seán Hillen was born in Newry, Co. Down in 1961. He studied at the Belfast College of Art and in 1982 travelled to London to further his artistic education at the London College of Printing and then at the Slade School of fine art. During the 1980’s his travels between London and his home led to him producing a body of photographic work which he later developed into photo -montage pieces that included the series’ Ideas for a New Town, Newry Gagarin and LondonNewry, A Mythical Town.
Presently, Hillen is busy preparing a new book which he says will be a definitive collection of a hundred works with a biography written by journalist Mic Moroney. The, as yet, untitled book will be designed by Eric Kessels under the working title: The Wonderful World Of Sean Hillen. The entire catalogue of work included in the upcoming book will be displayed in The Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast in January 2017.
“The thing that is very noticeable in my work is this desire and need to fix the world. This idea that there’s something wrong with the world and that I’m obliged to fix it by cutting up bits of paper and sticking them together.”
Seán has two other exhibitions based on Melancholy Witness which opened recently at the Westport Arts Festival and Newry.

Zierle & Carter - 'Waiting for your promise' for DUO DAYS, Catalyst Arts, Belfast
Performed by Zierle & Carter at Catalyst Arts Gallery, Belfast for the 2013 Arts Council Northern Ireland funded DUO DAYS performance art event, 'Waiting for your promise' fundamentally explores relationship dynamics. Bound tight together, blinded to each other by the material that confines them, this process based material led performance unfolds, slowly unraveling its layers. The work brings to the surface issues surrounding co-dependency, limited projections of the other, tension, conflict, balance, and the 45min durational gradual act of burning the attachments free, to reconcile by bringing both glowing singed ends together to cinder, smoke and be transformed. Video filmed and edited by Emmanuelle Negre. This event was organised by BBeyond and curated by Hugh O'Donnell and Anne Quail.
